Description
Dec. 15, 1925- I. P. SCHAUS FOLDING BOX Filed Aug. 11. 1924 INVEIIVTORQ A TTORNEYS Patented Dec. 15, 1925.
UNITED STATES IRVING PETER SCI-IAUS, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
FOLDING BOX.
Application filed August 11, 1924. Serial No. 731,417.
To all whom it may concern 7 Be it known that I, IRVING Pn'rnn SoHAUs, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Folding Boxes, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in folding boxes.
It is one of the objects of the present invention to provide a folding box arranged to present a novel and attractive appearance and suitable for containing confections and the like.
A further object of the invention is to provide a folding box constructed to simulate a book in appearance.
A further object of the invention is to pro vide a folding box arranged so that it can be folded to a flat, knock-down position wherein it will occupy a minimum amount of space so that a large number of boxes can be packed and shipped very conveniently and economically.
A further object of the invention is to provide a folding box which is of very simple construction, 1s inexpensive to manufacture, is easy to assemble, is strong and durable, and is well adapted for the purpose described.
\Vith the above and other objects in view the invention consists of the improved folding box and its parts and combinations as set forth in the claims, and all equivalents thereof.
In the accompanying drawing in which the same reference characters indicate the same parts in all of the views:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the i1nproved folding box;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal. sectional view thereof; and
Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view thereof.
Referring to the drawing it will appear that the numeral 5 indicates the improved box which consists essentially of an oute: portion or blank 6 and an inner box memher 7.
The inner box member 7 is of rectangular form and includes sides 8 and ends 9. Connected to the upper portions of the sides and ends are side top flaps 10 and end top 'fiaps' 11. The end flaps 11 are adapted to be folded inwardly and the side flaps 10 also fold inwardly above the end flaps and serve to protect and retain the contents of the box. The lower portions of the sides and ends also have bottom flaps connected thereto, there being bottom end flaps 12 and bottom side The outer box member 6 is formed from a rectangular blank and is provided with a pair of spaced, medially positioned fold lines 15. 'When the outer blank is thus folded it forms a rear edge portion 16, a top 17, and a bottom 18. The inner box member is adapted to be inserted between the top and bottom faces of the outer member and adj acent the rear edge, and the top and bottom faces project a trifle beyond the limits of the inner box member, as shown. The lower face of the outer member is provided with a pair of cut-out tongues 19 and when the box is assembled, said tongues are passed through the slots 14 to anchor the inner and outer box parts together.
Thus it will be seen that the improved folding box presents a novel appearance and resembles a book. If desired, suitable words and names may be delineated on the cover 17 and on the rear edge. Obviously the box can be conveniently folded for shipping and packing by detaching the inner and outer members and folding each member along one of its lines of fold, and a flat, compact package results.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the improved folding box is of very simple and novel construction, and is well adapted for the purpose set forth- \Vhat I claim as my invention is:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a folding box, consisting of a folding inner box member formed with sides and ends, folding top side and end flaps, folding bottom side and end flaps, said last-mentioned side flaps being arranged to overlap, and said lastmentioned end flaps having slots in the medial portions thereof, and a folding outer member enclosing only the top, bottom and one side of the inner box member and having ice an edge, top, and bottom portions, said bottom portion having tongues to enter said slots to detachably connect the outer member to the inner box member, the entire box being arranged to resemble a book.
2. As a new article of n'iunut'acture, a com pletely collapsible two-part box, comprising a folding inner box member having four sides, a top, and a bottom, attaching slits being formed in the bottom, and a folding l0 outer retaining member having the inner box member bottom directly resting thereon and covering only the top, bottom and one side of the inner box member, said outer member being provided with tongues for engagement with said slits.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature.
IRVING PETER SCHAUS.
