Application filed August24, 1925. Serial No. 51,900.
This invention resides the provision of an adjustable bedding clamp which is simple as to construction, inexpensive, capable of attachment to various styles and sizes of beds and which will operate in a reliable manner to clamp and hold bedding securely in place upon amattress An object of the invention is to provide an adjustable bedding clamp of the character described in which there provided a novel means for locking the clamp in adjusted position, which means is subj ectto aneasy and quickoperation andcannot be jarred or otherwise accidentally moved out of locking position.
A further object of the invention is to provide an adjustable bedding clamp of the character described which is small, compact and comparatively inconspicuous when in use. i l
lVith the above mentioned andother objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction andcombination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and set forth in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in theform, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Referring to the drawing:
Fig. 1 represents a perspective viewof a bed clamp constructed in accordance with this invention. I
Fig. 2 represents a clamp.
Fig. 3 represents an end elevation of the clamp.
Fig. 4 represents a side elevation of the clamp.
Fig. 5 represents a fragmentary plan view of a bed showing the clamp as it would appear when attached to the bed.
Fig. 6 represents a fragmentary view of one of the elements of the clamp.
The embodiment of the invention shown in the accompanying drawing comprises two substantially L-shaped clamping members designated 1 and 2, formed of suitable resilient, preferably strap, metal, and adjustably fitted together. These members have 55 certain legs 3 and 4: thereof adjustably engaged with one another and the other legs top plan view of the opposed and comprising upper and lower jaws 5 and 6. The jaw 6 is'adapted to engage beneath'a mattress whereas the jaw zi 1will engage the bedding on top of the matress. l l
The leg l of the clamp member 1 is prov ded with a longitudinal slot 7 alongopposite edges f which are notches 8. The corners provided on theprojecting. portions 9 are rounded as at 10. The notches on one sideof the slotareput of alignmentwiththe notches on theother side. At oneend ofthe slot is an enlargement ll which will permit of the insertion andr emovalof a headlflon a locking pin 13 carried by the leg 3 of the member 2. This member 12 is widerthan the slot 7 and notches 8 except at .the'enlarged portion 11 of the slot. The pin is adjustably mounted in ,a transverse slot 1 i -t e g 3 a senenle sei e it 11 .011 its inner side to preventwithdrawal of. the 1 p n from said slot. l vhen the pin ,is adjusted so that it lies in the slot 7,th e two clampmg membersmay be moved or adjusted 'to brmg the ,jaws 5 and Giogether andto force them apart. When the jaws are in the de sired clamping position,,the operator grasps thehead 12 and pushes the pin 13 laterally into the notch8with which italigns, the pih sliding in .theslot 14L of the member 3, and in this way locking the two clamping members in adjusted position. By having the notches on one side out of. alignment with the notches .on the other sidejprovision is made for lockingthe clamp in a greater-number of positions. When the pin 13 is engaged in one of the notchesS, the forceapplied to the pinbythe spreadingaparttendency of the two jaws 5 and 6 insuresthe pin remaining in place. Inasmuch as the members l and 2 are of resilient metal, the jaws 5 and 6 will yield and this yielding of the jaws together with the locking means in- ,sures an effective clamping of the bedding shown at A, on a bed B. The jaws 6 are straight but may be provided with an opening 16 whereby the mattress will extend into the opening and prevent slipping of the jaw. The upper jaw 5 is provided with a similar opening 17 whereby the bedding will extend through the opening and prevent slipping of the jaw. This upper jaw may be corrugated or provided with a series of bends as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, to further insure a secure clamping of the jaw with the bedding.
In addition it may be provided with protuberances as shown at 19 formed in any suit able manner, on its under side to further insure against slipping.
As shown in Fig. 5, two of the clamps are used at the end of the bed to hold the bedding A in position. With the jaws 6 engaged beneath the mattress and the jaws 5 on top of the bedding A, the operator, (if necessary) pushes the pin 13 into the slot 7 and then depresses the jaw 5 so that the bedding is securely clamped. Following this, the pins 13 of the clamps are moved laterally into the notch 8 in registration therewith and the clamps are thus locked in the desired clamping position. lhe particular adjusting and locking means provides for a quick and secure fastening of the clamp in position to hold the bedding in place regardless of the size of the mattress or thickness of the bedding. To accommodate the raised or bead-like portion at the end of the mattress, the jaw 5 is provided with an upward curve so as to form a pocket 20. This further prevents slipping of the jaw 5 or dislodgment of the clamp as a whole.
I claim:
