JAR CLOSURE Rudolf Pfister, Brooklyn, N. Y.
Application November 15, 1932 `serial No. 642,190
1 Claim.
The invention relates to a closure and more especially to a jar closure or. cover.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a closure of thischaracter, wherein the open mouth of a'jar, such as a fruit jar or the y like, can be closed so as to render the jar airtight, the closure being of novel form and readily insertable in the mouth of the jar or removed therefrom and when actuated will seal such mouth.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a closure of this character, wherein the same involves members, these carrying a gasket which can be compressed within the mouth of a container for the sealing of such mouth to render the container air-tight, the construction of the closure being of novel form and is readily and easily operated.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a closure of this character which is extremely simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in its purpose, easy of operation, as well as application and removal, strong, durable, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention, and pointed out inthe claim hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view ofthe mouth portion of a jar of conventional type showing the closure constructed in accordance with the invention applied thereto and in sealing position.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof. Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 showing the closure released or freed for its removal from the mouth.
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figures 2 and 3` showing a slight modiflcation, with the closure in completely sealing position.
Figure 5 is a plan view of one of the sections or members of the closure, of the modified form. Figure 6 is a perspective view ofthe finger grip or hold. e
Figure 'l is a perspective view of the center post of said closure.
Similar reference characters indicate corre-v sponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, A designates generally a portion of the body of a fruit jar having the contracted open mouth 10 formed f with an internal annularshoulder 11 providing a closure seat.
Removably fitted within the open mouth 10 of the body A is the closure constituting the present invention and with 'reference to Figures l, 2 and 3 disclosing the preferred embodiment thereof, it comprises opposed outer and inner substantially concavo-convexed members 12 and'13 respectively, these being identical with each other and made from inherent resilient metal having at their outer peripheries the angularly disposed laterally diverging unbroken anges 14 providing therebetween a channel or seat for a ring-like resilient or rubber gasket'l5, the samebeing of substantially triangular shape in cross section throughout and occupies the channel or seat between the flanges 14.
Secured by welding or otherwise to the inner face of the inner member 13 centrally thereof is an inverted substantially U-shaped post 16 which projects through a squared center opening 17 in the member 12, while straddling this post 16 is the forked cam end 18 of a lever 19, the cam end being eccentrically pivoted to the post through the pivot end 20 of a linger ring or hold 21, the pivot end 20 being passed transversely through the post 16 and in the forked cam end 18 of-said lever 19 so that both the ring or hold 21 and the lever 19 will be pivotally connected to thepost.
On manipulation of theklever in one direction the cam endl8 will press against the member 12, causing this and the member 13 to be brought toward each other, thus urging the gasket into contact with the inner wall of the open mouth 10 of the body A of the jar and in this fashion a positive air-tight seal is had between the open mouth and the closure so as to completely seal the jar.
yWhen the lever is swung in the reverse direction the cam end 18 relieves the pressure upon the member 12, causing this and the member 13 to separate or spread apart and then by engagement of the finger of the hand of a person with the ring .or hold 21, on upward pull, the closure can be reinteriorly of the mouthneed not be present or 1310 between, a ring-like resilient gasket occupying said seat, a post on one member and loosely passed through the other member, a cam levezpivoted to the post and active upon the adjacent member thereto for compressing the opposed members for movement toward each other to spread or extend the gasket, and a finger ring 'engaged with vthe post and having a partV thereof pivotally mountingv the cam lever.
