This invention relates to garment supporters and particularly to an attachment for the latter, the present application being a substitute for an application filed by me on August 7, 1924, Serial Number 730,665.

In applying garments to the ordinary supporting body of the well known form of garment supporter or hanger, which has a central stem and hanger hook, it frequently occurs that the applied garment, and especially ladies apparel slips out of place and becomes disengaged from the supporter body. This is particularly true in hanging ladies garments which have low cut or enlarged neck openings and especially when such garments are applied to supporters hung on a movable display device in stores or other places and also when these supporters are domestically used. This tendency of the garment to become disengaged from the supporter body is very disadvantageous for many reasons. For instance, the garment is likely to become soiled by falling upon the floor, especially if the garment is formed of very fine and easily soiled fabric. Then, too, the garment will become distorted or misshapen where improperly positioned on the supporter body.

It is an object of the present invention to overcome the disadvantages incident to the use of the ordinary garment supporter or hanger by providing in connection therewith a simple form of attachment having terminal engaging means for securement to opposed portions of the upper part of a garment or garments and operating to positively hold the garment on the supporter body without liability of displacement, and, further, without injury to the parts of the gar ment or garments engaged by the hanger.

A further object of the invention is to provide in connection with a garment supporter a simple attachment that may be readily applied to or removed from the supporter body without in the least modifying the latter or the hanging or suspending means therefor, the attachment being readily removable from one supporter and operat-ively disposable on another supporter.

lVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

The numeral 5 designates the usual form of supporter body having outwardly projecting arms 6 and a. hanger or suspending device 7 of hook-shape having a shank 8 inserted centrally in the body.5 and suitably secured. The body 5 and arms 6 may be constructed of any suitable material such as wood, metal or composition, or may be of open or bent wire construction. The improved attachment is of such construction and operates in such manner that it may be 9 readily applied to and removed from any form of supporter and it is unnecessary to in the least modify or vary the structure of the supporter to adapt the improved attachment thereto.

The improved attachment is a very simple device and comprises an elastic or yield-" ing strap 9 having a central eyelet 10 and any preferred form of spring-controlled body clasps 11 secured at opposite ends thereof. In the present instance the jaws of the clasps have angular, squarely abutting ends 12 which are normally held closed by the spring usually engaging and associated with clasps of this character. As hereinbefore indicated, the improved attachment is intended particularly for engagement with opposed portions of garments applied over the extremities of the arms 6 of the supporter and especially ladies garments having low cut openings, and in the application of the attachment the clasps 11 are engaged with the opposed portions of the garment, as at 13, see Figures 1 and 2, and by means of which the shoulder-engaging portions of the garment are retained over the outer extremities of the said arms 6 with sufficient securement to resist accidental displacement no matter to what extent the supporter may be vibrated or moved and without in the least injuring the fabric of the garment engaged. In Figure '2 two of the attachments of the same construction as heretofore described are shown and similar reference characters are applied to like parts thereof, the two sets of clasps at the adjacent ends of the straps 9 being in engagement with an outer garment 14c and part, or the shoulder straps, of an inner garment or slip 16 and by means of which the slip corresponding to the outer garment may be retained intact with the garment on the supporter. In applying the two straps 9 over the hook 7 and shank 8 in the arrangement shown in Figure 3, the one strap bears on the top of the other strap without interfering with the elasticity or manipulation of either of the attachments.

The clasps 11 may be readily attached to opposed portions of the garment disposed on the outer extremities of the arms 6 by opening the said jaws and then releasing the same, as will be understood, and when it is desired to remove the garment from the supporter, it will only be necessary to release the clasps Without separating the attachment from the supporter, and by this means the improved attachment will always The form of the clasps 11 connected to opposed ends of the straps 9 may be varied, the clasps shown being simply for the purpose of illustrating one form of device of this character that may be practically used in connection with the strap 9. Another advantage of the improved attachment is that it can be manufactured and sold at a comparatively small eost,'and the fact that the use of the attachment does not require any modification in the ordinary form of supporter further enhances the commercial value of the invention.

A further important feature of the improved attachment is that it may be used to hold a garment in regular folded form in boxes or other enclosures in stores and during transportation, and thereby eliminate pins or other analogous fastenings that are always liable to tear the portions of garments in which they are inserted. Any

After the improved attachment has served its purpose for holding folded garments in proper shape, it may be applied to a garment supporting or hanging means as hereinbefore explained to retain the garment in suspended position without liability of displacement on or separation from the said means.

The improved attachment is also adapted for retaining mens garments on supporting or hanging means with the same etliciency as in similarly holding womens garments in place on supporting means, and, further, the attachment may conveniently serve to hold boys garments in folded relation to keep them in proper form.

lVhat is claimed is:

1. The combination with a garment supporter and a support engaging element extending therefrom, of a normally inert, pliant strap having an eyelet slidable on to and off of said element, said eyelet and element constituting the solemeans for attaching the strap to the supporter, said strap being adapted to extend in any direction from the support engaging element, and means at the free ends of the strap and operating independently of the supporter for gripping a garment.

2. The combination with a garment supporter and a support engaging element extending therefrom, of superposed pliant elastic strips held in position solely by said element and slidable on to and off of said element, and means at the ends of the strips for engaging and holding garments extending over the supporter, each of said strips being stretchable for attachment at different distances apart to opposed portions of ments of differentsiZes.
