Patented `lune 16, 1925.
i UNITED STATES JOHN r. BECKER, or DUBUQUE, IOWA.
CIGAR AND CIGARETTE HOLDER.
Application led October 31, 1924. Serial No. 747,004.
Toi all 'whom t may cro-neem: v
Be it known that I, JOHN F. BECKER, a citizen of the United States of America, residingat Dubuque, in t-he county of Dubuque and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Cigar and Cigarette Holders, of which the following isa specification.
i My invention relates to improvements in cigar and cigare-tte holders.
An important object of my invention is to provide a device of thischaracter which will enclose the cigar or cigarette and prevent the ashes from blowing about, `or falling on clothes, floor, seat, or the like.
Another object of my invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character whichwill be adjustable to different sizes of cigars or cigarettes.` f
A further object of my `invention is the rovision of a device of this character which lsprovided with improved means for allowing the cigar or cigarette to be lighted, but which will also prevent the ashesfrom fallin out. l i
`et another object of my invention is to provide a device of this character .which is provided with means for slitting the endof the cigar longitudinally thereby dispensing with the necessity of cutting oftthetip of t A still further object of my invention is the provision of a device of this character which willbe simple of construction, inexpensive to` manufacture, and strong and durable in use.
Other objects and advantages of my invention. will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the` accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification and wherein like characters of reference denote "like or corresponding parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 isa side elevation of a device embod ing my invention;
Figure 2 is a similar view of the device Vwhen dismantled;
Figure 3 is a central longitudinal section taken through Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a view of a modification adapted for use with cigarettes;
Figute 5 is a transverse section taken on the line 5--5 of Figure 3; and
Figure 6 is a fragmentary view, parts being in section, of a modification.
In the drawings,wherein for the purpose of illustration is sho-wn a preferred embodiment of my invention the numeral `10 desig nates a mouthpiece being internallyl screw threaded to receive the externally` *screw threaded nipple 11 which is provided interiorly with the cutters 12. The nipple 11 is adapted to receive the end of the cigar and the cutters 12 are adapted to cut longitudinal slits in the end of the cigar. `The smoke chamber 13 is arranged behind the end of the nipple and renders proper drawing easy.
The nipple projects beyond the end of the mouthpiecev a substantial distance, and is adapted to be received in the internally screw threaded end of the cylindrical middle section 14. The end of the section 14 is adapted toabut` against the end of the mouthpiece 10 and may be readily detached from the nipple 11, the mouthpiece being provided with a suitable set screw 15 adapted to secure the nipple against removal while the section14is being unscrewed. The nipple is preferably provided with a suitable notch -16 in its end to accommodate a knife blade or similar instrument to facilitate removal of the nipple. The end of the section 14 remote from the mouthpiece 4is provided with threads 17arranged in a long spiral and which are adapted to be engaged by the internal screw threads 18 arranged in the end section 19. It will be seen that the section 19 may be adjusted relative to the scction 14 by means of a very slight rotation of said section 19 by reason of the long spiral of the. threads. his arrangement, then, will allow a large range of adjustment to fit different sizes of cigars.
The end of the sect-ion 19 is preferably slightly tapered with its end turned inward to form a funnel shaped or iared o ening 20 which is adapted to abut against tlie end of the cigar represented by dotted lines at 21. This opening allows the cigar to be readily lighted, but prevents the ashes from falling out, by reason of its shape. Additional openings 22 are preferably provided to improve the draft although these may be dispensed with if desired as the opening 2() will supply a good draft.
en it is wished to remove the cigar butt, the section 19 is removed, and the butt may then be shaken out, but if it sticks, the section 14 may be removed and the cigar butt can then be grasped with t-he fingers'.
This device renders it possible for the ashes to remain on the cigar which greatly improves the flavor of the smoke.
The modiiication shown in Figure 4 is similar to the form shown in Figures 1, 2, 3, and 5, but is adapted for use with cigaretts, the cutters being absent in this form.
Figure 6 shows a modiication in which the threads 17 and 18 are dispensed with and rictiona-l contact relied on. In this form, the sections may be adjusted at will.
It will be seen that I have provided a device which will prevent cigar and cigarette ashes from blowing about or falling on clothes or the like, one which is readily adjustable to different sizes of cigars, and which increases the avor of the smoke.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that various changes in the size, shape, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention and the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having described my invention what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1, In a device of the character described, a mouthpiece, and a casing carried thereby, said casing having its end turned in to provide an outwardly flared opening of less diameter than the diameter of the casing.
2. In a device of the character described, a mouthpiece, and a casing carried thereby, said casing having its end turned in to provide an outwardly flared opening, said casing being adjustable as to length.
3. A device of the character described comprising a mouthpiece, a substantially cylindrical casing section carried thereby, and an end section telescoping therewith, said first named section being provided with threads arranged in a long spiral, said end section being provided with grooves arranged in a corresponding spiral, said grooves being adapted to receive the threads on the other section whereby said sections are adjustable as to length.
4:. A device of the character described comprising a mouthpiece, a substantially cylindrical casing section carried thereby, and an end section telescoping with said casing section and engaging a spiral thread carried by said casing section whereby said end casing is adjustable relative to said casing section, said end section having its end turned in to form an outwardly ared opening. Y
5. A device of the character described comprising a mouthpiece, an externally screw threaded nipple screwed in said mouthpiece, an enlarged smoke chamber arranged behind said nipple, the end of said nipple projecting beyond the mouthpiece for a substantial distance, a casing section adapted to screw on to the protruding end of the nipple, and an end section telescoping with said casing section and engaging a long spiral thread thereon, said end casing being adjustable longitudinally on the casing section and having its end turned in to form an outwardly flared opening.
6. A device of the character described, comprising a mouthpiece, a nipple secured in the end thereof, cutters arranged in said nipple and adapted to engage the end of a cigar and form longitudinal slits in the same, an enlarged smoke chamber arranged behind the nipple, a casing section adapted to be secured to the end of the nipple, and an end section telescoping therewith and adjustable longitudinally thereof.
7. A device of the character described comprising a mouthpiece, a nipple secured in the end thereof, cutters arranged in said nipple and adapted to engage the end of a cigar and form longitudinal slits in the same, a casing section adapted to be secured to the end of the nipple, and an end section telescoping therewith and adjustable longitudinally thereof.
8. A device of the character described comprising a mouthpiece, a nipple secured therein, an enlarged smoke chamber arranged behindsaid nipple, a casing section secured to said nipple, and an end section telescoping with said casing section.
In testimony whereof I atiix my signature.
JOI-IN F. BECKER.
