Description

HANDBAG Filed June 5, 1937 /5 4 l /JJ /7 Patented Sept. 27, 1938 UNITED lSTATI-:S
PATENT OFFICE l 4Y Claims.
This invention relates to devices such as hand-` bags and has particular reference to removable or reversible covers therefor.
One object of the invention is to furnish a device of the character described having improved flap means associated with an underly-` ing removable cover to serve the combined purpose of holding the ends of the flaps so as to tend to prevent unsightly separation of the flaps and/or cover from the bag body, and to permit the latter to be used as a complete `handbag without the cover but the flaps serving as a neat decorative feature that is securely held in place.
Another object of the inventionA is to provide an improved removable handle mounted in coordination with the cover overlying flaps or the ends thereof.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the type mentioned having few and simple parts, and which is neat and compact,
especially in conjunction with open ended removable covers, and the device being durable, reliable and ecient to a high degree in use.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent as the specification proceeds.
With the aforesaid objects in view, the invention consists in the novel combinations and arrrangements of parts hereinafter described in their preferred embodiments, pointed out in the subjoined claims, .and illustrated in the annexed drawing, wherein like parts are designated by the same reference characters throughout the several views.
In the drawing: Y
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation showing a device embodying the invention; the same may also be regarded as a view of a foundation bag with the cover removed.
Fig. 2 is a View in end elevation of the device.
Fig. 3 is a view in side elevation of the device with a flap upraised to show the construction.
Fig. 4 is a view in end elevation in open position thereof, with the flaps detached at their ends, and with one ap upraised, and one handle removed.
Fig. 5 is a horizontal fragmentary sectional view taken generally on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1, and showing the handles connected at one end and removed at the opposite end to disclose the alternative arrangements.
The advantages of the invention as here outlined are best realized when all of its features and instrumentalities are combined in one and the same structure, but, useful devices may be produced embodying less thanl the whole.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the artl to which the invention appertains, that the same may be incorporated in several different con- 5 structions. The accompanying drawing, therefore, is submitted merely as showing the preferred exemplication of the invention.
Referring in detail to the drawing, I0 denotes a device embodying the invention. The same 10 may include a foundation bag body II having side walls I2 and interconnecting inwardly folded recess forming gussets I3. 'I'he bag body may have a top opening or mouth as at I4, that may be closed in any suitable manner as by ai slide 15J fastener (not shown).
Connected to the side walls I2 as at the edges ofthe mouth I4 are a plurality of relatively narrow flaps I5 that extend longitudinally of.
the mouth I4 or bag body. These flaps I5 pos- 2.0:
sess end projections I6 whichrextend in the longitudinal direction of the flaps and beyond the adjacent ends of the bag body so as to Ybe foldable around the ends of the bag body adjacent to the mouth thereof and internally of ther 25.
gusset formed recesses. Detachable fastener means may be provided to connect the projections I 6 to the respective adjacent sides of the gussets; for instance, one fastener element I I may be on a projection I6 and the companion fas- 30 tener element I8 may be on one side of the gusset.
A pair of handles I9 may have their ends perforated as at 20 so as to removably engage around the fastener elements I1, I8, and the latter may be engageable through said perfora- 35 tion 20. Thus the handles connect with the gussets.
A removable cover 2I may consist of a strip element of different appearance on its opposite faces for reversibility. 'I'he cover may be folded 40 under the bottom of the bag body II and extend upward along the side walls I 2, with its end portions terminating adjacent to the bag mouth. The cover may extend the full width of the bag body but may be wholly open at the ends of the 45 bag body.
The end portions of the cover may be disposed under the flaps I5 and may be secured between the latter and the bag body. Preferably the end portions of the cover are formed with eyelets 22 50 or the like for removable reversible engagement with the studs 23 that are xed on the side walls I2 of the bag body.
In use, the fasteners I'I, I 8 may be disengaged to thus release the projections or tabs I6 and 55 permit the aps I to be upraised for easy removal of the cover 2| by disengagement of the fasteners 22, 23. The cover may now be reversed or discarded, and in either case, the flaps I5 may be downwardly folded to form a neat decorative cuff for the handbag or to conceal the end portions of the cover and the fasteners 22, 23. The tabs I6 may now be externally folded into the gusset recesses and secured at I'I, I8. Handles I9 may be used regardless whetherthe cover is employedV or not. In Fig. 5, at the left the handles are shown secured at the fasteners I1,V I8; at the right, the handles have been eliminated. Any suitable fastener means, such as long headed studs may be used for this purpose. Thus the handbag style can be readily varied to suit, and the handle connections are concealed.
In covers of the open ended typeherein disf closed, there is always present the tendency for the covers to creep or bulge away from the bag body. This result is avoided by the tabs I6 which hold the .cover snugly against the bag body at the ends of the cover, and tend to finish oif the appearance of the handbag. The invention may be regarded as comprising the end tabs I6 as connected to the bag body II at the ends thereof, andas being thus interengaged, and the cover may be regarded as being interengaged around the 4ends of thebag body adjacent to the mouth thereof. j
I claim: Y
1. vA handbag including a foundation bag having side walls and recess forming end gussets interconnecting the same, a removable cover folded around the bottom of the bag and extending upward along the side walls .thereof substantially to the mouth of the bag, means removably engaging the cover with the foundation Ybag adjacent to said mouth, flaps connected to the foundation bag adjacent to the said mouth and extending downward suiiciently to freely overlie and conceal the adjacent end portions of the cover in otherwise separate relation to the latter, said apshaving end portions extending beyond the endsof the foundation bag and being externally folded into the recesses of the gussets, and means connecting said end portions ofthe flaps with the gussetsto thus prevent the aps from swinging away from the foundation bag.
over the adjacentedge portions of the cover, Y
means releasably securing the edge portions of the cover to the side walls, the cover being free of the aps, the latter having continuous integral longitudinally directed end projections adapted to extend beyond the ends of the bag body and being infolded into said recesses, and means releasably connecting said projections to the respective adjacent folds of the gussets,
3. A handbag including a foundation bag having a mouth at. the top, side walls and inwardly folded recess forming end gussets, a removable cover for the bag body having ends adjacent to the said mouth and being open at the ends of the bag body, the latter having downwardly folded longitudinal aps overlying the end portions of the cover, and means for releasably engaging the end portions of the aps with the gussets in the recesses thereof, and supporting handles for the handbag removably connected to said means with the end portions of the aps overlying the connections for the handles.
4. A handbag including a foundation bag having a mouth at the top, side walls and inwardly foldedrecess forming end gussets, a removable cover for the-bag body having ends adjacent to the said mouth and being open at the ends of the bag body, the latter Vhaving downwardly folded longitudinal aps overlying the end portions of the cover, and means for releasably engaging the end portions of the flaps with the gussets in the recesses thereof, and handles for the bag body, said handles having perforated end portions, and'theplast mentioned connecting means engaging through said perforations to releasably secure the handles.
