Description

'0. M. TOWNSEND. Corn-Hu'sking Gloves.
Patented May 21,1878
Mgr/MM INVBNTOR ATTORNEYS.
NJ'ETEHS. FHOTO-LITNOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON. D C
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CYRUS M. TOWNSEND, OF STANDING ROCK, DAKOTA TERRITORY.
IMPROVEMENT IN CORN- HUSKING GLOVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 203,959, dated May 21, 1878; application filed April 18,1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GYRUs M. TOWNSEND, of Standing Rock, in the county of Boreman, in Dakota Territory, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Husking-Gloves, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to provide an economical device for protecting those surfaces of leather gloves, such as are used in husking corn or in any other kind of work, which are most exposed to wear, thereby ren dering such gloves more durable than they would be without such protection, and effectin g a saving of expense.
The invention consists in a working-glove provided on the wearing-surfaces with a protective coating of rubber and sand, and in a glove-protector consisting of a suitable fabric coated with rubber and sand, as will be hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawing, which represents a plan view of a husking-glove made according to my present invention.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is an ordinary leather glove, such as is used for protecting the hands when husking corn or doing some other kind of work. In order to protect the surfaces most exposed to wear, such as the surfaces of the fingers and the ball of the thumb, I out suitable strips, B, of cotton cloth and coat them with rubber, applying two coats, the second being thinner than the first, and then glaze the second coat with a layer of sand, b. These strips are sewed in their proper places on the glove; or, if desired, the glove may be coated directly with the rubber and sand without using the cotton cloth, as shown at B.
The rubber and sand used on the inside of the glove keep it dry and preserve the leather. The sand I) on the ends of the fingers comes in contact with the husks of corn, and cuts them, at the same time protecting the rubber, which is soft, pliant, and durable.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A working-glove, A, provided on the wearing-surfaces with a protective coating of rubber and sand, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A glove-protector consisting'of a suitable fabric, B, coated with rubber and sand, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
