- This invention relates particularly to im provements in cable slings, jam and trip cable devices and means for clai'nping a load or bundle, composed, for instance, of a number of logs of wood, and means for releasing the clamp or clevis when desired.

CABLE SLING, JAM AND TRIP Application filed December 30, 1924. Serial Not 758,854.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, EDVARD A. IIAYNES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Port Huron, in the county of Saint lair and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in able Slings, Jam and Trip Hooks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. v
This invention relates particularly to im provements in cable slings, jam and trip cable devices and means for clai'nping a load or bundle, composed, for instance, of a number of logs of wood, and means for releasing the clamp or clevis when desired.
An object of this invention is to provide means for maintaining the cable sling under tension around the bundle so that when the cable sling including the bundle of logs, in this instance, is released or dropped into the hold of a boat or otherwise, the bundle remains in lirm, compact condition until it is desired to unload at a destination, when the bundle or load is lifted by means of a clerrick or otherwise, and the sling released from tension whereby the contents of the load or bundle will drop to the ground or, tor instance, into the water.

The numeral 1 represents the cable sling having a loop 2 at one end adapted to be readily attached to a derrick line or otherwise. The cable sling extends in slidable rela tion through an opening 5 in the jam por tion 6, the said j am portion 6 being pivoted at 7 to a trip element 8 having an eye opening at 9 to carr Y the snap hook 10 of a trip Y 'line 11, the said trip element"8 also having thermore formed with a hooked section at one end to receive the jam member 6 in locked relat on, while an inclined notch 16 is formed in the main body portion 14: to re.-
ceive a spindle 17 carrying aguide roll 18, the said spindle 17 and guide roll 18 being adapted to slide in the notch or bearing 16 to adjusttor difle'rent diameters of the cable sling 1. An opening 20 is located in one permanently fastened end 21 of the cable sling 1. Y
In operation it the cable sling 1 in a loose condition or other wise, around the load or bundle 19 to be handled, pull up on the loop 2 by means ot a derrick or other lifting device, the lifting action or strain causing the sling around the bundle-to tighten until the bundle is in a close, compact mass; the clevis including the jam 6, trip device 8, and main body member 14 being in position as clearly shown in Fig. 1, acts to firmly clamp the bundle so that when released at the loop 2 from the lifting apparatus and dropped into the hold of aboat/or otherwise, the load or bundle retains its compactness, the cable sling, obviously, being left around the bundle. When the destination is reached or when it is required to release the components of the load, the bundle is again attached. to a lifting device by the loop 2, raised to the desired height, when the trip line .11 is pulled, thereby releasing the trip element 8 from locked relation with the main body member 14 of the clevis, causing the load to fall apart, as in the common instance of logs being dropped into the water after being unloaded from a boat. On the release of the cable sling the main body portion 14; of the clevis will hang from the loop 21 of the cable sling, While the jam 6 will be held in free sliding relation on the cable through the opening 5 in the jam, the said jam, trip element and trip line swinging together. The trip line, if desired, may be detached from the clevis by means of a snap hook 10.
Obviously, the main body portion 14 of the clevis is released at one end 15 from the cable sling": through the slot 22 whenever the is merely required to place cnd of the main body member to receive the i trip line 11 is pulled and the jam allowed to fall out of hooked relation with the main body member at 15.

1. A clevis adapted for a jam and trip cable hook, comprising a jam member, a trip device, and a main body member, the jam.

A 'clevis comprising a jam member, a trip device,-and a main body n'iem'ber, the jam member at one end being adapted to engage in hooked relation with one end of. the, main body member, the trip device being adapted to pivot on the opposite end oi? the jam member when it is desired to release the jam and trip from locked relation with the main body member.
5. The combination with a cable sling, of a clevis, comprising a am member, a trip device including a trip line, and a main body member, the jam member at one end having an opening adapted to receive a free sliding portion of the cable sling, While one end of said. cable sling is fastened to one end of the main body portion, the said trip line being fastened tot-he trip device, is adapted, when pulled, to release the j am and trip device from the main body member, one end of the cable sling remaining attached to the body member, While the jam and trip device will swing free from the body member, the jam sliding freely on the cable sling.
6. A clevis comprising a jam membena trip device, and a main body member, the said jam member being adapted to receive cable freely slidable therein the cable be ing guided by a guide roll carried on a spindlerotating in bearings comprising elongated slots in the main body portions, the said slots allowing for adjustment to different diameters of cable.
