- J.. B. MYERS SOUND POST SETTING DEVICE Filed March 19211 A ATTORNEY? Patented Oct. 6, 1925.
UNITED STATES AIYSIEIPH B. MYERS, OF MOUNT PLEASANT, PENNSYLVANIA.
SOUNDPOST-SETTING ADEVICE.
Appnation hdlax'ch 4, 1924. Serial Nuul.
Toall whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH B. MYERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Pleasant, in the county of Westmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Soundpost-Settin Devices, of which the following is a speci cation, reference being had to the'accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain 'improvements in musical instrument adjusting tools and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especiall designed and adapted for use as a'soundpost setter, and it is an object of this invention to provide novel and improved means whereby a soundpost may be inserted within the body of al violin and set in its proper position between the vtop and bottom of the instrument.
Another object of this invention is to provide a deviceof this general character having novel means whereby the proper position of the soundpost within the body of the violin may be determined by an indicator extending exteriorly of the musical instrument.
An additional obj ect of this invention is to provide a device of this character which will firmly grasp the soundpost and enable a person to set it in any desired location within the violin body, and wherein is provided an indicator 0r marker which shows the location of the soundpost in its position under the top of the violin.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved device whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive, and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of m invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein it will be understood that various changes and modifications ma be made as to the detailed construction an arrangement of arts without departing from the spirit of t e invention as hereinafter claimed, and in which drawings Figure 1 is a partial sectional elevation showing the device in Ythe inserted Vposition in a violin, beF-igure 2 is a. plan of t-he indicating mem- Figure-3 is aiplan view partially in section of the setting device,
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the inserted and grasping end ofthe setting device.
As -disclosed -in the accompanying drawings, H'fdenotes an elongated "tubular member having an arcuate portion 1 constructed Ona requisite curvature. The inner end 2 of the member H terminates in a plate 3 provided at its opposite end with inwardly curved fhooks 4 adapted to engage a soundpost P. The member H is also provided with an opening in the wall of the outer portion ofthe member and has its outer end 6 so constructed as to provide a pitch pipe.
Disposed lonoitudinally within the member H is a flexible member 7 whose outer end 8 is adapted to overlie the plate 3 in such a manner that its continuation would pass between the hooks 4. The inserted end of the flexible member 7 terminates in a projection 9 extending through and slidably disposed within the opening 5 and providing an operating trigger. A spring member 10 arranged in the opening 5 coacts with the member 7 to urge said member in its outwardly projected position wherein the end l1 of the flexible member enga-ges the soundpost P.
M denotes a second elongated curved member having inwardly facing curved clips 12 partially embracingly engaging the member H for attaching said member to the member H. The extended end of the member M is provided with a disc 13 having a central opening 14, said member M being coextensive with the member H and so adapted that the opening 14 will be disposed substantially in line with the axis of the soundpost heldin the book members 4.
In operating .my improved device, the member 7 is retracted against the action of the spring 10 by means of the trigger 9. The soundpost P is then placed in the hooks 4 and the trigger released. The engaging end of the device is inserted within the body of the violin through an f opening O and the outer portion of the member H so moved as to bring the soundpost to its normal upright position between the top and back of the instrument under the E string. The member M will extend above theto T and a pencil or similar device inserte in the opening 14 will indicate to the operator of my improved setter ythe position of the soundpost within theinstrument body. The trigger is then moved to its retracted position against the spring, releasing the soundpost, and the device withdrawn.
I claim 1. In a sound post setting device, a handle member, means at one end thereof for engagement with a sound ost, a iexible member movably mounted within the handle for engagement with the sound post, spring means normally urging said iexible member in one direction to englage the sound post, a trigger connected wit the flexible member for retracting the same from enga ement with the sound post, the handle having an opening permitting movement of the tri ger, and an indicator carried by the hand e and positioned in line with a sound ost engaged by the first named means on t e handle 2. In combination, a soundpost setting device comprising a handle member terminating at one end in a plate, said handle member being provided with an opening in the wall thereof, said plate being provided at the outer end thereof with 'hook .members adapted to engage afviolin soundpost, a fiexlble member longitudinall disposed interiorly of said handle mein r to engage said soundpost, said exible member being provided at its inserted end with an outwardly extending trigger projecting through and slidingy within said opening in the handle member, means carried b said handle member for urging said iiexib e member into its engaged position and an elongated member secured to said handle member and indicating exteriorly of the instrument the position of the soundpost set within.
3. A soundpost setting device comprising an elongated member insertible within the body of an instrument the inserted end portion of the member being provided with grasping) means, and an indicating member earned first named member and extending over a face of the body of the instrument when the first named member is inserted within sai body.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aix my signature.
