Description
Patented June 24, 1930 UNITED STATES rAUL A. cnoss, or TAKOMA PARK, MARYLAND BRUSH Appnoation mea Mayen, 192s. serial No, 364,637.
rIhis invention relates to brushes. A
One object of the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, durable and efficient brush, particularly adapted for cleaning iy pans, pots, kettles, dishes or .other similar utensils or articles.
Another object resides in the provision of a brush having a handle which is so shaped and constructed as to provide for a comfortable and pleasing grasp and in which is formed a thumb receiving depression, whereby to enable the user to provide effective pressure on the brush to insure an effective scrubbing or cleaning action on the articles being cleaned.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a brush having a handle which carries the means whereby to secure the handle to the brush head, obviating the use of separate fastenings, and yet effectively securing the handle to the brush head.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of partshereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and set forth in the claim heretoV appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion and minor. details of construction, wit-hin the scope of the claim, may be resorted to with-- out departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
`In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view of the outer end of the brush handle.
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view 0n the line 4--4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawing, the reference character G indicates an OVaLshaped brush head, and 7 indicates suitable bristles adapted particularly for cleaning pans or other utensils or articles. The shape of the brush head and the character of the bristles employed may be regarded as more or less immaterial, save that same be particularly adapted for the purposes hereinbefore stated, the invention involved going more particularlyV to the character of handle and its attachment tothe brush head.
The handle is indicated, generally, by the reference numeral 8, and it is composed preferably of metal and may be highly or otherwise polished, if desired. The body of the handle is f preferably curved longitudinally and also transversely, as clearly shown in the drawings, with the longitudinal edges thereof curved inwardly, as indicated at 9, whereby to avoid sharp edges and to provide for a comfortable and pleasing and effective grasp of the handle.
The inner or attaching end of the handle widens or takes the shape of a plate, as indicated at 10, and has portions struck out therefrom, forming triangular or other shaped securing lugs 11, which are adapted to be driven or forced in any suitable manner into the wooden back of the brush head.
The plate 10 carries front and rear aligning ears 12 and 13 respectively, each ear having a triangular or other shaped securing lug 14 and 15, respectively, struck up therefrom, `and adapted to be driven or forced into the front and rear edges of the brush head. j
The front ear 12 is struck out of the metal ofthe body of the handle, as shown, forming an opening 15 and the handle at said opening 15 is depressed to providea recess 16 to receive the users thumb in the use of the brush. The ear 13 of the plate 10 is in the form of a narrow .extension of the plate, extending downwardly from the plate, as shown Clearly in 'Fi-gal and 2.
To provide for strength, the handle is preferably provided with longitudinal ribs 17, extending alongside of the aforesaid thumb receiving depression 16 and into the plate 10, insuring strengthening of the handle across the inner or front edge of the brush head and the grasping part of the handle, which latter, as will be seen, extends upwardly away from the brush head, to enable the user to readily operate the bristles in the parallel plane of the wall being cleaned and with the users hand, consequently elevated to avoid Contact with such Wall of the utensil. These strengthening ribs 17 may be formed by pressing them into the metal of Which the handle is formed.
The outer end of the handle is provided with a flat extension 18 which may extend laterally slightly beyond the side edges of the body of the handle, and which has an opening 19 therein and which is also provided With a flange 2O for scraping pans or other utensils or articles, said opening 19 being designed to provide a ready means Whereby the brush may be supported from a hook, nail or the like.
From the foregoing, it Will be seen that I provide a handle for brushes used in scrubbing and cleaning utensils or other articles in which the handle can be easily and firmly held in the hand and Which may be readily and effectively secured to a brush Without the use of separate fastenings.
Vhat is claimed is Y A brush holder including an attaching portion and a handle portion composed of a single piece of approximately fiat metal, said attaching portion comprising a plate having a reduced portion forming a downwardly extended ear connected to the brush head, the handle portion having an ear cut out therefrom, forming an opening, said last mentioned ear being ext-ended downwardly into spaced alignment With the aforesaid ear of the attaching plate and being secured to the side of the brush head opposite the side to which the aforesaid ear is connected, said ati tachinO late havino' connection With the to 2D p D of the brush head bet-Ween said ears, the handle portion at said opening adjacent the brush head having a depression to receive the users thumb and thereby afford arm grip on the handle portion at the inner side of the brush head and thereby provide for a substantial pressure on the brush in use, and longitudinally extending strengthening ribs disposed on the opposite sides'of said opening and said depression and extending into both the handle portion and attaching plate to strengthen the side of the brush head Where the handle portion projects from the attaching portion and the brush head.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto affixed my signature, this 15th day of May,
PAUL A. CROSS.
