This invention relates to a cardboard cigar box.

rlhe object of the invention is the production of a cardboard cigar box in which the front and rear walls thereof make sharp corners with the side walls of the box. The second object of the invention is the production of a cardboard cigar box, which in appearance resembles a wooden cigar box.

In the accompanying drawing Fig. l represents an inside elevation of the cardboard blank which when bent to proper form constitutes the neck of the box; Fig. la shows an outside view of Fig. 1 on a reduced scale. Fig. 2 shows an inside plan View of the cardboard blank before being bent, of which the body portion of the box is made; Fig. 2a shows an outside view of Fig. 2 on a reduced scale. Fig. 3 indicates a top view ot the box without its cover; Fig. 4 represents an enlarged section of Fig. 3 on the line 4, 4; Fig. 5 shows an enlarged section of Fig. 4 on the line 5, 5; Fig. 6 represents a front View of the finished box partly broken away with its cover in its open position; Fig. 7 shows a section offFig. 6 on the line 7, 7 and Fig. 8 represents an enlarged section of Fig. 5 on the line 8, 8.

Referring to the drawing, and particularly to Fig. l, the cardboard blank for the neck of the box, designated in its entirety by the letter A, consists or' one strip of material comprising the longitudinal members 20, 21 and the short members 22, 23. the members 2Q` 2l are indicated at 26 and 27 and the top edges of the members 22 and 23 are indicated at 28 and 29. The edges 28 and 29 are on a level above the edges 26 and 27.

The outer end of the member 2O is shown at 30 and the outer end of the member 23 is indicated at 3l. Between the members 20 and 22 is formed the die cut 35. Between the members 2l and 22 is formed the die cut 36 and between the members 2l and 23 is formed the die cut 37. The lower edge of the blank A is indicated at 38.

over the edges 26 and 27. The top edge 29 at one end extends over the edge 27 and forms the lug 44, and the other end of the edge 29 extends beyond the end 31 and forms the lug 45. The lugs 42, 43 and 44 are similar to the lug` 45.

Referring particularly to Fig. 2 the cardboard blank for the body of the cigar box is designated in its entirety by the letter B, and comprises the central rectangular portion 50 which constitutes the bottom wall of the cigar box. From the central portion 50 extends the rectangular portion 5l which constitutes the front wall of the body. The said front Wall is indicated having the side edges 51a and the top edge 5l. The rectangular portion 52 extends from the central portion 50 and constitutes the rear wall of the said body. The said rear wall is indicated with the side edges 52a and the top edge 52. A rectangular portion 53 extends from the central portion 50 and constitutes one of the side walls of the body. The side wall 53 is indicated having the side edges 53a and the top edge 53h. A rectangular portion 54 extends fron 75 the central lportion 50 and constitutes the other side wall of said body. The wall 54 is indicated having the side edges 54a and the top edge 546.

The walls 53 and 54 are wider or higher 8 than the walls 51 and 52.

A die cut 55 is formed betweenthe bottom wall 50 and the front wall 5l and a die cut 56 is formed between the bottom wall 50 and the rear wall 52. A die cut 57 1s Vformed between the bottom wall 50 and the side wall 53 and a die cut 58 is formed between the bottom wall 50 and the side wall 54. At the ends of the die cut 57 are formed the slits 59 and at the ends of the die cut 58 are formed the slits 60.

To form the body of the box, the front wall 5l and the rear wall 52 of the blank B are respectively bent up on the die cuts 55 and 56 to positions at right angles to thel bottom wall 50, and the side walls 53 and 54 are respectively bent up on the die cuts 57 and 58 to positions at right angles to the bottom Wall 50. When the said front, rear and side walls are bent up, the end portions of the side Walls bear against the side edges of the front and rear Walls as plainly indicated in Fig. 8, Where the end portion of the side Wall 54 covers the side edge 52a of the rear Wall 52. By this means square corners as indicated at C, Fig. 8, are formed for the body of the box, giving it the appearance of a Wooden cigar box. Metallic clips 65 extend around the corners C of the box, to connect the front Wall 51 and the rear Wall 52 to the side Walls 53 and 54.

