IMPROVEMENT IN MEDICAL COMPOUNDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 202,141, dated April 9, 1878 application filed January 15, 1878.
To all whom it may concern Be it known thatI, MI'S.HENRIETTA BowIE, of Houma, in the parish of Terrebonne and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and Improved Medical Compound, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to provide an efficient remedy forpneumonia, colds, coughs, croup, asthma, and heart-disease.
The invention consists in the compound made by mixing together the following ingredients in the proportions and manner substantially as hereinafter fully described.
For a compound suitable for dilution, Itake the following proportions: of gum-arabic onehalf ounce, of hoarhound -herb one-fourth ounce, of St. J ohns wort herb one-fourth ounce, of water twenty-four ounces, making a strong decoction of the tea. Sugar is then added, and the mixture cooked to a density of 30 of Baumes hydrometer. While the decoctiou is yet hot, I add fifteen grains of powdered rhubarb and ten grains of powdered ipecacuanha, and let it'steep. When the solution is cold, I bottle it up and add one tea-spoonful of alcohol, whereafter the bottle is corked tightly and the cork sealed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A medical compound made by mixing together gum-arabic, hoarhound, St. J ohns wort, rhubarb, and ipecacuanha, with sugar and water, in the proportions and manner substantially as specified.
