f The invention relates to a hand bag vintended primarily to receive a ladys hat and also to hold such additional light Weight articles as a Woman might desire to carry with her on an automobile trip or the like. 'Ihe bag is designed to hold a hat Without in any manner crushing it,and it is provided with a handle by which the bag may be suspended by the hand or hung about the wrist or sup- ]u ported by a hook or the like, in an automobile or on a railwaycar. The bag is also of such character thatits appearance is in no manner objectionable Whether being carried by hand or suspended in a limousine. The exterior fabric of the bag Will preferably be of a fine grade of black oilcloth or Waterproof fabric, and the interior of the bag will preferably be lined with a colored or figured Woven fabric of attractive character.

rIhe bag is preferably in the general form of a shallow drum, comprising a peripheral Wall or band of suitable Width and side disks or Walls secured at their edges to 'the edges of said band. At one side of the bag the peripheral band thereof preferably throughout nearly its Whole length is of special construction and composed of tWo overlapping members adapted to be fastened together along one edge of the bag by snap-fasteners or the like, for securing the bag in closed position, said construction and the relation of the said overlapping members permitting one of the side disks of the bag, when unsecured by said snap-fasteners, to be Wholly folded or turned outwardly for the purpose of opening the bag to admit or permit the Withdrawal of a hat or other article, as here-- inafter more fully explained.

Since the bags are of flexible material and frequently placed flatvvise one upon another y on a. store Counter or the like for display purposes, I preferably insert Within the bags a strip of pasteboard or fibreboard or the like extending around the inner side of the peripheral band and conforming in outline thereto, as means for stiffening the peripheral portion of the bags and preventing the ,collapse of the bags when on display or held in stock. I may insert the stiifening or reinforcing strip between the outer layer and the lining of the peripheral band of the bag, or insert the same Within the bag to lie against said lining, having used both methods of reinforcement with success. The stiffening or reinforcing means may be so arranged as to be removed in case one should desire a soft, flexible bag. In the bag of the present invention, however, I prefer to secure the stiffening means permanently to the peripheral band, thereby preventing the peripheral band from collapsing under any condition of use or disuse. f

One feature of the invention is to arrange one side of the bag so that the end of the preferably cylindrical opening covered by this end of the bag may be Wholl or substantially Wholly open when the ront side Wall or side disk is folded back or upwardly from the Irain body portion of the peripheral band. In order that this mode of opening the bagmay be successfully practiced, means are employed for holding the flexible material of Which the side Wall or disk side is composed relativelyV rigid or taut. The means I prefer to use for this purpose is an expansion ring or hoop composed of spring material adapted to be placed against the front disk side and adapted to expand out- Wardly thereby drawing and stretching taut th'e material composingthe disk side and its lining. The improved vhand bag as illustrated in the drawings comprises a peripheral wall or band portion generally indicated at 20, a rear side wall or disk side 21 (shown at the bottom in Fig. 6), and a front or cover side wall or diskside 22 (shown at the top in Fig. 6). It will be understood that when the terms top and bottom and rear and front and their equivalents are used in this description they have reference to the position of the bag when it is held suspended by the handle or rests in an equivalent position, the handle portion of the bag being the top thereof,.`the opposite end of the peripheral band being the bottom of the bag, the disk side 21 being the rear side of the bag and the disk 22 being the front or cover side of the bag. The peripheral band comprises in addition to the main body portion 27 which is of substantially the full width of the bag, an auxiliary section 30 which is arrangedto overlap the free edge 31` of the main body portion 27 and preferably passes almost entirely around the free edge 31, as can be seen by reference to Figs. l and 3. The auxiliary section 3() of the peripheral bandsiscarried by the outer edge of the front section 30 and secured thereto by a row of stitching.

