IMPROVEMENT IN HOSE-COUPLINGS.
Specication forming part of Letters Pat-ent No. 168,970, dated October 19, 1875; application tiled August 6, 1875.
section ot' my improved hose-coupling.
The tail-piece marked I, which carries the swivel C, consists of a tube, the larger end A ot' which has a screw-thread formed upon it ato tirmly hold the hose, into the end of which it is screwed. rIhe swivel (l has at one end an inwardly-projecting annular shoulder, c, the bore ot' which snugly ts the smaller or contracted end A' ot' the tail-piece 1. The swivel, after having been slipped with its shouldered end over the part A of tail-piece 1, is confined thereon by expanding the extreme end of part A' by spinning or otherwise forming a bead or shoulder, c', which, together with the shoulder a formed at the junction of the parts A and A', locks the swivel on the tail-piece so that it cannot be removed therefrom, though it is free to turn thereon. The end B of the tail-piece 2 is screw-threaded in manner like part A ot' tail-piece l, and its contracted end B receives a screw-threaded sleeve, D, adapted to enter the swivel and enga-ge with the The sleeve D is secured on the part B' of tail-piece 2 by expanding the extreme end of part B ot' the end of the sleeve, the other end of which abuts against the shoulder formed at the junction of the parts B and B' of the tail-piece. The sleeve D tits tightly on the part B', and is secured rigidly thereto, so that it cannot turn thereon. rlhe threads on the parts A and B of the respective tail-pieces may have the crosssectional t'orm shown, or, it' preferred, they may be quadrantal inl cross -section, as described in another application for Letters Pattent filed by me.
In applying this invention to the hose-coupling there deseribed, the swivel and screwthreaded sleeve will, of course, have to be connected respectively to the encircling sleeves, instead ot' to the tail-pieces directly.
One great advantage that this inode ot' constructing the tail-piece and connecting the swivel thereto possesses over the ordinaryA end ot' the tail-piece, substantially as for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my naine to this specitication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM A. CASWELL.
