Abstract
Axial fluid valves having annular flow control members are described herein. An example axial fluid valve described herein includes an axial flow valve body defining a passageway between an inlet and an outlet. The example axial fluid valve includes a sleeve slidably received by an inner surface of the axial flow valve body and movable along an axis substantially parallel to a longitudinal axis of the passageway. The example axial fluid valve includes a linkage or a gear operatively connected to the sleeve to move the sleeve to vary a flow of fluid between the inlet and the outlet through the sleeve.
Description
- The present disclosure relates generally to axial fluid valves and, more specifically, to axial fluid valves having annular flow control members.
- Fluid control valves (e.g., sliding stem valves, globe valves, rotary valves, butterfly valves, ball valves, etc.) are used in process control systems to control the flow of process fluids and typically include an actuator (e.g., rotary actuator, linear actuator, etc.) to automate operation of the valve. Some of these fluid control valves, although effective in many applications, involve tradeoffs. For example, butterfly valves may be used to control large flow volumes in an efficient manner, but are only capable of modest accuracy, and the seals therein are often limited in life cycle and temperature range. Globe valves, on the other hand, typically provide rigid trim and precise control, but often provide lower flow capacity for a given line size.
- In-line or axial fluid control valves are an alternative to the above-mentioned fluid control valves. One benefit of axial valves is that they incorporate globe valve style trim and, thus, the advantages offered thereby. Specifically, in axial valves, this trim may be oriented relative to the fluid flow path to increase efficiency and reduce energy losses due to noise and turbulence. The output shaft of an actuator is commonly connected to a flow control member (e.g., a plug) within a valve body of an axial valve via a rack-on-rack, rack-and-pinion or similar gear assembly. The actuator moves the flow control member within the valve body relative to a seat ring between an open position and a closed position to allow or prevent the flow of fluid through the valve.
- However, many known axial fluid valves still exhibit problems controlling fluid flow without substantial disturbances or energy loss due to turbulence. These known axial fluid valves often utilize actuators and transmissions within the fluid flow path which, as a result, create restrictions that increase turbulent flow through the axial fluid valve. Further, many of these axial fluid valves exhibit problems with actuation and sealing (e.g., gaskets, packing, seal rings). The actuators and transmissions within the fluid flow path require a large number of seals and gaskets to protect the internal gears and other actuation components from pressurized process fluid. For example, these known axial fluid valves having externally mounted actuators typically require use of a packing to seal against a valve stem that extends into the valve body. A packing can fail and result in leakage of process fluid. In other examples, some known axial valves use a complex gearbox to translate motion from an actuator to linear motion of a plug. Typically, the gearbox is in the fluid flow path and, thus, requires numerous seals to prevent process fluid from entering the gearbox. Operating axial fluid valves with such a large number of moving parts requiring numerous seals greatly increases the possibility of leakage of fluid outside the valve body and increases manufacturing and maintenance costs.
- An example apparatus includes an axial flow valve body defining a passageway between an inlet and an outlet. The example apparatus includes a sleeve slidably received by an inner surface of the valve body and movable along an axis substantially parallel to a longitudinal axis of the passageway. The example apparatus includes a linkage or a gear operatively connected to the sleeve to move the sleeve to vary a flow of fluid between the inlet and the outlet through the sleeve.
- In another example, an apparatus includes an axial flow valve body defining a passageway between an inlet and an outlet. An annular flow control member is slidably received by an inner surface of the valve body and movable along an axis substantially parallel to a longitudinal axis of the passageway, wherein a flow of fluid is to pass through the flow control member.
- In yet another example, an apparatus includes an axial flow valve body defining a passageway between an inlet and an outlet. A sleeve is slidably received by an inner surface of the valve body and movable along an axis substantially parallel to a longitudinal axis of the passageway. The example includes means for moving the sleeve axially within the passageway to vary a flow of fluid between the inlet and the outlet

In describing these examples, like or identical reference numbers are used to identify the same or similar elements. The figures are not necessarily to scale and certain features and certain views of the figures may be shown exaggerated in scale or in schematic for clarity and/or conciseness. Additionally, several examples have been described throughout this specification. Any features from any example may be included with, a replacement for, or otherwise combined with other features from other examples.
