Description

S. W. HIGGINS.
Angers.
No. 166,378, Patented Aug.3,l875.
WITNESSES. INVENTDH, 6%? aw w w v Aida/1y:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SYLVESTER W. HIGGINS, OF ST. LOUIS, ASSIGNOR OF THREE-FOURTHS HIS RIGHT TO JAMES A. GREASON, OF IRONTON AND JOSEPH R. MEEKER,
OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT I N AUGERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 166.378, dated August 3, 1875; application filed May 10, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SYLVESTER W. HIG- GINS, of the city and county of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Angers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention; and Fig. 2, a view of the lower part of the auger, being partly in section to show the form of the point and manner of inserting it.
Like letters indicate like parts. 7
In the manufacture of angers it has been customary to form the body of the auger and its point in one piece. In consequence thereof the breaking of the point (a frequent occurrence) terminates the usefulness of the tool,
when the anger is complete, constitutes its point) is of the usual construction; but, for the purpose of attaching the point to the auger-body, the former is provided with a conical shank, b, suitably threaded, in order that the shank may be screwed into a socket, a, in the lower end of the auger-body, and which corresponds to the shank, saving that in depth it is slightly greater. In order that the point may be firmly attached in the socket, I dispense entirely with anything like a shoulder on the shank, which might come in contact with the auger-body as the shank is screwed into the socket. My improved point therefore resembles, in outline, two cones placed base to base. The point is readily attached in position, and detached, by screwing the shank into the socket and unscrewing it therefrom.
From this improvement accrues the advantage of being able to renew the point of the auger readily and inexpensively, as I manufacture my detachable point as an article of trade. Further, points of varying sizes can, by making the shanks similar, be used with the same auger-body.
For purposes other than that of the present application, I am aware that bung-borers and angers have been provided with points made separately, and afterward united to the body of the tool. I' therefore do not claim such, broadly; but,
Having described my invention, what I claimas new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a newarticle of manufacture, a detachable point for augers, constructed as shownand specified.