The free edge 31 ofthe main body portion of the peripheral band defines the mouth of the 'bag which is closed when the front or Y cover disk side 22 is placed thereon, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. To secure these parts together to hold the bag closed I provide the buttons or snap-fasteners generally indic'ated at 33 comprising. the shank parts 34 (Figs. 2, 4) secured in the main body portion of the peripheral band and projecting radially therefrom andthe hole parts 35 formed 'in the depending tab portions 36 of the auxiliary band section 30. For convenience I provide a single button at the top of the bag and two buttons at the bottom side of/ the bag, as may be seen on reference to Figs.` 1 and 3. Vhen the parts of the buttons are freed from each other, the front or cover side -22 may be turned or folded upwardly or ut- Wardly, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, to open l the mouth of the bag to receiveahat or other article or to permit the removal from the bag of the hat or other article, and thereafter the mouth of the bag may be closed by re- CII 3l of the band which constitutes the mouth-- of the bag is entirely uncovered,-thereby affording ready access to the whole interior of the ba This result is attained by providing eit er a relatively short hinge section 38 between the bottom part of the free edge 3l of the band portion 27 and the front or cover' side 2,2, as shown in Fig. 3; or by entirely disconnecting the side 22 from the free edge or rim 31 of the band 27 andrnsing the tabs 36 secured by the two buttons 33 to the bottom side ofthe peripheral band as the hinges upon which the cover side 22 pivots in folding or turning the side 22outwardly or upwardly from the peripheral band, as shown in Fig. 4.` Either arrangement provides a satisfactory hinge connection between the cover side 22 and the band pairt of the bag. Where the hinge section 38 is employed, the side 22 is secured to the bottormpart of the free edge or rim 31 of the band portion 27 in the manner shown in Fig. l1, in which it will be seen that the band portion 27 with its lining 23 and the side 22 with its lining 25 are folded or flanged inwardly at the corner edge of the bag and secured together by sewing. Preferably a folded strip 39 enclosing a cord 40 is interposed in the seam between the facing inturned edges of theband and the side 22 as a finish to the bag. f.The raw inturned edges of these parts are covered by a binding 41which is folded over the inturned edges and secured thereto by a line of stitching.

Where the hinge 38 is employed as the pivotal connection between the cover side 22 and the cylindrical part of the bag, the cover side is held against the cylindrical part when the bag is closed7 by means of the three buttons, the one at the top and the two at the bottom, as will be understood on reference to Iig. 2, in the same manner in which Vthe cover side is held secured to the cylindrical part of the bag when the two bottom buttons are used as the hinge means between the cover side and the cylindrical part of the bag. In both instances the cover side 22 is held in properrelation with the other part of the bag when the bag is open, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. by means of the two stop strips 37 secured at' one end tothe cover side and interposed in the seam-between the cover side and the auxiliary section 30, and secured at the other end to the inside of the front margin of the band portion 27.

The length of the hinge 38 is the length of the space between the ends 42 of the auxiliary band sec-tion 30, as shown in Fig. 3. The auxiliary band section 30 is secured to the cover side 22 by 'folding or Hanging inwardly the front edge of the auxiliary band section 30 and the edges of the side 22 and its lining 25, as shown in Fig. 15, and securing them by a line of stitching. To add finish to this part of the bag the folded strip 39 enclosing the cord 40 is continued entirely around the side 22 .and is interposed in the seam between the inturned edges ofthe auxiliary band section 30 and the side 22 and secured therein by a line of stitching. The folded strip 4l enclosing the inturned edges at' the hinge section 38 continues around the interior of the side 22 to cover the inturned edges between the band section 30, the side 22 and the folded strip 39.

In order that the front or cover disk side 22 may not collapse or sag in any manner when the bag is open `I provide means for holding the fiexible material of which the side 22 is composed taut or stretched. For this purpose I preferably employ an expan sion ring or hoop 43 formed from a length of relatively small piano wire or the like and bent into ring or hoop form. On one end of the ring 43 I fix a sleeve 44 in which the other end of the ring 43 fits loosely so that the ring may be contractedwhen placed in the cover side 22 and then permitted to expand to stretch out and hold taut the material composing the cover 22 and its lining 25. The spring ring 43 may be placed against the lining 25 and be permitted to expand outwardly, but I prefer to interpose the spring ring 43between the side 22 and its lining 25 so that it will be hidden when the bag is open. The material of which the side 22 is composed is cut alittle larger in diameter 5than the outside diameter of the cylindrical part of the bag so as to permit the spring ring when it expands to form a corner or loop for itself in front or above the joint between the strip 39 and the auxiliary section 30.

The circumferential edge of the rear side 47 in the seam between the facing inturned adjacent edges of the disk side 2l and the band portion 27 as a vdesirable finish to this portion df the bag. The raw inturned edges of these parts are covered by a folded binding strip 48 which is secured to the inturned edges by a line of stitching.

The rear disk side 22 with its lining 24 is held taut or stretched in the same manner in which the front or cover disk side 22 is held taut orv stretched, namely by employing an expansion `ring 50 (Figs. 6 andgll) which is exactly the same in construction and ar-V rangement and mode of operation as the expansion ring 43. In using Athe expansion ring 50, however, to stretch out and hold taut the rear side 21 and its lining 24, I prefer 'to and the lining 25. The ring 50, however,

