2 Claims. '(Cl. 22h-82) This invention relates in general to containers and more particularly to decorated containers for the packaging of candy. cakes and a variety of other products.
An important object of the invention is the provision of such a container which embodies in its cover construction a removable or interchangeable display insert which may take the form of a transparent member such as glass, Cellophane, etc., or a pictorial member suggestive of a holiday season such asChristmas or Easter or a pictorial reproduction of some famous man or woman or a work of art. Y.
Another important object of the invention is the provision of an -insert holding or supporting device of simple and inexpensive construc- I tion which securely holds the insert in place and A which permits of ready removal, for the purpose 'in connection with the accompanying drawing,
discloses a preferred embodiment thereof.
Referring to the drawing: Figure 1 isa perspective view of one form of I y container to'which the invention is applicable;
and
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical section of a containerV showing in detail the cover construction, the insert and the insert holding device.
To illustrate a preferred application of the present invention, Fig. 1shows a cylindrical body II of relatively short height and large diameter and having a bottom end I2`permanently secured thereto by a d ouble seam I3 or in any preferred manner. The body II has its top marginal edge bent inwardly to provide an inward hollow'bead or curl I6. A short distance downward from the curled top the body I I is bent outward to form an outward limiting bead I5 to provide a stop for a slip cover. The body II may be suitably decorated by lithographing or otherwise.
The container body II is closed by means of a composite slip cover I6 telescopically and fricwall portion 22 which termiuatesin an outwardly curled hollow bead 23. The rounded top 2| terminates at its inner portion in an innermost depending flange.
The insert I8 consists of a circular disc of slightly less diameter than the inside diameter of 5 the friction flange 22 and may take the form of a transparent member such as a glass panel, or a Cellophane panel when it is desired that the contents of the container be visible. The insert I8 may also take the form of a decorated or litholo graphed fibre disc or a sheet metal disc, which may illustrate a variety of decorative or ornamental objects, such as pictorial illustrations suggestive of the Christmas and Easter seasons, or a. colored reproduction of the likeness of some famous man or woman, or the ornamental reproduction of a piece of art, or a variety of other objects which appeal to the esthetic senses.
The insert holding device I9 comprises an annular member, preferably stamped out of sheet metal, and substantially L-shaped in cross section. The horizontal leg 24 of the L provides a supporting ledge or shoulder for the outer marginal part of the insert. The vertical leg 25 of the L provides a friction wall conforming to the cy- 25 lindrical shape of the inner wall of the flange 22 and is adapted to frictionally engage the inner surface of the flange 22 to hold the insert in place by friction.
It is conceivable that instead of having an open friction ring as described above for holding the insert in place, the horizontal shoulder 24 may be extended .until'it covers the whole inner surface of the insert. In other words,'an inverted, shallow, cup shaped member may be provided or substituted. This alternate construction is within the contemplation and scope of the present invention. This construction, while requiring more sheet metal, may be desirable where the chosen -bling the cover to the body the preferred procedure is as follows: The insert I 8 is pushed into the member I'I through the opening defined by the bead 23 until it engages the edge of the rounded top 2|. 'I'he L-shaped 'retaining ring or insert holding device is then positioned in like manner within the memberi'l until the ledge 24 of the device engages the insert IB and presses it against the top 2I. Thus assembled, the cover I6 is slipped or telescoped over the cover engaging area of the body Il with the bead 23 contact 55 ing the bead I5 and limiting further downward movement oi the cover. v
The member I1, like the body II, may be decorated, by lithographing or otherwise, in a variety of preferred colors or designs. Y
As best seen in Fig. 2, it will be noted that the innen extremity of ,the curved portion 2| of the cover serves to clamp the transparent or other panel insert I8 securely between this portion of the cover and the ledge portion 24 of the'annular ring member I9. This provides means other than the frictional `contact of the ring with the cover flange 22 for'securely holding the parts in assembled position.
It is thought that the invention and many of its. attendant advantages will be understood from the foregoing description, and it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the iorm,v construction and arrangement of the parts ably fitting within said wall, said insert member bearing decorative design material of a seasonal nature, and a retaining and supporting devicex for said insert member having an inwardlyextending portion and a depending outer iiange portion adapted for lfrictional engagement against and Within said outer wall of the cover, said inwardly extending portionof the supporting device cooperating With said innermost depending iiange of the cover to removably clamp said display insert member in position therebetween.
2. In a container for candy and the like, a
vcontainer body,A a friction cover for said container and comprising an outer depending body" engaging frictionwall and an upwardly and inwardly curved portion terminating in an inner' l most annular depending flange, a display insert disk member removably itting within said wall, y
said insert member bearing an ornamental design of a seasonal character, and a retaining 20' and supporting ring for said disk, said ring having an kinwardly extending ange and a depending outer ange, the latter ange being adapted for frictional engagement against and within said outer wall of the cover, said inwardly ex- 25 tending ilange ofsaid ring cooperating ,with said annular depending flange of thecover to removably clamp said display insert member in position therebetween against displacement.
. FELIX EBERHART.