The blank A is then bent on its die cuts 35, 3G and 37 and located Within the body of the box, and fastened thereto by an adhesive to form the neck of the box. Then the neck is located in position in the body of 'the box it Will be noted that the top edges 26 and 27 of the long members are on thel level with the top edges 51b and 52b of the front and rear Walls of the body of the box7 and that the top edges 28 and 29 of the short members 22 and 23 of the neck are on a level with the top edges 58h and 54) of the side Walls of the box. The top edges 53b and 541 and the edges 28 and 29 are above the edges 51", 2b, 27 and 26, forming a clearance space for the cover of the box to be described. It will be noted that the lng 44 bears upon the top edge of the rear Wall 52 and the member 21 of the neck. The lng 45 bears on the top edge of the Wall 51 and the member 20 of the neck. The lng 43 bears on the top edge of the Wall 52 ofthe body of the box and the member 21 of the neck, and the lug 42 bears on the top edge of the Wall 51 of the body of the box and the top edge of the member 2O of the neck.

cover of cardboard is indicated at 68 and is hinged to the top of the Wall 2 of the body of the box and to the top portion of the member 2l of the neck, by means of the sheet of paper d?) secured to the bottom face of the cover 68 and the top portion of the Wall 52, and the member 21 by an adhesive. A strip of paper 70 is also fastened by an adhesive to the lower portion of the outer face of the cover 68 and to the upper portion of the outside face of the rear Wall 52. lNhen the cover is closed it may be fastened with nails7 not shown, extending therethrough and into the top portions of the Wall 5l and the member 21. It Will be noted that the top face of the cover G8, vvhen in its closed position, on a level with the top edges of the walls 53, 54 and the top edges of the members and 28 of the neck. The material of which the completed box is made is not limited to cardboard but other suitable material may be user. The outer faces of the box may be covered as usual7 With labels7 not shown. It will be noted that the die cuts in theblanks extend from one face of the card board, but do not extend entirely through the same.

Various modifications may be madein the invention and the present exempliication is Leader? to be taken as illustrative and not limitative thereof.

Having described my invention what I desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim is:

1. In a box the combination of a body of one piece of material comprising a bottom Wall, and a front Wall, rear Wall and side walls extending up from said bottom wall, the top edges of the side Walls on a level higher than the top edges of the front and rear Wall, said side Walls covering the side edges of the said front and rear Wall forming sharp corners, means to connect said side Walls and said front and rear Wall, a neck consisting of one strip of material comprising a plurality of members Within the said body and fastened thereto7 the members of the neck adjacent to the side Walls of the body on the same level with the top edges of .said sido wallsn the members of the neck a ljacent to the front and rear Walls of the body havin;l t: ir top edges on the same lcvei with the top edges of the said front and rrinwalis,andlr itending from the members of the ned are adjacent to the side Walls of the body extending 'and bearing on the upper edges of the other members of the neck and bearing upon the top edges of the front and rear Walls of said body.

2. ln a box the combination of a card board body of one piece of material comprising a bottom Wall3 a front wall, a rear Wall and side vfalls the latter Walls having their top edges on a level above the top edges of said front and rear Walls cli s connectinfy 7 D front Wall and side Wails of the box 'and also the rear Wall and said side Walls, a card board neck consisting of one strip of material comprising a plurality of members adjacent and fastened to the Walls of said body, the top edges of the members of the neck on the same level with their adjacent members of said body, lugs extending from the upper ends of a pair of the members of said neck bearing on the top edges of the other members of the neck and on the top edges of the front and rear Walls of the body of the box and a cover hinged to the rear Wall of said body `and to one of the members of the neck and adapted to swing betveen the members of the neck acent to the side ivalis of the said body and adapted to be fastened to the front member of the body and the member of the neck adjacent thereto.
