THE GRAPHIC G0.PHOT0.LITH.39&4`| PARK PLAGLILY- PATENT EEIo.
RAPHAEL DE LEIDI, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR TRANSMITTING MOTION.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,003, dated May 1ll 1875; application led August 2l, 1874.
combinations, as represented in Figures l to 8. The better to illustrate the plan, human hands are represented in Figs. l and 2, as applied to the operating device.
1n all the iigures A 'is the tube, and B the rod or wire sliding within the tube. The two arms O O are pivoted to the rod B. The end ot' the tube A is flared, and closed in the middle, leaving the two side openings for the pivoted arms O O to pass through.
By taking hold of the tube A with one hand, and ofthe rod B with the other, and endwise motion given to the rod B outwardly will cause the arms G O to open, by bringing their inner sides in contact with the central portion al, which partly closes the end of tube A; or they may be caused to open by placing an outwardly-pressing spring between the two arms G O; or these arms are made to spring out. In drawing the rod B inwardly, the outer sides of the arms C C will be pressed upon and made to approach each other by the outer edges a2 a2 of the tube A.
To retain the rod B within thev tube in proper position to hold the arms C C open or closed, as the case may require, a pin, d, in the rod B, sliding within a slot in tube A, is made to enter a side slot, as shown, and as used in a bayonet-fastening.
A spring may be applied to tend either to open or to close the arms C C, as may best suit the special purpose intended.
In Fig. 3 the arms C C are properly shaped for use in grappling a drowning person from the water. In Fig. 4 the ends of the arms G C are arranged to take hold of a mop or similar article. Figs. 5 and 6 represent the application of the apparatus to a slasher, open and closed-in the latter position also serving as a spear. Fig. 8 represents its application in the lightest form, the rod B in this case heilig a wire, B, sliding in the wooden tube A,'the wire being manipulated by a sleeve attached to it as represented. This figure represents its application as a fruit-gatherer.
I claim as my invention- The combination of the tube A and rod B with the two pivoted arms C G, arranged and operating in relation to each other, substantially as represented and described.
RAPHAEL DE LEIDI.
