UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIOE.
HORACE H. sHEHWOOD, OF FREDERICKTOWN, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN FENCE-POSTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 202,594, dated April 16, 1878 application filed March 2, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatv 1, HORACE H. SHER- WOOD, of Fredericktown, in the county of Knox and State of Ohio, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Fence-Posts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The drawing is a perspective view of my fence-post.
My invention relates to wire fences; and it consists in the construction of a fence-post for the same, and an adjustable fastening for holding the wire to the post, as will be here.
inafter more fully set forth.
The annexed drawing, to which reference is made, fully illustrates my invention.
A represents a flat wrought-iron bar, of any suitable dimensions, which forms the post proper. Upon the lower end of this bar or post is cast solid the base B, which is made in double-spear shape, as shown.
Upon the bar or post A are placed links 0 0, made of malleable iron, and provided with hooks a on the front side to receive the fencewires. When the wires have been placed in these hooks, the links 0 G are adjusted to any desired points on the bar, and then fastened by means of wedges b b driven between their rear ends and the bars. This forms a safe, cheap, and convenient means for holding the fence-wires in position, and can be easily.
moved up and down, as occasion may require.
The post, as constructed, when sunk in the ground as far as the top of the base, will be perfectly firm and solid, without any liability of its tipping over to either side.
I am aware that a detachable double-spearshape base and a metallic clip, with key, are not new per so; therefore I lay no broad claim to such devices.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A metallic fence-post for wire fences, consisting of the single flat wrought-iron bar A, with the double-spear-shape base B cast solid thereon, as shown and set forth.
2. The improved metallic fence-post for wire fences, consisting of the flat wrought-iron bar A, double-spear-shape base B, formed in one piece, and the metallic clips 0, with keys I), adapted for use substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
HORACE H. SHERWOOD.
