HINGE CONNECTION FOR SECTIONA'L DOORS.
Application filed April 21, 1927. Serial No. 185,424.
This invention relates to certain new and being in the form of bolts which have their useful improvementsin folding doors, such heads counter-sunk in the projections 7 and as doors used on street cars and operated 9 and their threaded ends extended to pneumatically, the object being to provide threaded bores 16 formed in the projections c 5 novel means for pivot-ally connecting the 6 and 8 so as to pivotally connect theinem door sections together in such a manner that her-s 3 and 4 together through the medium aguard is provided for preventing the fin- 0f the links. gers from being caught between the sections The links are also provided with central when they are opened nd losed, I openings through which a bolt 17' passes, 65 10 Another object of my invention is to proaround Which is arranged the coils of a vide a particular construction of hinge piv- Spring 18, the free ends thereof extending otally connected together by a series of links, outwardly into the members and 4: so as to t f hi h are id d ith t ions move the membersor hold the same parallel forming means for attaching the guard mem- With 0116 another. 70 her so that it will be heldtightly between The end links are provided with apcrtured the sections when either-in a folded or une ed lug-S 19 into which are adapted to fumed position extend thethreaded ends of bolts 20 which A th bj t f my i ti i t r extend through a guard strip '21 having'convide a construction of hinge which is very C ve faces 22 conforming to the curvature of 0 siniple,- strong and durable.
V e the substantially L-sha-ped members 0 and Other and further objects and advantages nd fillingthc space between said meniof the invention will be hereinafter set forth bBlS When in folded unfolded Position as and the novel features thereof detined by early S OWn in Figure 1, it, of course, heh d d l i p ing understood that this guard strip is se 25 In the drawings, cured toeach hinge irrespective ofthe num- Figure 1 is a section through a' pair of h r 0f g p oyed f r pivotally condoor sections showing the door sections in necting the door sections togetherand said folded and unfolded position; guard is 0f substantially the same length Figure 21s an elevation of the same with t g 0f the ClOOPS So that the oran th -d d; nd i uinary crack 1n folding doors of this kind Figure 3 is a, perspective view of ne; is'completely closed SO as to prevent the finh 1in1s gers' of a person from being caught between In the drawing 1 and 2 indicate a pair of the door sections when the door is opened door sections, such as folding doors used and closed, which is of special advantage 9o :15 on cars which are pivotally connected towhen used on doors for street. ears and in gether so as to fold into horizontal'alignlike. mentor into parallel relation with one an While I have only shown one hinge arother as shown by dotted lines in Figure 1. ranged On a pairof door sections, it is, of
My improved construction of lhinge is course, understood that two or more of these composed of a pair of substantially L-shaped h nge embers are employed for pivotally members 3 and 4t adapted to embra th connecting the sections together and that sections 1 and 2 and be secured th r o by the guard strip is connected to each hinge by screws 5 which extend into threaded open a pair of bolts sothat it can be readily atings formed in plates 3 and 4 arranged on tached or detached. By connecting the 15 opposite faces of the door sections 1 and 2. guard strip in the particular manner as These L-shaped sections are provided with shown, it is held in its proper position irext-en- sions 6, 7 8 and 9 at each end which respective of the movement of the door seeare set into recesses formed in the door and tiOnS. are provided with suitable openings through From the foregoing description it will be on which screws 10 pass for holding the memseen that I have provided a novel form of hers firmly in position on the door sections. hinge and guard especially adapted to be The L-shaped members 3 and a are proused in connection with pneumatically opvided with oppositely disposed slots 11 and erated pivoted doors used on cars and the 12 adapted to receive links 13 and 14;, the like in which the sections are connected by links being provided with apertures through a pair of members through the medium of which pintle pins 15 extend, said pintlc pins links which are pivotally mounted at each end in each section and are connected together centrally so as to hold them in proper alignment.
By connecting the guard to the links through the medium of bolts working in threaded apertured lugs, the guard can be adjusted as it wears so to keep it in close contact with the adjacent edges.ott-l 1e' members of the door sections. It will also be seen that the guard is formed with faces fitting the edges of the door and hinge member so as to completely close the crackbetween the 'door sections in such a manner that it is impossible for anyonesfingers to be placed be tween the door sections when the door is in folded or unfolded position.
What I claim is z I y I 1. The combination with a pair of door sections, of an L-shaped member secured to each door section, said members being provided with oppositely disposed slots, links disposed within'said slots, pintles passing through said links, two of saidlinks being provided with apertured threaded lugs and a guard strip adjustably secured to said lugs l s- I a v 2. Therombination with a pair 'of door sections, of a hinge member connecting said door sections composed feta pair of L-shaped members connected respectively to said sections, links connecting said members and a guard arrangedbetween said members and connected to said links. H j
3. Thecombination witha pair of door sections, of a hinge member pivotally connect-ing said sections together, said hinge member comprising a pair of L-shaped members adapted to embracethe adjacent edges of said door sections, a pintle carried by each L shaped member, links connecting said pintles, means for connecting said links central-1y together and a guard strip carried by said links. i
4. The combination with a pair of door sections, of a hinge member connecting said door sections together, said hinge member comprising a pair of L-shape'd members embracing the adjacent edges of said door sections, said L-shaped members being provided the edge of each section, each L-shaped memher being provided wi'thoppositely disposed notches, pintle pins disposed within said 'L-shaped members, links (llSPOSECl. withinsaid notches pivotally mounted upon said pins, a bolt passing centrally through said links, a spring disposediaround said bolt having its ends engaging said L -shaped members and a guard strip disposed bet-ween said L-shaped members having a connection with said links.
6. The combination with a pairoit door sections, of a hinge member connecting said sections comprising a pair of L-shaped members adapted to embrace the adjacent edges of said door sect ons, said hinge member being connected together by links, a bolt passing centrally through said links, apertured lugs carried by two of said links, a
guard disposed betweenQsaid door sections having faces corresponding to the edges of said door sections and bolts passing through said guard and to said apertured lugs for securing said guard to the links of said hinge member. i
7 The combination with a pair of door sections, of a hinge member connecting said sections together, said hinge member comprising a pair of L-shaped members embracing the adjacent edges of said door and piv-f otally connected together by a pluralitvof links, means for securing said links centrally together and a guard disposed between said members having a connection with said links.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature. V
