UNITED STATES PATENT DEEwE.
AUGUST BUERMANN, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPURS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 186,985, dated February 6, 1877; application tiled November 29, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, AUGUST BUEEMANN, ot' Newark, Essex county, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Construction of Spurs, which improvement-is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The object of the invention is to so construct the spur that no twist can be made in the foot chain or strap' 5 that at the same time the spur can be used on either` foot, either side up, as the rider chooses, and to prevent all chang of the boot by connections or appendages to the spur.
In the drawings', Figure l is a side view of the improvements on the spur.
A denotes part of a side bar of a spur B,
a button, to which the strap used to secure the spur to the foot or boot is attached on the part shown at a in Fig. 2, which ligure is a sectional top view of the combined improved parts. The button has its shank decreased in size, as at b, Fig. 2, toreceive one end of the loop C, Fig. 3, then leaving a space sufcient for the loop to turn freely on the shank.
Between the securing-strap and the side of the spur the shank is again reduced in size, to be riveted into the side, as shown at c, Fig. 2.
lf there were no obstruction, the loop C could turn all round the shank of the button, which would, of course, put a twist;` in the foot-chain D or its substitute. -To prevent this the side bar A of the spur is thickened, at at E, just Where the circular end of the spur joins the straight part of the side. The loop C can be turned round just far enough to allow the spur to be worn on either foot, and the rowel to be turned up or down, at the option of the wearer. A
If no loop intervened, and the link of the foot-chain passed through the end of' the spur, it would project inward, and be a constant nuisance by chang the boot.
What I claim as my improvement is The combination of the loop G and button B with the bar A, having the projection E on' its side, as and for the purpose specified.
AUGUST BUERMANN.
