This invention relates to display boxes.

An object of the invention is to provide an improved box which may be formed of cardboard, paper-board, or equivalent material,

and which is adapted to assume a flat position in which the contents of the box may be conveniently shipped or stored and subsequently set up in display position wherein the contents can be readily viewed from the exterior of the box.

Another object of the invention is to provide a display box having a transparent panel and which has a hinged back flap adapted to form an openable closure so that the contents of the box can be removed while the box is set up in display position and the back flap thereafter closed to keep flies, dirt and foreign matter from entering the box.

I find that the improved box may be very advantageously employed in shipping and displaying dates and other edibles.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will be made manifest in the following detailed description, and specifically pointed out in the appended claims, reference is had to the accompanying drawing for an illustrative embodiment of the invention, wherein:

Referring to the accompanying drawings wherein similar reference characters designate similar parts throughout, the improved display box comprises a box having a bottom 10, side walls 11, and front and back walls 12 and 13. The box employed may be either a tube form of box or a tray type box and the details of the constructions of the bottom and walls thereof are immaterial insofa-r as the present invention is concerned. The side walls 11 are provided at their tops with side cover flaps 14 and 15, these being foldable relatively to the side walls and being triangular in form. Their forward edges are upwardly and rearwardly inclined, whereas their rear edges are upwardly and forwardly inclined.

A back cover flap 16 is foldable relatively to the back wall 13 and a complementary front cover flap 17 is attached to the front wall 12. The lengths of the front and back cover flaps are preferably such that the combined length of these two flaps is equal to the length of the box so that they will fit together overlying the side flaps 14 and 15. It will be appreciated, however, that the front and back flaps may overlap if desired. A pane of glass 18 is provided which has strips 19 and 20 of gummed paper secured to its side and front edges. This pane of glass is slightly shorter in length than the. length of the in-' clined forward edges on the side flaps 14 and 15, and it is of such width that it will rest upon the forward edges of the side flaps 14 and 15 when these flaps are in upstanding position. The lengths ofthe sides edges on the back flap 16 are preferably slightly longer than the lengths of the rear edges on the side flaps 14 and 15 so that the forward edge of the back flap 16 will project forward a short distance beyond the top edge of the pane of glass to afiord a finger grip.

lVhen the box is to be shipped, the contents are placed therein and the pane of glass 18 may be placed in the box over the contents immediately below the side flaps 14 and 15. The side flaps 14 and 15 may be folded thereover and the front and back flaps folded over the side flaps. When it is desired to display the contents of the box, the front and back flaps may be open-ed up and the side flaps 14 and 15 caused to assume vertical positions, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The pane of glass is then positioned on the forward edges on the side flaps and the strips of gummed paper 19 and 20 are moistened and fastened to the ex terior surfaces of the side flaps. The front flap 17 can be caused to assume the position shown, or if desired it can be torn ofi. If the front flap is left on the box, the strip of gummed paper at the bottom of the pane may be secured to the top'of the front flap. I prefer, however, to tear off the front flap 1? and fasten the gummed paper at the bottom of the pane to the top of the front wall 12. The

rear flap 16 serves as an openable closure for the box when in display position. It can be caused to assume a position resting against the top edge of the glass pane 18 and by virtue of the fact that the glass pane is slightly shorter than the length of the forward edges on the side flaps, the back flap 16 will assume a position between the side flaps. There is thus sufficient frictional engagement between the side edges of the back flap 16 and the interior surfaces of the side flaps 1 1 and 15, that the bacl flap will be frictionally held in closed position. It can, however, be swung rearwardly and the contents of the box removed and subsequently again caused to close the box. The back flap thus constructed will make the interior of the box fly-proof and dust-proof while the box is in display position.

It will be readily appreciated that the improved display box is of very simple, yet durable, construction and will serve to adequately display the contents therein. Furthermore, although the box has a somewhat irregular shape when in set up position, it is possible for the box to assume a regular shape to facilitate shipping and storing.

Various changes may be made in the de tails of construction without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.

I claim:

1. A display box having front and back cover flaps and side flaps, the side flaps having inclined forward edges, a transparent member and means for attaching the transparent member to the forward edges of the side flaps.

2. A display box having front and back cover flaps and side flaps, the side flaps having inclined forward edges, a transparent member and means for attaching the trans: parent member to the forward edges of the side flaps and extend substantially from top to bottom thereof.

3. A display box comprising a box having a bottom and side walls, side cover flaps pre senting inclined forward edges foldable on the top of the side walls, a transparent member secured to the forward edges of the side flaps, a back flap, hingedly connected to the back wall of the box and adapted to assume a position resting against the top edge of the transparent member and between the interior faces of the side flaps.

4. A display box having triangular side cover flaps the front and back edges of which are inclined when the flaps are in upstanding position, a transparent member, means for attaching the transparent member to the forward edges of the side cover flaps, and means forming a closure between the rear edges of the side cover flaps.

5. A display box having triangular side cover flaps the front and back edges of which are inclined when the flaps are in upstanding posit-ion, a transparent member, means for attaching the transparent member to the forward edges of the side cover flaps, and a rear cover flap adapted to be swung forwardly into a position engaging the top edge of the transparent member and forming a closure between the rear edges of the side cover flaps.

6. A display box having side cover flaps presenting upwardly and rearwardly inclined forward edges when the flaps are in upstanding position, a transparent member connecting said forward edges, and means forming a closure between the transparent member and the side flaps and the back wall of the box.

7. A display box having side cover flaps presenting upwardly and rearwardly inclined forward edges when the flaps are in upstanding position, a transparent member connecting said forward edges, means connecting the transparent member to the front wall of the box, and means forming a closure between the transparent member, the side flaps and the back wall of the box.
