IMPROVEMENT IN OSCILLATING CHAIRS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 216,753, dated June 24, 1879 application filed March 17, 1879.

To all whom it may concern:

Beitknown that I, ALBERT H. ORDWAY, of Groveland, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rocking-Chairs and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in oscillating chairs; and it consists of a base or supporting frame projecting upward on two opposite sides of the chair, to the upper ends of which frames are secured downward-projecting flexible connecting -links, the lower ends of which are secured to the downward-projecting ends of the chair-frame, as will hereinafter be more fully shown and described.

The connecting-links aforesaid maybe made of wood, metal, woven wire, or fibrous or textile material without departing from the spirit of my invention.

The object of this invention is to produce a rocking-chair in which the weight of the person occupyingit is transferred as a pulling strain to the connecting-links in the linear extension of the latter, by which arrangement a very simple, durable, and comfortable rocking-chair is produced, and one in which the stiffness of the connecting-links is increased in a ratio as the weight is increased on the chair. This is a great advantage over ordinary chairs, in which the rocking-springs generally grow weaker as the weight upon the chair increases.

Stops may be made either on the supporting-frames or base, or on the downward-projectin g chair-frames, so as to prevent the chairseat from rocking too far in either direction. This improvement is equally well adapted for cradles and chairs.

On the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective View of my improved rocking-chair. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation, and Fig. 3 represents acentral longitudinal section.

f f represent the flexible connecting-links, that are each'secured in their upper ends to the upper end, a, of the frames at a, and in their lower ends to the lower end, 0, of the downward-projecting chair-frame e, as shown, and for the purpose'set forth.

b and b serve as stops on the frames at a, against which the frames 0 6 come in contact when the chair is rocked to its limit in either direction but such stops may be either wholly dispensed with or their location transferred or otherwise changed without departing from the essence of my invention.

Having thus fully described the nature, construction, and operation "of my invention, I wish to. secure by Letters Patent, and claim- 1. The herein-described rocking-chair, consisting of the base or supporting-frames a a, downward projecting chair-frames e e, and the flexible connecting-links f f, as and for the purpose set forth. I
