VICTOR E. JOHNSON, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR F ONE-HALF 'ro .mssn A.
SNYDER, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
WALL FURNITURE.
To all 'whom t may coment:
Be it known that I, Vieron E. JoHNsoN, a citizen of. the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wall Furniture; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descri tion' of the invention, such as will4 enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. v A
' My invention relates to improvements in furnitureadapted tofold into or against a wall when not in use,'and the present dis-..
closureis directed to a folding ta le and a pair of folding seats therefor, the object .being to provide an exceptionally simple and inexpensive, yet a highly desirable construction,'for producing an article of thischaracter, or some analogous article, such as an ironing board, folding bed, etc.
With the foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described and claimed, the description being supplemented by the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is an elevation showing the table and seats in folded position.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary perspective view.
Figure 4v is an elevation with the table and seats extended for use.
Figures 5 and 6 are sectional views as indicated by lines 5 5 and 6-6 of Fig. 4.
In the drawings above briefly described, the numerals 1 designate a pair of horizontally spaced vertical bars whichmay be secured in any vdesired manner to a wall of a room. Spaced laterally from the bars l and ldispxosed in a common verticalplane therewit additional vertical bars 2 have been shown. The upper and lower ends of the bars 1 and 2 may well be secured to horizontal bars 3 and 4 respectively. and for securing all of these bars to the wall, I prefer to use screws 5 whose heads may well pass through cup-washers 6 as shownin Fig. 6. Inasmuch as the bars 1, 2, 8 and 4 are rigidly fastened together forming a rigid open rectan lar frame, and as will be hereinafter exp ained the other parts of the device are secured to the frame, the entire device may be assembled prior to being secured to a -Application filed April 14, 1924. Serial N0. 706,508.
wall or the like and may be applied to the `wall as a unit.
Secured to the inner opposed sides of the bars 1, are two lat, vertieal, metal'plates 7 ,which preferably extend from end to end lof the bars l. .Each of the plates 7 and 8 is formed with a-vertical longitudinal slot 9 in front of its respective carrying bar, and
each slot is provided with an outwardly and downwardly curved upper end 10.
A rectangular table top 11 is received normallty :between the bars l and is provided at its ends with trunnions l2 received in the slots'9 of the plates 7, .said trunnions being preferably formed by the ends of a rod 13 secured across one end of said table top. A leg vstructure 14 is hinged at 15 to the other end of the table top and normally lies against its outer side as shown in Fig. 1, the trunnions 12 being then at the lower ends of their receiving slots 9.v Whenever desired however, thv .table may be quickly mbved to an operative position, in which position its innerend is supported by the trunnions 12 and the slot ends 10 with which they co-act, while the leg structure 14 then comes into play to support the outer end of said table top. Suitable catches 16 or the like, are employed to hold the top 11 in the folded position shown in Figs. l and 2.
Received normally between the bars l and 2, are a pair of seats 17 having trunnions 18-at one end, preferably formed by the Vends of rods 19 secured across said seats. The other ends of the seats are provided with hinged legs 20. The trunnions 18 are received in the slotsf9 of the plates 8 and they co-act with the upper ends of said slots to support the inner endsA of the seats in expensively constructed, andit will be very desirable, as the table and seats may be quickly and easily extended for use, or folded compactly, when not in use.
As excellent results may be obtained from the exact details disclosed, they are preferably followed, but within Ithe scope Of the invention as claimed, minor changes may be made and itv will be understood also that other articles, such as ironing boards and folding beds, may be constructed in accordance with the invention.
It may be added that I prefer to secure washers 22 to the edges of the table top ll and the seats 17, adjacent their trunnions, which washers prevent dragging of such edges on the plates 7 and 8.
I claim:
l. Vall furniture comprising a pair Of fixed vertical metal plates disposed in spaced parallel planes, each of said plates having a vertical slot and each slot having an Outwardly and downwardly curved upper end,
a support disposed between said plates andA having laterally projecting trunnions at one end extending into said slots, a leg hinged tO said support adjacent the other end thereof for co-action with said trunnions and said slot ends in holding the support in a horizontal position, and a latch to engage the upper edge of said support whenin a vertical position between said plates to hold it in such position.
2. A device of the class described Oomprising a rigid open rectangular frame having upper and lower horizontal bars and spaced vertical bars, metal plates secured to uprightl edges of said vertical bars, said plates -heing provided with vertical slots having their upper ends curved downwardly, a support disposed between said plates and having laterally projecting trunnions at one end extending into said slots, and a leg hinged to said support adjacent the other end thereof for cO-action with said trun- .nions and said slot ends in holding said support horizontally.
ln testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature.
VICTOR E. JOHNSON.