- The example axial fluid valves described herein reduce valve noise, provide an axially aligned fluid flow passageway to reduce turbulent flow and improve flow capacity, significantly eliminate in-flow actuating components, which require numerous seals and gaskets, and increase flow efficiency to enable the use of smaller pumps and piping. In general, the example axial fluid valves described herein use an annular flow control member (e.g., a sleeve) to vary a flow of fluid that passes through the annular flow control member and around a seal, which is disposed (e.g., centrally) within a passageway of an axial valve body.
- More specifically, in an example axial fluid valve described herein, a sleeve is slidably received by an inner surface of a valve body and moves (e.g., translates) along a fluid flow passageway. The sleeve may have a central axis that is coaxially aligned with a central axis of the passageway. The sleeve may be operatively coupled to an actuator (e.g., a linear actuator, a rotary actuator, etc.) to move the sleeve to control a flow of fluid between an inlet and an outlet of the axial fluid valve. The axial fluid valve may also include a seal centrally disposed within the passageway of the valve body and coupled to an inner surface of the valve body via a plurality of webs (e.g., support members). In operation, fluid flows into the sleeve at a first end, out of the sleeve at a second end and around the seal toward the outlet of axial fluid valve. The sleeve is to move, via the actuator, toward the seal so the second end of the sleeve engages the seal to prevent the flow of fluid through the sleeve and, thus, through the axial fluid valve. This axial fluid flow path greatly increases flow efficiency by reducing restrictions and, therefore, turbulent flow through the passageway of the valve.
- An example axial fluid valve described herein includes a linear actuator having a stem positioned substantially perpendicular to the flow of fluid through the axial fluid valve. The linear actuator stem is operatively coupled (e.g., connected) to the sleeve via a link (e.g., a linkage). The link is disposed within a cavity of the valve body and is coupled to an outer surface of the sleeve. In operation, the link converts linear motion of the actuator to linear motion of the sleeve within the passageway of the valve body. The example axial fluid valve enables the sleeve to slide axially within the valve body and reduces the number of components within the fluid flow path of the axial fluid valve.
- In another example axial fluid valve, the sleeve includes a plurality of teeth on an outer surface of the sleeve. A rotary actuator having a pinion (e.g., a gear) engages the teeth to move the sleeve axially within the valve body to control the flow of fluid through the sleeve and, thus, the passageway of the axial fluid valve.
- In the example axial fluid valves described herein, the fluid flow path is substantially linear, which allows the fluid to travel through the valve with less energy loss and noise than many known valves. Furthermore, the examples described herein enable a relatively large portion of the moving components of an axial fluid valve to be disposed outside the fluid flow path or stream, thereby significantly reducing the number of seals and gaskets required. The sleeve and actuators or actuating means described herein significantly reduce the number of moving parts required to operate an axial fluid valve. Therefore, the sleeve and actuating means greatly simplify the manufacturing and machining requirements and, thus, decrease the cost of manufacturing an axial fluid valve.

