In a printingpress for reproducing designs in connection with which the prooi" press o my invention is employed, the marrimuinnumber of plates which may be'used upon the machine is four, so that four plate holders' A are provided 'in the proot' press, although it is not essential that all of these H5, holders be used upon every job.

ln this manner it is possible for closely adjacent lines as they appear in the completed design, to be in different colors and portions ot' the design in one color may be completely surrounded by other portions of the design in a different color or colors. y
When such plates have been prepared the are mounted upon the respective plate hol ers A, and the lines upon the different plates are brought into accurate register by means of the adjusting screws 83, the member 74 and the blocks 79 and 80 serving ,as a rigid support for the plates, the edges of the plate being engaged by the projections 84. The rectangularv portion -78 will ensure approximate accuracy in the positioning of the plate in the. holder,V the screws 83 merely effecting 'that minute adjustment which 4may be necessary to secure absolute accuracy of register of the portions ofl the designs upon ythe dit- -ferent plates, one with the others. The lock-- ing hars 86 and 87 engage one clamp screw of each pair of clamps and permit the separation of these clamps to receive the plate while ensuring accuracy in the closing of the clampsupon the plate and the proper holdingof the plates when once in position upon the holder.
After the plates are properly positioned upon the holders, an inking roller having flanged end Wheels movable upon thetracks 75 and 76 is used to apply stripes of ink of the desired width and of the desired color to the plates, each stripe being of a width less than thel entire design, either as a result of limiting the area. of the inking rolle-r to which ink is applied, or using an inkiug roller having a surface area of a width corre'- spondimgr With the desired width ot stripe. Each plate will be inked as many times as there are dill'erent colors to be used upon that plate, the arrangement of the printing lines upon ,the plate determining the color eli'ects secured in the completed design, or the portion oi" the'plate which will be inked by this hand inking roller.. The tracks 75 and 76 will ensure lineal application of the ink to a certain definite area upon the plate.
In some work it is'desired to have a somewhat triangular portion of the impression in one color so as to avoid, in any completed impression, tlie effect of stripe hiring. it helng necessary when this practice is followed, to

Said gears and said racks are utilized merely to impart the desired simultaneous angular ,andl linea-l movement to the cylinder 16, and' hence there is no necessity for absolute precision in the construction of the racks 33 and34 and the gears 35 and 36, so far as the development of pressure between the blanket 17 and the various plates upon the holders A' and theimpression platen 13, is concerned. As the carriage moves longitudinally of the machine, the wormgear 39 will carry the worm 42 along the shaft 43 to which it is splined, or otherwise slidahly mounted;