together is interposed and secured one-end of a flat handle strip 52, and in rthe corresponding front seam at the top of the bag joining the disk side 22 and the auxiliary band section together, is interposed and secured one end of a tab or short handle strip 53.` On the free end of the strip 52 is m'ounted the head part 54 of a snap-fastener'and on the free end of the tab 53 is mounted the shank end of the snap-fastener by which these'parts are detachably ,secured together so as to create a handle by which the bag may be carried or be suspended. In place of the snap-fastener an suitable means may be employed 'for detachably holding the two parts When it is desired to open the bag the handle strip 52 will be freed from'the tab 53 and the main body portion 27 of the `peripheral band will be freed from the cover side 22 and the auxiliary band section 30 by disconnecting the snap-fasteners 33, thereupon the cover side 22 may be turned backwardly or upwardly, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, to expose the entire interior of the bag, the flexibility of the hinge 38 and the tab portions 36 of the section 30 of the-bag shown in Fig. 4 permitting this mode of operation. A desirable feature of the construction here pre-4 sented resides in the fact that the mouth of the bag is closely adjacent to one side thereof and that the main body portion ofthe Iband 20 may be in one piece or strip and present a substantially smooth surface, these features adding to the appearance ofA the bag and also decreasing the cost of manufacture.

For convenlence of the user of the bag in carrying Hat articles such as stationery, time tables -and even articles of apparel, there is provided in the lower part of the bag a pocket formed by a semi-circular piece of fabric Awhich is preferably of the same character and color as the lining of the peripheral band and side disks. The side edges of the segmental pocket piece is conveniently folded and turned inwardly with the side edges of the rear disk 21 and its lining 24 and secured by the lines of stitching to the folded strip 46 and the inturned bottom edges of the body portion 27 of the peripheral band andits 1inlng 23, as clearly shown in Figs. 6 and 11. The straight edge 66 of the segmental pocket piece is turned under as shown in Figs. 6 and 7 and secured b a line of stitching. When the bag is provi ed with the segmental pocket 65 which provides a pocket space between the pocket member and the adjacent part of the lining 24 of the rear side 21, it will be observed thatone-half of the expansion ring 50 rests on the outer edges of t-he pocket plece and that one-half of the expansion ring rests on the outer edges of the top portion of the lining 24 of the side 21.

The improved bag thus far described presents a convenient,- commodious, durable and attractive hand bag, but I preferably stiifen or reinforce the cylindrical part or peripheral band 27 by means of ai stilening of reinforcing strip or strips. One singlestrip entirely passing around the entire circumference of the bodyportion 27 of the peripheral band satisfactorilyjstiifens the band, ut I prefer to use two strips for convenience of manufacture. For this urpose I-leave a transverse slit 57 (Fig. 7) 1n the lining 23 of the band body portion.27 and across the bag in the opposltes'ide thereof I provide a transverse 'row of stitches 58 (Figs. 2 and 6) extending from the top edge or margin 31 downwardly. I then insert the stiifeningstrip 59 provided at its forward end with the notch or shoulder 60 between the lining 23 and the part 27 at the top of the bagl and force the strip around until the shoulder 60 encounters the row of stitches 58. I then insert the stiiening strip 61 provided at its forward end with the shoulder 62 between the lining 23 and the part 27 at the bottom of thebag and force it into placeuntil the shoulder 62 encountersy the row of stitches 58. When the parts are in this position the front ends of the strips 59 and 61 overlap as shown in Fig. 8. I then secure the two other ends of the strips together by means of the rivet 63. In order that the lining 23 at the slit 57 may not ravel out I tuck in the end of the lining over the free end of the strip 61 and'secure it thereto by meansof a rivet 64` as shown in Fig. 10. By' reference to Fig. 7v it will be'seen that the bottom buttons 33 also pass through the lining 23. the reinforcing strips 59 and 61 and the fabric of the body portion 27 of the peripheral band. l

The two buttons 33 at the bottom end of the bag are so spaced with respect to the distance they project outwardly from the outer surface of'the'body portion of the peripheral band, that when the bag is placed'upright on its bottom end, as shown in Fig. 5, the two bottom buttons 33 rest on the floor or other support and thereby `hold the bag in upright position, much in the manner in which the two legs of an-alarm clockhold itin upright position. It will be understood that While the bag is in this position it also rests on the bottom end of the rear disk side 21, so that the two bottom buttons 33 and the bottom end 68 of the rear disk side constitute a tripod by which the bag is held in its upright position. The ba may or may not also rest on the bottom en 69 of the front disk side 22, depending upon the relationship of the two bottom buttons 33 thereto.

I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention but 1t will be understood that I am not to be limited to all of the details herein referred to since these details admit of modification within the spirit and scope of the invention as defined' by the appended claims.

