Description
E. F. DE WITT.
Sash-Lock.
No. 223,624. Patented Jan. 13, 1880* UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMIL r. DE WITT, or LANSINGBURG, NEW YORK.
SASH-LOCK.
SPEOIFICATEON forming part of Letters Patent No. 223,624, dated January 13, 1880.
Application filed November 21, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EMIL F. DE WI'rT, of Lansingburg, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inSash-Locks; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of myinvention, showing itclosed; and Fig. 2, a perspective view of the same, showing it open.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple. inexpensive, and yet safe fastening for window-sashes; and it consists in the peculiar construction of a bar or rod, which will be both rotating and sliding, and formed at the ends with bolts extending in the same direction, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
To enable others skllled in the art to which my invention belongs to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction.
Arepresents the upper bar of the lower sash, and B the lower bar of the upper sash. O is a bar or rod, of suitable length, secured to the sash A by means of eyes a a. Near each end of the rod 0 it is bent at right angles, forming short arms, on the ends of which are the bolts 0, which extend in the same direction, parallel to the main rod or bar 0. The bolts 0 are formed with a slight taper, to draw the two sashes together and exclude the air.
To the sash B, in suitable places, I secure two metal plates, D D, provided with loops or keepers d d, which receive and hold the bolts The bar or rod G is provided with a knob or handle, a, by which it may be rotated and the bolts 0 G slid into the keepers d d.
To prevent the bolts from being forced back by a knife or other thin instrument'inserted between the upper and lower sashes, I secure to the sash A, opposite one end of the rod 0, a pivoted stop, E, which is turned against the end of the rod, when it is fastened, and is provided also witha small catch or projection, e, which prevents its being turned too far.
Having thus fully described my invention, what 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, with sashes A B, of the fastening O, constructed at each end with bolts 0 O, pointing in the same direction and parallel with the fastener, the whole being arranged to slide and rotate, substantially as and for the purpose herein-set forth.
2. A Window-sash fastener consisting of a rotating and sliding rod, O, confined in eyes a, a, and constructed or formed with double bolts 0 C, said bolts being of wedge or tapering form, for the purpose of drawing the sashes into close contact with each other, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of thetwo window-sashes A B with rod 0, constructed as described, eyes a a, loops or keepers d d, and stop E, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EMIL FRIEDERIOH DE WITT.