FIG. 1A illustrates a cross-sectional side view of an example axialfluid control valve 100 described herein. The axialfluid control valve 100 includes a firstvalve body portion 102, a secondvalve body portion 104, asleeve 106, alinear actuator 108, a link 110 (e.g., a linkage) and aseal 112. Thevalve body portions passageway 114 that provides a fluid flow path between aninlet 116 and anoutlet 118 when the axialfluid control valve 100 is installed in a fluid process system (e.g., a distribution piping system). In some examples, the firstvalve body portion 102 and the secondvalve body portion 104 may be integrally formed to define the axialfluid control valve 100 as a substantially unitary piece or structure. - The first
valve body portion 102 includes afirst flange 120 at theinlet 116 and asecond flange 122 removably coupled to athird flange 124 of the secondvalve body portion 104. Thesecond flange 122 of the firstvalve body portion 102 and thethird flange 124 of the secondvalve body portion 104 may be removably coupled with any suitable fastening mechanism(s). The secondvalve body portion 104 also includes afourth flange 126 at theoutlet 118. In operation, thefirst flange 120 of the firstvalve body portion 102 may be coupled to anupstream pipe 128 and thefourth flange 126 of the secondvalve body portion 104 may be coupled to adownstream pipe 130. - In the example shown in
FIG. 1A , the axialfluid control valve 100 is in a first position (e.g., open), and in the example shown inFIG. 1B , the axialfluid control valve 100 is in a second position (e.g., closed). The axialfluid control valve 100 is interposed in a fluid flow path between an upstream supply source via theupstream pipe 128 and a downstream supply source via thedownstream pipe 130. The process fluid may include any process fluid such as, for example, natural gas. In operation, thesleeve 106 operates between the first position to allow the flow of fluid between theinlet 116 and the outlet 118 (e.g., the open position) and the second position to prevent the flow of fluid between theinlet 116 and the outlet 118 (e.g., the closed position). - In the example axial
fluid control valve 100 shown inFIGS. 1A and 1B , thesleeve 106 has aninner surface 132, anouter surface 134, afirst end 136 and asecond end 138. Aninner surface 140 of the firstvalve body portion 102 slidably receives theouter surface 134 of thesleeve 106 near thefirst end 136 and aninner surface 142 of the secondvalve body portion 104 slidably receives theouter surface 134 of thesleeve 106 near thesecond end 138. Thesleeve 106 is substantially axially (e.g., coaxially) aligned with anaxis 144 of the axialfluid control valve 100 to define the fluid flow path through the firstvalve body portion 102, the secondvalve body portion 104 and thesleeve 106. - As shown in
FIGS. 1A and 1B , theseal 112 is centrally disposed within thepassageway 114 and substantially aligned along theaxis 144 of the axialfluid control valve 100. Theseal 112 includes aconical surface 146 and a sealingsurface 148. Theconical surface 146 provides a smooth flow path around theseal 112 to reduce turbulent fluid flow within theaxial fluid valve 100. The sealingsurface 148 is adapted to receive thesecond end 138 of thesleeve 106. Theseal 112 may be any sealing member (e.g., plug) designed to engage or receive thesecond end 138 of thesleeve 106 to prevent the flow of fluid through thesleeve 106 and, thus, through thepassageway 114. Theseal 112 is coupled to theinner surface 142 of the secondvalve body portion 104 by a plurality of support members 150 (e.g., webbing). Thesupport members 150 may be any structure used to support theseal 112 that are minimally restrictive to reduce obstruction in the fluid flow path and strong enough to support theseal 112 when receiving pressure from the process fluid and/or thesleeve 106. - In the example axial
fluid valve 100 shown inFIGS. 1A and 1B , thesleeve 106 is operatively connected to anactuator stem 152 via thelink 110. Theactuator 108 is positioned such that thelinear actuator stem 152 moves along anaxis 154 that is substantially perpendicular to theaxis 144 of theaxial fluid valve 100. Thelink 110 is pivotably coupled to theactuator stem 152 at first joint 156 and pivotably coupled to thesleeve 106 at asecond joint 158. Theouter surface 134 of thesleeve 106 further includes acollar 160 on which the joint 158 is located. In some examples, thecollar 160 may be integrally formed with thesleeve 106 as a substantially unitary piece or structure. Thelink 110 is disposed within acavity 162 formed between the firstvalve body portion 102 and the secondvalve body portion 104. Theactuator stem 152 moves through the firstvalve body portion 102 via abore 164, which is sealed by afirst stem seal 166 and asecond stem seal 168 that support and provide surfaces to enable theactuator stem 152 to slide. In other embodiments, thebore 164 may include more or fewer stem seals. - To move the
