Description

Jan. 23, 1934. R. E. VAN ATTA BAG 'Filed Nov. 5, 1952 i BY Jvia ATTORNEY Patented Jan. 23,' 1934 ATENT OFFICE.
3 Claims.
My invention relates to improvements in bags. It is particularly well adapted for use in bags employed for storing garments not in use, a'nd which it is desirable to protect from moths and the action of light.
The object of my invention is to provide a bag of the kind described with novel means by which the garments may be inspected Without opening the bag containing them, the means through lqwhich the observations of the garment may be made having novel protecting means for excluding the passage of light therethrough.
The novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing which illustrates the preferred embodiment of my invention,
Fig. 1 isa side elevation of a bag, partly broken away, provided with my improvement.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged elevation of a portion of a bag provided with my improved means for observation, the flap being partly broken away, and in the closed position.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view, taken on the plane of the line 3-3 of Fig. -2, the flap being shown in an open position.
Similar characters of reference designate similar parts in the different views.
1 designates the body of a bag adapted for the storage of garments or other articles, the body having in one side a U shaped slit 2, which provides an opening 3 and a flap 4'adapted to close the opening 3, and to be releasably held in the closed position by a clip 5 pivoted to the body 1 and movable thereon from the iiap holding position, shown in Figs. 1 and 2, to the released position, shown in Fig. 3.
For excluding light passing through the opening 3 around the edges of the flap 4, when the latter is, closed, and to exclude moths, a sheet like l member 6, which may be cellophane, celluloid,
mica or other similar transparent material, is disposed across the opening 3 and attached to the inner side of j the body 1. The inner side of the member 6 is covered with an opague coating 7 extending from the edges of the member 6 to a substantial distance over the opening 3, Figs. 2 and l3, and which encircles the transparent central portion ofthe member 6.
Said opaque coating '7 may be an opaque pigment, (such as black paint. When the flap 4 is closed, as lshown in Figs. 1 and 2, it overlaps for a considerable distance the opaque coating 7, the
To prevent the liability of the flap 4 tearing (Cl. 20G-7) at the ends of the slit 2, the latter may terminate in holes 8 extending throughthe body 1.
To observe the contents of the bag, the clip 5 is turned to the position shown in Fig. 3, thus permitting the ap 4 being swung on its integral connection with the body 1 to the open position shown in Fig. 3. y 'When the flap is closed, the clip y 5 is swung-to the" position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, in which position it overlaps and presses the flap 4 against the member 6, thus preventing accidental opening of the ilap.
Modifications of my invention, within the 4scope of the Aappended claims, may be made Without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim is:-
l. A bag, for containing articles liable -to dam- Aage by light, the body of which has in one side an opening and a flap movable to and from a position closing said opening, and a sheet like member extending over said opening and attached to said body and having a transparent portion registering with and smaller than said opening and spaced a substantial distance from th edges thereof, `said member having an opaque portion encircling said transparent portion and extending therefrom to the edges of said opening.
2. A bag, for containing articles liable to damage by light, the body of which has in one side a U shaped slit providing an opening and a flap movable to and from a position closing said opening, and a sheet like member extending over saidy opening and attached to said body and having a transparent portion registering with and smaller' than said opening and spaced a substantial distance from the edges thereof, said member having an opaque portion encircling said transparent portion and extending therefrom to said slit.
3. A bag, for containing articles liable to damage by light, the body of which has in one side an opening and a ilap movable to and from a position l closing said opening, a sheet like member extending over said opening and attached to said body and having a transparent portion registering with f and smaller than said opening and spaced a substantial distance from the edges thereof, said 103 'member having an opaque portion encircling said transparent portion and. extending therefrom to the edges of said opening, and means for releasably holding said flap in the closed position.