What I claim as my invention and desire I to secure by Letters-Patent, is:

l. A hand bag of the character described comprising, a peripheral band, a rear disk side seamed at its edge to the adjacent edgef of the peripheral band, a front disk side of flexible material for covering the front open space enclosed by the peripheral band, a handle, said band comprising a main body portion extendin continuously entirely around the interior o the bag and an auxiliary section carried by the front disk side and extending substantially entirely around the edge thereof, the main body portion having a free edge along the auxiliary section and the auxiliary section being arranged to overlap the free edge of the body portion, means for detachably securing the auxiliary section to the body portion, and means for pivotally connecting the front disk side with the bod portion so that the front disk side may be odily turned outwardly to expose the entire interior of the bag, and means for holding taut the flexible material composing the front disk side.

2. A hand bag of the character described comprising, a peripheral band, a rear disk side of flexible material seamed at its edge continuously around the adjacent edge of the peripheral band, a front disk side of flexiblematerial having a pivotal connection with the o'ther edge of the peripheral band to permit it to be bodily turned outwardly, a handle, said band comprisinga main body portion extending continuously entirely around the interior of the bag and an auxiliary section carried by the front disk side vand arranged to overlap the adjacent part of the main body portion of the band, and means for holding taut the flexible material composing the rear and( front disk sides.

3. A hand bag of the character described, comprising, a peripheral band consistingof a main body portion extending continuously entirely around the interior of the bag and an auxiliary section extending substantially entirely around the bag and arranged to overlap one edge of the band, a rear disk side seamed entirely around its edge to the adjacent edge portion 'of the band, means for holding taut the flexible disk sides, means for stii'ening the peripheral band and a handle.

4:. A handr bag'of the character described comprising, a peripheral band consisting of j a main bodyportion extending continuously entirely around the interiorof the ba and an auxiliary section extending substantially entirely around the bag and arranged to overlap one edge of the body portion, a rear disk side seamed entirely around its edge to the adjacent edge of the main body portion of the band, a front disk side seamed almost entirely arund its edge to one edge of the auxiliary section so that whenI the front disk side is turned upwardly from the bag it exposes the entire interior of the bag, both disk sides of flexible material, a pivotal connection between the front disk side and the body por'- tion, an expansion ring for holding taut the rear disk side, an expansion ring for holding taut the front disk side, and a handle.

5. A hand bag of the character described comprising, a peripheral band consisting of a main body portion extending continuously entirely around the interior of the bag and an auxiliary section extending almost wholly around the bag and arranged to overlap one edge of the body portion, a rear disk side seamed entirely around its edge to the adjacent edge of the body portion, a front disk side of flexible material seamed almost e11- tirely around its edge to one edge of the auxiliary section so that when the front disk side is turned outwardly from the bag it exposes the entire interior of the bag, a pivotal connection between the front disk side and the main body portion permitting the front disk side to be turned outwardly from the body portion, an expansion ring for holding taut the material composing the rear disk side, an expansion ring for holding taut the material composing the front disk side, stiifeners for reinforcing the body portion of the peripheral band, and a handle. i

6. A hand bag' of the character ,described comprising, a peripheral band consisting of a main body portion extending continuously entirely around the interior of the bag and an auxiliary section arranged to overlap one edge of the body portion, a lining for the peripheral band, a rear disk side having a lining seamed entirely around its edge to the adjacent edge of the body portion of the band, a

7. A hand bag of the character described comprising, a peripheral band'consisting of a main body portion and extending continuously entirely around the interior of the bag, an auxiliary section arranged to overlap apart of the front edge of the body portion,y a rear. disk side seamed around its edge to the adjacent edge of the main body portion, aV front disk side seamed to one edge of theauxiliary section, a handle secured to the top of the bag, and a pivotal connection between the bottom side of the body ortion of the peripheral band and the ottom portion of the front disk` side permitting the front disk side to be turned back from the peripheral band far enough to entirely exose the interior of the bag, and means for etachably securing the front disk side to the body portion of the band, a portion of such means being arranged at the bottom side of the body portion adjacent said pivotal connection to support the bag in upright position with the handle uppermost, the pivotal `cover with the body connection being independent of the detachable means.

10. A hand-bag of the character described, comprisingl a cperipheral wall, a rear side wall seamed at its edge to the adjacent edge of the peripheral wall, a front side wall of flexible material for covering theopen space enclosed by the peripheral wall, a handle, said peripheral wall comprising a main body portion extending continuously entirely 4 around the interior of the bag and an auxiliary section carried by the front side wall and extending along the ed e thereof, the main bodyT portion havin a ree edge along the auxiliary section an the auxiliary section being arranged to overlap the free edge of the body portion, means for detachably securing the auxiliary section to the body portion, and means for ivotally connecting the front side wall w1thv the body portion sothat the front side wall may be bodily turned outwardly to expose theentire interior of the bag, and means for holding taut Y the flexible material composing the front side Wall. 11.
