Description

Nov. 13, 1934.
Original Filed May 14, 1928 M. S. CLARK STORAGE APPARATUS 3 Sheets-Sheet 5 Patented Nov. 1.3', 1934 UNITED STATES v.PATENT FICE James Clyde Crawford, Chambersburg, Pa. Application October 30, 1933, Serial No. 695,932
,3Claims.
V'I'he invention relates to a box construction andhas for its primary object to provide a structure of this kind wherein the same in its make-up furnishes a permanent seal and also a substantial temporary closure, the former serving, after the packing of the box, to maintain its contents intact until purchased by a user and the latter being employed by the purchaser until the contents of the box is exhausted,
Another object of the invention is the provision of a box construction, wherein under the permanent sealing thereof there will be no irregularity in the/external surface at the opening end of the box and ,in the use of the temporary closure it l5 will be ilrm and secure to avoid accidental discharge of the contents of'such box should it be carelessly handled.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a box construction of this character which is extremely simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in its purpose, novel in form, strong, durable, and inexpensive to manufacture, it being shipped economically on account of being of a flat type when not made up. With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses vthe preferred embodiment of the invention,
and vpointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a plan View of the blank from which the box is made.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the box permanently sealed. v
Figure 3 is a perspective View of the box when open.
Figure 4 is a perspective View of the box whe temporarily sealed or closed.V
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the box construction comprises a suitable blank of material A, preferably relatively stiff cardboard or paper sheets and of substantially rectangular form,v
having longitudinal and transverse weakened or crease lines 5 and 6, respectively, to provide a front '7, back 8, sides 9, bottom flaps 10, top flaps.
1l and 12, respectively, and tongues 13 andt14, respectively, at the bottom and top. The blank A is folded on the crease lines 5 and 6, the bottom ilaps 10 being foldable on one another and the tongues 13 at this end being bent .inwardly to be disposed inwardly of the overlapping of the flaps. 10, which latter are suitably sealed to each other.
The ap 11 has superimposed thereon the flap 12 when these flaps are folded inthe permanent 60 sealing of the box body, lthe tongue 14 being folded inwardly to lie beneath the overlapped iiaps 11 and 12. The ilap 11, which is the outermost flap inthe overlap, has a scored or weaken ed line 15 providing apull tab 16 to the said 65 flap 11 when the line 15 is broken to free the portions 17 of said flap 11, which portions are made fast to the flap 12 in the overlapping of said flaps l1 and 12 and thus prior to mutilating or breaking the line 15 the box body will be permanently 70 sealed. v
The tab 16 in its shape provides laterally directed bendable lips 18, these being engageable in slots 19 formed in the flap 12 when the flap 11y has been pulled upon to break the line 15 and 75 separate the portions 17 for the temporary closing of the box.
The tab, at the center thereof, is formed with a notch 20 opening through its free edge, which permits linger gripping of such tab 16 when the 80 front '7 of the box is slightly pressed inwardly next to the tab so as to enable the breaking of the line 15 to separate the tab and the portions 17 which remain fast to the flap 12 under the permanent sealing of the box.
In other Words, the ilap l1 at the outer corners thereof, namely, the portions 17, is made fast to the flap 12 so that the tab 16 and the remaining portion of the ilap l1 can be separated from the portions 1'7 by the breaking of the scored or weak- 90 ened line 15 in said flap 11 and thus freeing the permanent seal but permitting temporary sealing or closingl of the box by the engagement of the lips 18 in'the slots 19, the lips being on the tab 16 and the slots 19 in the flap 12. 'I'hus the 95 box in its make-up is susceptible of both permal nent sealing and temporary closing. In other words, the box constructed as heretofore de- -scribed furnishes not only a permanent seal in the original packaging of contents, but also a temporary closure usable by a person until the contents of the box is exhausted. The back 8 carries a flange 21 for the joining of the side 9 next thereto with said back.
The front 7, next to the weakened line 5 and 105 centrally with respect to said front, has provided therein a scored or weakened line 22 which confronts the notch 20 so that when the box is permanently sealed and it is desired to break lthis original seal it becomes only necessary to press in
