The present invention relates to improvements in toys and has for its principal object to provide a toy of the whirling type.

One of the important objects of the present invention resides in the provision'of a toy wherein the same includes a body constituting a hand grip, a shaft being arranged longitudinally through the body for rotation there in and supporting at its upper end the head of a suitable figure while attached to the lower end of the rod are the feet, means being associated with the intermediate portion of the rod and extending transversely through the 7 body whereby said rod may be caused to rotate in order to impart a whirling movement to the head and feet of the figure with a View of affording amusement.

A further object is to provide a figure toy of the above-mentioned character wherein a string is wound around the rotatable rod and having a pull button attached to the free end thereof whereby an outward pull upon and subsequent release of the button will unwind the string from and then wind it upon the rod to cause the rod and the head and feet of the figure to rotate in one direction, and, upon again pulling the button, the string will again unwind from and then wind upon the rod and rotate the rod and the head and feet of the figure in the reverse direction.

A further and important object is to provide a figure toy of the above-mentioned character which is simple in construction, inexpensive, strong and durable and further well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description when taken-in connection with the accompanying drawing.

In the drawing wherein for thepurpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of our invention, the numeral 1 designates generally our improved toy, thesaine comprising the body 2 which may be formed of suitable material and which is preferably constructed of a pair of identical sections 3 and 4 respectively connected together in any appropriate manner. The body is shaped to represent the body of a person preferably a clown. The inner opposed faces of the sections 3 and 4- are formed with the complementary cut-out portions which coact to provide a central longitudinal bore "5 that extends throughout the entire height of the body. An enlarged cavity 6 is formed in the central portion of the figure and the bore 5 intersects this cavity 6 as clearly shown in Figure 2. A transverse opening 7 is arranged in the section 3 of the body 2 and this opening extends from the cavity 6 to the outer front face of the bodyas also clearly'shown in Figure 2 as well as in Figure 3 and the purpose of this construction will be presently described.

An out- Ward pull upon the button 18 will cause the string or cord 12 to become unwound from the shaft and this will impart a rotation to the rod or shaft and the head and feet of the figure will simultaneously rotate with the shaft in one direction. Upon releasing the button and permitting the same to return to its initial. position, the string will again be wound around the rod or shaft and this action will result in the rod rotating in a reverse direction simultaneously with the head and feet of the figure. In this manner, the head and feet will alternately rotate in opposite directions, the body 2 being held in the hand of the operator during the actuation of the toy.

The simplicity of our improved toy renders the same inexpensive and easy to operate and the same will afford considerable amusement to children.

lVhile we have shown the figure assimulating a clown, it is to be understood that other characters may be represented and We do not wish to limit ourselves to the particular type of figure that may be used.

lVhile we have shown the preferred cmbodimeut of the invention, it is to be understood that minor changes in the size, shape and arrangement of parts may he resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claim.

What we claim is:

In a toy simulating a human being, an elongated body formed with a longitudinal bore throughout its length and a central cavity intersecting the bore, said body being formed with a transverse opening that extends from the outer face thereof to said cavity, a rod through the bore arranged for rotation therein. head and feet attached adjacent to the body and to the respective ends of the rod for rotation therewith, a pull string attached to the rod and adapted to be wound therearound in said cavity, the free end of the string being disposed through the transverse opening. and an actuating element attached to the free end of the string, the feet being detachably connected with the lower end of the rod.
