MARIE A. STARG ARDT, O35
noon noon;
Application filed September 2 2', 15122 To allwhom it may concern.
Be it known that I, MARIE A. Eiraneanntr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful. Improvements in Door Locks, oi which the following .is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in fastening devices for hinged members and is especially adapted for use upon doors.
An object of the present invention is the provision oi a fastening device by means 0' which a door or look member may be held ina partly open position in a manner to permit of the door being readily closed, but
held against further opening movement.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character, which, when in use, may be released from one side only by persons not in possession of a proper key, butmay be readily opened from either side with the use 01 a key.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a -fragmentary elevation show ing the application or the invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view on the line 22 of Figure 1 showing the door in closed position.
Figure 3 is a similar View with the door partly open, but held against further opening movement. 1
Figure 4 is a section on the line 4- 1 of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a sect-ion on the line 5 Figure 2.
Figure 6 is a detail sectional view illustrating the use of the key.
Figure 7 is a sectional view similar to Figure 4, but looking in an opposite direction.
Figure 8 is a detail perspective view oi? the key.
Referring in detail to the drawings, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference charac ter 10 indicates a portion of a door or other hinged member, a portion of the frame of which is shown at 11.
The invention which is shown as applied to the door 10 and frame 11, comprises a Serial No. 592,295.
Secured to the hinged member or door 10 is an attaching plate 22, from which extends a stud or pintlc. 23, having at its outer end a head 24:. Pivotally mounted upon the stud or pintle 23 is a holding plate 25, which carries spaced apertured ears 26 for the passage of the pintle 23, whereby the plate 25 may be pivotally mounted upon the plate 22. The upper surface of the plate 25 is serrated or provided with longitudinally extending teeth and engageable with the upper surface of this plate is a similarly serrated locking arm 27, having openings in one end for the passage of bolts 28. These bolts pass through transverse slots 29 provided in the plate 25, so that the locking arm 27 may be adjusted with relation to the door 10. The outer end of the arm 27 is provided with a downwardly extending transversely disposed hook 30, the bill of which is spaced from the arm 27 so as to provide a notch 81. This hook is adapted to be received within an elongated slot 32 disposed transversely at the outer end of the keeper 16 and is capable of being inserted into and removed from the slot when the parts are in the position shown in Figure 2, that is, when the door 10 is closed. l/Vhen the door is opened and the parts are in the position shown in Figure 3, it will be impossible to remove or disengage the locking arm 27 from the keeper, so that the door will be held against any further opening movement.
Assuming that the keeper 16 is in the position shown in Figure 2, the door may be moved to a closed position, whereupon the bill of the hook will ride up the beveled lip and the hook will enter the slot 32, dropping into the slot so that the notch 31 will be on a plane with the edge of the slot. When the door is opened to the position shown in Figure 3, positive engagement between the locking arm 27 and keeper 16 is efiected, and it will be impossible for a person upon the outside of the door to disengage the arm 27 and keeper 16 by inserting a. hand through the door opening. When it is desired to open and close the door in the usual manner, the arm 2? may be moved to the position shown by the dotted lines in Figure i, one end. of the arm engaging a stop 33 which is carried by the plate 22. This step also serves to hold the arm 27 in position so that the hook will ride over the lip 21 as the door is closed.
In order that the door may be locked and afterward unlocked from the outside, by an authorized person, there provided a key 34 whicl'i is illustrated in detail in Figure 8 ot the drawings and whose use is shown in Figure 6. This key is suhstantialL U- shaped and comprises a short arm 35 and a relatively long arm 36. The key is further provided with an opening 37, which is adapted to receive a pin 38 which extends tron'i the bottom of the plate 1d and is spaced slightly from the bracket 12. In the use of the. key, the latter is mounted upon the pin 38 with the arm 36 positioned upon the keeper l6 and against the bracket 12, the keeper having a lip 39 which may be engaged over the edge of the key. When in this position, the arm 35 of the key extends beneath the opening 32, so that the hook 30 will not pass downward through this opening, but will remain in the position shown in Figure 6. When the parts are in the position shown in Figure 2, the door may be opened and the key positioned as above stated, whereupon, the door may be again closed so that the hook will keep the position shown in Figure 6. Upon again opening the door, this hook will ride over the beveled edge of the opening 32 so as to release the locking arm from the keeper.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention what is claimed is A fastening device comprising in combination with a stationary member and a hinged member capable of being moved to an open position. and a closed position, a keeper having an operative portion provided with an arcuate slot, said keeper mounted on said stationary member by a pivot attending through said slot whereby said kee er may have pivotal and sliding movement, a spring plate mounted upon the pivot for the keeper, a lug carried by said spring plate and adapted to enter a depression in said keeper plate to secure the same against movement, an attaching plate secured to the movable member and having a stud projecting therefrom and forming a horizontal pivot, a locking arm pivoted on said stud, means carried by the locking arm for engagement with the keeper, said means being such that said locking arm is disengageable from, said keeper only when the movable member is in closed position, said locking arm adapted to be swung on said stud to an inoperative position away from the keeper, and means carried by the attachingplate for supporting the locking arm in its inoperative posit-ion.
