5 Claims.

This invention relates generally to apparelgarments and, more particularly, to a certain new and useful improvement in apparel-garments of the type commonly known as jackets, and the like.

Our invention has for its primary object the provision, as a new article of manufacture, of a garment comprising a jacket or the like and a combined shirt and collar member so constructed for connection to fit as a unitary whole upon the body of the wearer and when closed upon the wearer giving the effect and appearance normally presented by a separate jacket and shirt.

Our invention has for a further object the provision of an apparel-garment of the type stated which may be easily and economically manufactured, which may be readily put on and taken off the body of the wearer, and which, when upon the person, is comfortable and neat and attractive.

And with the above and other objects in view, our invention resides in the novel features of form, construction, arrangement, and combination of parts presently described and pointed out in the claims.

Figure 1 is a fragmentary front view of a combination-garment constructed in accordance with and embodying our present invention, the garment being shown in open or unbuttoned condition;

Figure 2 is substantially a similar view, the garment, however, being shown in closed or buttoned condition;

Figure 3 is a reduced plan view of the detachable collar and shirt-section of the garment;

Figures 4 and 5 are detail sectional views of the garment, taken, respectively, approximately along the lines l l and 55, Figure 1;

Figure 6 is a fragmental view of the reverse side of the garment; and

Figure '7 is an elevational. view of a slightly modified form of collar and shirt-section of our invention.

Referring now in more detail and by reference characters to the drawing, which illustrates a preferred embodiment of our invention, A designates an apparel-garment of jacket type, which includes a conventional form of body-covering or fitting member I having sleeves 2 of set-in, raglan, or other suitable style. The member i also comp-rises, as is usual, right and left frontportions 3, l, designed or patterned to overlap at their free margins, as at a, when the garment is in closed condition upon the body of the wearer, the portions 3, 4, being provided with a plurality of co -operable fastening elements, such as buttons 5','and complementary buttonholes 6, as best seen in Figures 1 and 2, for releasable engagement for securing the garment in such 5 condition on the wearer.

Preferably, the member I is of the collarless type, the portions 3, 4, at their upper inner margins b, I), being out upon the pattern of a V yoke or neck-line, which extends upwardly and arouately to the shoulder line of the garment and around the back thereof for encircling the neck of the wearer.

Disposed flatwise upon the inner face, and at its outer margin, as at 0, approximately registering with the margins b, b, of the garmentportions 3, 4, is a preferably continuous placketforming strip 1, which, preferably adjacent its said margin 0, is secured to the member I as by rows of thread-stitches 8, the strip 1 being free at its opposite or inner margin and being provided with a plurality of suitably spaced buttonholes 9 for purposes presently described and as best seen in Figures 4, 5, and 6, it being, of course, understood that the jacket proper A may be constructed of any suitable materials, cut to any desired patterns, and of any required sizes.

Forming part of the garment, is a combined collar and shirt-section B, which is constructed preferably of suitable shirting, such as chambray, broadcloth, madras, or the like, and is cut upon a pattern somewhat as shown in Figure 3, the member B comprising opposed or companion imitative shirt-front providing portions lEl, ll, integrally or otherwise suitably joined by a shoulder-fitting portion l2, the so connected portions ll], ll, l2, being shaped for co-operation with the jacket A at its marginal portions b, b.

At its one or lower margin (1, the member B is, for neatness of body-fitting, of a sinuous or com- 40 pound-curve contour, as best seen in Figure 3; at its opposite or upper margin, the member B is approximately straight and is suitably provided with a neckband I3 having an integral collar I4 of conventional turn-down pattern, as also best 45 seen in Figures 3 and 5.

The portion I is provided along its margin e with a plurality of spaced buttons l for closure engagement, in the manner of a conventional type of shirt, with buttonholes l6 co-op- 50 eratively disposed along the margin e of the opposite front portion H, and each of the portions l9, II, is provided at suitable locations along or adjacent their lower margins d with a plurality of suitable fastening elements, such as but- 55 tons l1, aligned for engagement with the buttonholes 9 of the placket-flap I, as best seen in Figures 4 and 5.

