F. N. LEWIS MANICURE CHEST Filed Dec. 3, 1932 Patented Feb. 20, 1934 UNITED STATES MANICURE CHEST Florence N. Lewis, New York, N. Y.
Application December 3, 1932, Serial No. 645,627, and in France September 20, 1932 1 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in manicure kits, and more especially to a novel folding box designed to compactly house manicure implements and cosmetics, when closed, but which when in open position makes all of the instruments and cosmetics readily accessible for use by a manicurist.
An object of the invention is to provide a kit or chest of parallelepiped shape when folded, and including a substantially rigid body having an open top and one hinged end. The cover of the box is also hingedly connected to the hinged end and carries compartments adapted to fit alongside other compartments on the hinged end when the box is in folded or closed position.
With the foregoing object outlined and with other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel features hereinafter described in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawing,
Fig. 1 is an elevation of the box or kit in closed position.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of the same when in open or unfolded position.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view with the box in open position.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates the body of the box consisting of a stiff bottom 2 from which rises side walls 3 and 4, and an end wall 5; all of these parts being rigidly connected to one another.
A support 6 for a jar 7 is fixedly secured to the bottom 2 and abuts against the walls and such jar may contain a desired cream or ointment for use for manicuring purposes.
One end wall 8 of the body 1 is hinged to its bottom along the line 9, so that it can be folded down as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and this end wall is also of stiff material and fixedly supports a cell compartment 10 which may removably contain bottles 11 to be employed by the manicurist. At this point it will be noted that when the box is not in use, the end 8 forms the bottom of the same, for when the box is in closed position, it is adapted to stand upright on the end 8, as shown in Fig. 1. At such time, the bottom 2 of the body of the box will come into abutting relation with one wall of the cells 10, and the bottles 11 will lie beneath the parts 6 and 7.
It will also be noted here that the end wall 8 is of the same width as the bottom 2, and consequently, when the box is in folded position, the edge portions 12 of the end wall will come into abutting relation with the edges 13 of the walls 3 and 4, and this tends to reinforce the structure; being as the parts are made of stiff material.
The cover 14 is in the shape of a flat plate and it is made of some suitable stiff material and hinged to the end 8 along the line 15. Consequently, when the cover is in closed position, its edges will abut against edges of the walls 3, 4 and 5. A flat cell structure 16 is fixedly secured to the inner surface of the cover, and when in folded position, lies alongside of the cell wall 1'7, as best shown in Fig. 1.
The cell structure 16 can be employed to house nail pliers 18, cuticle sticks 19, 20, files 21 and the like.
A flap 22 is hingedly connected at 23 to one end of the cover, and it has a fastening element 24 designed to engage a fastening element 25 on the wall 6 for the purpose of securely holding the parts of the box in closed position.
From the foregoing it is believed that the construction and advantages of the improved box may be clearly understood, and it is apparent that changes may be made in the details disclosed without departing from the spirit of the invention as expressed in the claim.
What is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
A manicure kit or the like, comprising a box body consisting of a flat bottom, side walls and an end wall, all formed of stiff material and rigidly connected to one another, the other end wall of the box being flat and of relatively stiff material and being hingedly connected at one end to the bottom of the body, a cover for the body consisting of a flat piece of stiff material hingedly connected at one end to the hinged end wall of the body and adapted when in closed position to abut against the upper edges of the side and end walls of the body, a closing flap hingedly connected to one end of the cover, means for fastening said flap to the rigid end wall of the body, and cellular supports secured to the body, hinged end wall and cover, and adapted to come into compact relationship when the box is in closed position, one of said cellular supports consisting of a rectangular supplemental box having its bottom fixedly secured to the hinged end wall of the body and positioned substantially at one side of a line drawn medially transversely of said hinged end wall to accommodate the cellular support of the cover when the kit is closed.
