SANITARY SEAT FOR INVALID CHAIRS.

My invention relates to improvements in sanitary seats for invalid chairs, and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements hereinafter described and claimed.v 1

An object of my invention is to provide a sanitary seat for invalid chairs which is upholstered so as to provide a comfortable seat for the patient, and in. which the central swingable portion is also upholstered so as to provide a seat having auniformly level surface throughout its entire area when the central portion is in closed position.

A further object of my invention is to provide a novelly constructed hinge for permitting the central portion to be swung into open position and then to be moved laterally away from the opening. I

Other objects and advantages willappear in the following specification, and the novel features of my invention will be particularly pointed. out in the appended claim.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, in which Figure l is a vertical section through thedevice Figure 2 is a view similar'to Figure 1, but showing the central portion in open position; and V Figure 3 is asection along the line 33 of Figure 1.

In carrying out my invention I provide a chair indicated generally at 1 which has a seat portion 2, legs 3, a back 4:, and arms .5. The seat 2 is provided with upholstering 6 andlias a swingable central portion 7 which is likewise upholstered as at 8, whereby the seat resembles the uniformly upholstered seat when the central portion is closed.

Reference-to Figure 8 shows that the cen tral portion 7 is pivot-ally secured to the seat 2 by hinges 9. These hinges have slots 10 therein which receive guide and supporting screws 11. WVhen the central portion 7 is swung downwardlyit may be moved laterally, the screws 11 sliding in the slots 10 for perinitin this movement. The central portion 7 is ield in closed position by means of a retractable bolt 12.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that the chair is especially designed fir permitting an invalid to sit up during the daytime instead of being confined to the bed.

When the central portion 7 is closed the chair inall respects resembles a standard one; The central portion 7 will swing by gravity when released by the bolt' 12, and after swinging into a vertical position it may be moved into the position shown in Figure 2.

lVhere the invalid is helpless it isoftentimes necessary to apply force tothe central portion 7 in order to close the portion and to lock it in closed position. In order to more effectively close the central portion, I mount an eyelet 15, (see Figure 3 on the central portion and use a rod 16, shown by the dot upon thecentral portion 7 of sufiicient force for moving the portion back into closed position even though this movement necessitates ted lines in Figure 1, for creating a leverage The rod 16 is inserted After the central portion has been closedit J is a simple matter to slide the bolt 12 into operative positionv for locking the central portion in closed position. The device is extremely simple in construction and materially alds a nurse in car- 'ing for an invalid, and also permits an'invalid to sit up during the daytime, where normally a patient would be compelled to remain in bed all day.

Although I have shown and described one embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of various changes and I reserve the right to employ such changes as may come within the scope of the appended claim.