sleeve 106 within thepassageway 114 of thevalve body linear actuator 108 moves theactuator stem 152 into thecavity 162. In this case, theactuator stem 152 causes thelink 110 to translate and rotate counter-clockwise (in the orientation shown) to move thesleeve 106 along theaxis 144 toward theseal 112. The axialfluid control valve 100 further comprises boundary seals 170, which are disposed within a firstannular groove 172 in the firstvalve body portion 102 and a secondannular groove 174 within the secondvalve body portion 104, respectively. The boundary seals 170 provide a tight seal between theouter surface 134 of thesleeve 106 and theinner surfaces valve body portions cavity 162. - As shown in
FIGS. 1A and 1B , the example axialfluid valve 100 also includes aspring 176 disposed between the secondvalve body portion 104 and thecollar 160. Thespring 176 biases thesleeve 106 in one direction and, thus, minimizes lost motion between the moving components. In other examples, thespring 176 may be disposed between thecollar 160 and the firstvalve body portion 102, or between the firstvalve body portion 102 and theactuator stem 152. Thespring 176 may be located in any other location within theaxial fluid valve 100 to provide a biasing means to eliminate lost motion. - In operation, fluid is supplied to the
inlet 116 by theupstream supply 128 and flows into thesleeve 106 through thefirst end 136. In the open position, as shown in the example ofFIG. 1A , the fluid may flow out thesecond end 138 of thesleeve 106 and around theseal 112 toward theoutlet 118 to thedownstream supply 130. In the closed position, as shown in the example ofFIG. 1B , theactuator stem 152 translates downward to move thesecond end 138 of thesleeve 106 to engage the sealingsurface 148 of theseal 112 to prevent the flow of fluid through thesleeve 106 and, thus, between theinlet 116 and theoutlet 118 of theaxial fluid valve 100. However, in other examples, the flow may be reversed through theaxial fluid valve 100 and, thus, the fluid may pass over theseal 112 first and then pass through thesleeve 106 second. - In the example shown in
FIGS. 1A and 1B , the cross-section of thesleeve 106 is circular in shape. However, in other examples, the cross-section of thesleeve 106 may be square, rectangular, elliptical or any other shape corresponding (e.g., matching) to the shape of theinner surfaces valve body portions -
FIG. 2 illustrates a cross-sectional view of an axialfluid control valve 200 similar to the axialfluid control valve 100 ofFIGS. 1A and 1B but having an alternatively orientedlinear actuator 208. The axialfluid control valve 200 includes a firstvalve body portion 202, a secondvalve body portion 204, asleeve 206, thelinear actuator 208, alink 210 and aseal 212. Thesleeve 206 is substantially axially (e.g., coaxially) aligned with anaxis 214 of the axialfluid control valve 200 to define the fluid flow path through the firstvalve body portion 202, the secondvalve body portion 204 and thesleeve 206. - In the example axial
fluid valve 200 shown inFIG. 2 , thesleeve 206 is operatively connected to anactuator stem 216 via thelink 210. Thelinear actuator 208 is positioned such that theactuator stem 216 moves along anaxis 218 that is substantially parallel but offset (i.e., non-coaxial) to theaxis 214 of theaxial fluid valve 200. Thelink 210 is rigidly coupled to theactuator stem 216 and thesleeve 206. In other examples, theactuator stem 216 may be attached to the sleeve via any fastening mechanism known to those skilled in the art. Thelink 210 is disposed within acavity 220 formed between the firstvalve body portion 202 and the secondvalve body portion 204. Theactuator stem 216 moves through the firstvalve body portion 202 via abore 222, which is sealed by astem seal 224 that supports and provides a surface to enable theactuator stem 216 to slide. To move thesleeve 206 within apassageway 226 of thevalve body portions linear actuator 208 moves theactuator stem 216 into thecavity 220. In this case, thelink 210 transfers linear motion from theactuator stem 216 to move thesleeve 206 along theaxis 214 toward theseal 212 and, thus, prevent the flow of fluid through theaxial fluid valve 200. -