In use, the member B is disposed at its inner marginal portion at upon, and attached by means of the buttons I"! with, the placket-strip I, as best seen in Figures 1, 2, and 4. The combination-garment may then befitted on the body of the wearer as a unit, and conveniently secured in closed condition through engagement of the respective series of buttons I5 and 5, with the series of buttonholes I6 and 6, the collar l4 being buttoned or closed through engagement of a special button 15 with a correspondingly special buttonhole Hi. If desired, a necktie C may be inserted under the collar [4 and tied in the customary manner, as best seen in Figure 2.

If desired, the garment may also be adapted for use with detachable collars, in which event the member B is formed with a neckband l3 to which a detachable collar l4 may be attached in any conventional manner.

Thus, we provide a unique combination-garment, which is simple and economical in construction, and which presents, when upon a wearer, the appearance of a combined shirt and vest or coat. Further, the garment may be easily, readily, and conveniently put on and taken off and is quite attractive and comfortable.

It will be understood that changes and modifications in the form, construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts of the garment may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the nature and principle of our invention.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,-

1. As a new article of manufacture, a jacket having a neck opening, a strip fixed on the inner face of the jacket at and along the neck-line thereof, said flap being provided with a series of spaced buttonholes, a member comprising companion shirt-front portions and a neck-encircling band, and buttons on the outwardly presented face of said member engageable with the strip at said buttonholes in concealed position between the inner face of the jacket and the outer face of the strip for detachably securing the jacket and member operably together in the formation of a unitary body-fitting garment.

2. As a new article of manufacture, a jacket having a neck opening, a strip fixed at one margin on the inner face, and extending longitudinally at said margin in registration with the neck-line, of the jacket, said strip being provided with a longitudinally disposed series of spaced buttonholes and being free at its opposite inwardly presented margin, a member comprising companion shirt-front portions and a neck-encircling band, said member being adapted for flatwise marginally overlapping said strip, and buttons on the outwardly presented face of said marginal portion of said member engageable with the strip at said buttonholes in concealed position between the inner face of the jacket and the outer face of the strip for securing the jacket and member operably together in the formation of a unitary body-fitting garment.

As a new article of manufacture, a jacket having a neck opening and co-operable fastening-members on its opposed front-sections for securing the jacket on the body of the wearer, a strip fixed at one margin on the inner face, and extending longitudinally at said margin in registration with the neck-line, of the jacket, said strip being provided with a longitudinally disposed series of spaced buttonholes and being free at its opposite inwardly presented margin, a member comprising companion shirt-front portions and a neck-encircling band, said portions being adapted for connection at opposed margins and at their opposite margin for flatwise overlapping said strip, and buttons on the outwardly presented face of said member engageable with the strip at said buttonholes in concealed position between the inner face of the jacket and the outer face of the strip for detachably securing the jacket and member operably together in the formation of a unitary body-fitting garment.

4. As a new article of manufacture, a jacket having a neck opening, a strip fixed at its outer margin on the inner face, and extending longitudinally at said margin in registration with the neck-line, of the jacket, said strip being provided with a longitudinally disposed series of spaced buttonholes and being free at its inner margin in inwardly opening fiy formation, a member comprising companion shirt-front portions and a neck-encircling band, said portions being adapted for flatwise marginally overlapping said strip, and buttons on said marginal portion of said member engageable with the strip at said buttonholes for securing the jacket and member operably together in the formation of a body-fitting garment.

5. As a new article of manufacture, a jacket having a neck opening, a strip attached at its outer margin on the inner face, and extending longitudinally at said margin in registration with the neck-line, of the jacket by means of a stitch line relatively close to said outer margin, said strip being provided with a longitudinally disposed series of spaced buttonholes extending at right angles to the stitch line and being relatively contiguous thereto, said strip further being free at its inner margin in inwardly opening fly formation, a member comprising companion shirt-front portions and a neck-encircling band, said portions being adapted for flatwise marginally overlapping said strip, and buttons on said marginal portion of said member engageable with the strip at said buttonholes for securing the jacket and member operably together in the formation of a body-fitting garment.
