GARMENT HANGER.

Application filed September This invention relates to garment hangers and the primary object is to provide a hanger of the usual bow type with locking means whereby the garment may be. securely tastened to the hanger, so that it can not slip oli' and fall upon the floor and thus become soiled and damaged. A further object in providing means for locking the garment to the hanger, is to prevent or at least make more diflieult and reduce the stealing of garments, which is well known to result in enormous losses to stores, especially where womens apparel such as expensive gowns of light and delicate materials are displayed and ottered for sale to the public. Further and more specific objects will be disclosed in the course of the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is an elevation of a garment hanger, embodying my invention.

- Referring to the drawing more-particularly and by reference characters, 7 designatcs a bow shaped garment supporting member in which is centrally and slidably secured, for vertical movement therein, a rod 8 having a hook 9 formed at its upper end. ;The rod 8 extends through a casing 10, and has ahead 11 to secure the casing with respectto the rod, and a spring 12, about the rod, acts to yieldingly press the members 7- and 10 away from each other.

The casing 10 has a longitudinal partition 13, separating it into chambers A and B, the latter of which partly houses the members 8 and '12. It will thus be seen that when the device is locked, as shown in Fig. 2, the pins 16-17 will be held in by the tumbler so that the outer ends of the levers cannot be raised until the dog 28 has been raised by the key, to release the pin 16; and, that when the outer ends of the levers are pressed down the pins 16 and 17 will approach each other until the dog 28 slips over the pin 16.

In the modification shown in Fig. (5, no key is used, the same being substituted by a pin 29 having a head extending out to be engaged by the finger. This pin is rigid loo with the tumbler and operates in a suitable it the tumbler were dispensed with entircly.

The hanger shown in Figs. 15, requires the use of a key by an attenoant or clerk, when used in store, before it can release the garment, and this, in addition to the anti-dropping feature, furnishes the means for preventing much of the pilt'ering and stealing previously referred to. Thus, an assuming purchaser intending to steal the garment could not wear it without an attendant being present to remove the hanger and serve the person, thus watching him or her. And the frock or garment could not be so readily concealed by such a person, when the clerk may be busy elsewhere, as the thief would have to also attempt to conceal the hanger, and as the hanger is comparatively heavy and bulky it would be very awkward and ditlicult to conceal on ones person.

t is understood that various and suitable modifications may be made in the general design and structural details of the invention as herein shown and above described, provided. however, that such modifications come *ithin the spirit and scope of the appended claims.

Having now therefore fully shown and described my invention what I claim to be new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:

l. A garment hanger comprising a bow, a pair of levers, pivotally secured to the bow, the upper ends of said levers being associated with the outer ends of the bow so as to form jaws therewith, and a manually releasable locking device connecting the inner ends of said levers.

7. A garment hanger comprising a suitable bow, lever members pivoted to the bow and having curved ends engageable with the outer ends thereof, a locking device connecting the inner ends of the lever members, and means for hanging the garment hanger.