FIG. 3A illustrates a cross-sectional top view of an alternative example axialfluid control valve 300 described herein. The axialfluid control valve 300 includes a firstvalve body portion 302, a secondvalve body portion 304, asleeve 306, a first pinion 308 (e.g., a gear), a second pinion 310 (e.g., a gear) and aseal 312. The firstvalve body portion 302 and the secondvalve body portion 304 are coupled to define apassageway 314 that provides a fluid flow path between aninlet 316 and anoutlet 318 when the axialfluid control valve 300 is installed in a fluid process system. In operation, thesleeve 306 operates between a first position, shown inFIG. 3A , to allow a flow of fluid between theinlet 316 and the outlet 318 (e.g., an open position) and a second position, shown inFIG. 3B , to prevent the flow of fluid between theinlet 316 and the outlet 318 (e.g., a closed position). - In the example axial
fluid control valve 300 shown inFIGS. 3A and 3B , thesleeve 306 has aninner surface 320, anouter surface 322, afirst end 324 and asecond end 326. Aninner surface 328 of the firstvalve body portion 302 slidably receives theouter surface 322 of thesleeve 306. The firstvalve body portion 302, the secondvalve body portion 304 and thesleeve 306 form thepassageway 314 for the flow of fluid. Thesleeve 306 is substantially axially (e.g., coaxially) aligned along anaxis 330 of the axialfluid control valve 300. - In the example shown, the
outer surface 322 ofsleeve 306 further includes a firsttoothed portion 332 and a secondtoothed portion 334. Thefirst pinion 308 and thesecond pinion 310, which are coupled to a rotary actuator 336 (shown inFIG. 3C ), engage the first and secondtoothed portions sleeve 306 axially within theaxial fluid valve 300. In the example shown, thefirst pinion 308 is disposed with afirst cavity 338 formed within the firstvalve body portion 302, and thesecond pinion 310 is disposed within asecond cavity 340 formed within the firstvalve body portion 302. In other examples, a single rotary actuator and pinion may be used. - The
seal 312 is centrally disposed within thepassageway 314 and axially aligned with theaxis 330 of the axialfluid control valve 300. Theseal 312 includes aconical surface 342 and a sealingsurface 344. The sealingsurface 344 is adapted to receive thesecond end 326 of thesleeve 306. Thesecond end 326 of thesleeve 306 further includes a plurality of apertures 346 (e.g., openings, holes, windows, slots) to further allow fine control of the flow of fluid through theaxial fluid valve 300. As shown inFIG. 3B , as thesecond end 326 of thesleeve 306 engages theseal 312, theapertures 346 become smaller and, thus, allow less fluid to pass through thesleeve 306 and out thesecond end 326. Theapertures 346 allow a more controlled (e.g., throttled) flow of fluid through theaxial valve 300. Theseal 312 is coupled to aninner surface 348 of the secondvalve body portion 304 by a plurality of support members 350 (e.g., webs, ribs, etc.). Theaxial fluid valve 300 further comprises a plurality of boundary seals 352 disposed between theouter surface 322 of thesleeve 306 and theinner surface 328 of the firstvalve body portion 302. In other examples, theaxial fluid valve 300 may include more or fewer boundary seals 352 to prevent leakage of process fluid. -
FIG. 3C illustrates a cross-sectional side view of theaxial flow valve 300 without thesleeve 306. As seen in the example, therotary actuator 336 is operatively coupled to thefirst pinion 308 via afirst spindle 354. Thefirst spindle 354 engages anotch 356 within thefirst cavity 338 in the firstvalve body portion 302. In other examples, thespindle 354 may further include a bushing (e.g., bearing) to ensure smooth rotation of thepinion 308. - With reference to
FIGS. 3A-C , in operation, process fluid enters the firstvalve body portion 302 at theinlet 316 and flows into thesleeve 306 at thefirst end 324. In the open position, as shown in the example inFIG. 3A , the fluid may flow out of thesecond end 326 and around theseal 312 toward theoutlet 318. To reach the closed position, as shown in the example inFIG. 3B , thefirst pinion 308 rotates counter-clockwise and thesecond pinion 310 rotates clockwise to move thesleeve 306 toward theseal 312. As thesecond end 326 of thesleeve 306 engages the sealingsurface 328 of theseal 312, the process fluid is prevented from flowing through thesleeve 306 and, thus, between theinlet 316 and theoutlet 318 of theaxial fluid valve 300. In other examples, the sleeve may be slidably moved within the axial fluid valve by any device or mechanism, such as an electric actuator, a hydraulic actuator, a pneumatic actuator, a piezoelectric actuator, an electromechanical actuator and any combination thereof. - The example axial

On the contrary, this patent covers all methods, apparatus, and articles of manufacture fairly falling within the scope of the appended claims either literally or under the doctrine of equivalents.
