TOILET CASE .7 Filed July 9, 1954 2 sheets-sheet 2 ,INVENTORS NORMAN TE JAMES 1) OIL-THOMPSON ATTORNEYS Patented Mar. 24 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE TOILET CASE Norman White and James Benton-Thompson, London, England; said White assignor to said Benton-Thompson 6 Claims.
Boxes or cases for holding toilet powder and for carrying in a hang bag or pocket and known as powder compacts are W611 known, such boxes or casescomprising a'comparatively shallow box 5 for receiving the toilet powder and a comparatively shallow lid hinged to the box, the lid being provided withan internal mirror, fastening means being provided for holding the lid and box in a closed condition, and the object of this'invention is to construct such class of box' or case whereby various different toilet preparations can be carried in the same box or case, and can be easily rendered accessible for use when required.
According tothis invention, the compact comprises a comparatively shallow box and lid hingedly' connected together, the box being providedwith a central powder or other compartment, and surrounding this central compartment ,isaplurality of shallow receptacles and a closure member or members over the receptacles, either the receptacles or closure member or members being engaged in the box so as to be circularly movabletherein, whereby on a circular movement of the'receptacles or the closure member or mem- "bers, access can be obtained to any of the receptacles when required, and whereby the surrounding receptacles can be covered when not required. 7
According to a further subsidiary feature of the inventionthe lid of the box or case may be provided with clips or other meansfor engaging and holding toilet appliancesand/or a mirror.
The invention will be cl earlyunderstood from the renewing description aided by the examples shown on the accompanying drawings in which:--
Figure 1 is a sectional side view of a box (partly open) constructed according to one example of carrying the invention into eiTect.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the bottom portion of the box with the top portion removed.
Figure 3 is a sectional detail view of a portion of the bottom of the box on an enlarged scale.
Figure 4 is a face view of the top portion of 45 the box.
Figure 5 is a part sectional side view of a modified construction of box.
Figure 6 is a part sectional side view of a box (partly open) constructed according to a further 50 example of carrying the invention into efiect.
Figure '7 is a side View of the box shown in Figure 6 but in the closed condition.
Figure 8 is a sectional detail view of a portion of the box shown in Figure 6 on an enlarged scale.
Figure 9 isa plan of part of the bottom of the box, also on an enlarged scale.
According to the examples shown in Figures 1 to 4 of the accompanying drawings, the box or case consists of two parts, i. e. a comparatively shallow box I, and a lid 2, hinged together at 3. Across the'bottom part I is a fixed plate 4 formed or provided with a compartment 5 in the center for powder, and which compartment is preferably provided with a hinged lid 6. Surrounding the compartment 5' and in the plate 4, is a ring of holes 'I, in which can be engaged other receptacles 8 for containing various toilet preparations. Above the fixed plate 4 and encircling the central compartment 5 is" a ring plate 9 having an aperture I'll which may be formed with a flange Illa around the opening I. The ring plate 9 may be mounted in any suitable way so as to beir'o't'atable over the fixed plate 4, such as by engaging'under the beaded edge Ia of the bottom portion I; or the center portion may be provided with a flange under which the inside edge of the ring plate engages.
The holes I and receptacles 8 are positioned in a circle around the'compartment at equal distances apart with the exception of one blank. space, so that by rotating the ring plate 9 the aperture II] can be brought over any of the receptacles 8 for access to its contents, or can be moved over the blank space so as to cover all of the receptacles 8.
The lid? of the box may be provided with a mirror I i and clips I2, I2, for receiving a small brush I3 and eyebrow pencil I4, or other appliances.
In the modified construction shown in Figure 5, the bottom of the compartment 5 is formed with an aperture 5a, communicating with the bottom of the box under the fixed plate 4 allowing a greater quantity of powder to be carried.
Instead of forming the ring plate 9 as a single ring with an aperture Ill, it could be formed as a number of segments with a gap between, so that the segments could be moved around the compartment 5 to uncover any one of the receptacles 8, or to close all of them.
In the examples shown in Figures 6 to 9, the top plate 9 is fixed and carries or is formed with the powder compartment 5 and aperture I0, whilst the under plate 4 is formed as a rotatable ring plate and carries the receptacles 8. For rotating the under plate 4 and receptacles 8, a recess or cut-away portion I5 or portions may be formed in the edge of the bottom portion I, so that the edge, which may be milled, of the ring-plate'4 can be engaged by the finger or thumb from outside the box to revolve the plate 4 to position one or the other of the receptacles 8 under the aperture ID.
The under plate 4 can be rotatably mounted in any suitable manner, such as by forming a recess lb in the bottom portion l of the box in which the plate 4 can be rotated.
The central compartment 5 may be formed in one with the plate 9 or 4 or may be constructed separately and held in place by pressing into a hole in the plate, or may be otherwise secured therein, and the lid 6 may be dispensed with in certain cases. The other receptacles 8 may also be formed with the supporting plate by stamping or pressing, but preferably the receptacles 8 are constructed separately and held in holes in the plates by pressure or otherwise, so that an empty receptacle can be removed and a refill inserted when required.
The shallow box or case may be of any shape,
'such as circular, square, oblong, oval or many sided, and where a non-circular box or case is employed, additional receptacles or holders for other preparations or appliances may be provided in the box or case in addition to the rotating disc and fixed receptacles or rotating receptacles and fixed disc.
The box or case may be constructed of any suitable material, and the rotating or fixed top discs may be of metal, or of glass, mica or other transparent material.
What we do claim as our invention and desire to obtain by Letters Patent is:-