Claims (20)
1. An apparatus comprising:
an axial flow valve body defining a passageway between an inlet and an outlet;
a sleeve slidably received by an inner surface of the valve body and movable along an axis substantially parallel to a longitudinal axis of the passageway; and
a linkage or a gear operatively connected to the sleeve to move the sleeve to vary a flow of fluid between the inlet and the outlet through the sleeve.
2. The apparatus as defined in claim 1 , further comprising an actuator coupled to the linkage or the gear, wherein the actuator is to move the sleeve via the linkage or the gear.
3. The apparatus as defined in claim 2 , wherein the actuator is a linear actuator and is positioned to move a stem of the actuator in a direction substantially perpendicular to an axis along which the sleeve is to move.
4. The apparatus as defined in claim 2 , wherein the actuator is a linear actuator and is positioned to move a stem of the actuator along an axis that is offset from and substantially parallel to an axis along which the sleeve is to move.
5. The apparatus as defined in claim 1 , further comprising a seal disposed within the passageway to engage an end of the sleeve.
6. The apparatus as defined in claim 5 , wherein the end of the sleeve comprises a plurality of apertures.
7. The apparatus as defined in claim 2 , wherein the sleeve comprises a plurality of teeth on an outside wall of the sleeve to engage the gear.
8. The apparatus as defined in claim 1 , further comprising a spring coupled between an outer wall of the sleeve and the valve body.
9. An apparatus comprising:
an axial flow valve body defining a passageway between an inlet and an outlet; and
an annular flow control member slidably received by an inner surface of the valve body and movable along an axis substantially parallel to a longitudinal axis of the passageway, wherein a flow of fluid is to pass through the flow control member.
10. The apparatus as defined in claim 9 , further comprising an actuator operatively connected to the flow control member to move the flow control member to vary the flow of fluid between the inlet and the outlet.
11. The apparatus as defined in claim 10 , further comprising a link pivotally attached to the actuator and to the flow control member.
12. The apparatus as defined in claim 11 , wherein the actuator is a linear actuator and is positioned to move a stem of the actuator in a direction substantially perpendicular to the axis along which the flow control member is to move.
13. The apparatus as defined in claim 10 , wherein the actuator is positioned along an axis that is offset from and substantially parallel to the axis along which the flow control member is to move.
14. The apparatus as defined in claim 9 , further comprising a seal disposed within the passageway to engage an end of the flow control member.
15. The apparatus as defined in claim 14 , wherein the seal is adjacent to the outlet.
16. The apparatus as defined in claim 9 , wherein an end of the flow control member comprises a plurality of axially aligned slots.
17. The apparatus as defined in claim 9 , further comprising a seal coupled between an outer surface of the flow control member and the valve body.
18. An apparatus comprising:
an axial flow valve body defining a passageway between an inlet and an outlet;
a sleeve slidably received by an inner surface of the valve body and movable along an axis substantially parallel to a longitudinal axis of the passageway;
means for moving the sleeve axially within the passageway to vary a flow of fluid between the inlet and the outlet.
19. The apparatus as defined in claim 18 , wherein the valve body comprises a unitary structure between the inlet and the outlet.
20. The apparatus as defined in claim 18 , wherein the passageway, the inlet, and the outlet are substantially aligned along the axis along which the sleeve is to move.
