have the drawbacks -that they are subjectl to frequent disturbances in working and that they constitute a bulky additional apparatus. According to'. the present invention the drawbacks in question of well known atomizing devices for liquid containers are avoided by using, for the purpose yof emptying the container, a piston ance and also its compactness, corresponds to a simple closing device for the container. The pump is so designed according to the invention that` the pump piston can. be connected to the neck whilst the pump cylinder or barrel which, is closed by a cover, forms a handle which is vertically adjustable relatively tothe containers() that by periodically raising and lowering it, the liquid is pumped over the piston through a pipe or tube projecting into the said liquid. p
The shape of the pump according lto which both the piston and the cylinder are above the container and surround its neck, results in the possibility of giving the pump barrel a relatively large diameter so that a relatively large volume of liquid can be pumped with a short stroke.
The pump can vbe mounted on a narrow neck of a vessel such as an ordinary scent bottle. f
. A construction of the improved pump and atomizing device is illustrated by way of J'example in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 shows it in a-Xial section, and Figure 2 shows a modification of v'the same, also in axial section.
In Figure l, 1 is the 'upperpart of a liquid container. The neck 2 of the same is screw-threaded and on the said screw! thread-is screwed the piston 3 of the pump. AThe piston has a cup-leather 41 which forms a fluid tight joint against the wall of the barrel 5. 6 is a cover which closes the cylinderspace situated above the cup-` leather et.
0n the piston body 3 is mounted a tube 7, 8 vwhich projects into the liquid in the container 1. 9 is a check valve for closing the narro-wertube section 8. On the cover 6 of the cylinder is a rod 10 which carries a stop 11 for limiting the stroke of the barrel 5 relatively tothe piston 3, so that .when the cylinder 5 is raised, it strikes the reduced portion or throat 12 at the upper end of the tubesection 7. 13 is a transverse bore in the cylinder cover 6 whichleads toV an atomizing or spraying nozzle 14 which can be of any desire-d, or kno-wn construction. and forming a check valve for closing the connection of the bore 13 with the interior of the cylinder 5.-
The working of the pump is as follows: assuming that Vthe container 1 is filled with liquid and thel cylinder 5 is in its lowestl position.. If the'cylinder 5 is raised, the
liquid, owing to the reduced pressure produced in the cylinder space, will be drawn through the tube 7, 8 and pass intothe cylinder space. During this time ball 15 runs backwards in the boret 13 and closesv its connection with the interior of the cylinder and prevents admissionof air into the cylinder. During the subsequent depression of the cylinder 5, during which the check valve 9 closes, the liquid contained in the cylinder will be expelled through the bore 13 and the atomizing nozzle 14, and atomized.
It will be seen from the foregoing that the invention can be adapted to bottles of any desired size, even small pocket bottles 15 is a ball movable in the bore 13` without requiring any more space than a bottle with an ordinary closing device. This result is obtained by securing the piston to.
the neck of the bottle whilst the cylinder is arranged-over the bottle neck. This great advantage of the new construction can be retained even if the pump tube 7, 8 is secured to the cylinder cover instead of to the piston and participates in the movement of the cylinder. In such a case it is merely necessary to make it possible for the air to passfrom the cylinder, during the depression of the latter, into the bottle space above the liquid in order to ensure that the'pressure of the said air will expel the liquid through the pump tube. l
the cylinder cover by 19. On the cylinder` cover is mounted the pump tube 20, the up- -per end of Which adjoins a transverse bore 21 in the. cylinder cover 19. When the cover 19` is depressed, a rubber plate or washer 22 mounted on the tube 20 is lifted pff from the bottom face of the stop-per 17 so that air from the cylinder can pass by the pumptube 20 into the vessel above the level of the liquid, and the' liquid can escape through the pump tube and the transverse bore 21. The cylinder cover is always held in this case in the upper position by means of a helical spring 23.
What I claim is 1. A piston pump. for emptying liquid containers comprising a 'piston member adapted to be firmly connected With the mouth piece of the container and a cylinder open at one end and closed .at the other slidably mounted on said piston member and constituting the operating handle of the pump, the cylinder provided with an exit at its closed end, one of said pump elements provided with a tubular member forming a passage from below the piston member to above same.
2. A piston pump for emptying liquid containers comprising a piston member adapted to be firmly connected with the mouth piece of the container and a cylinder open at one end and closed 'at the other slidably mounted on said piston member and constituting the operating handle of the pum the cylinder provided with an exit at its closed end, the piston member carryl remesa ing on its side opposite the cylinder cover a rising pipe for the liquid to be pumped, said pipe opening into the cylinder space and being provided With a check valve.
3.' A piston -pumpfor emptying liquid containers comprising a piston member adapted to be firmly connected with the mouth piece of the container and a cylinder open at one end and closed at the other slidably mounted on said piston. member and constituting the operatinghandle of the pump, an exit from inside to outside of said cylinder at its closed end, said exit terminating in a spraying nozzle, the piston member carrying o n its side opposite the cylinder cover a rising pipe for the liquid to be pumped, said pipe opening into the cylinder space and being provided With a check valve.
4. A sprayer bottle comprising a bottle c having a neck piece, a cap mounted on said neck piece, said cap carrying a tube projecting into the bottle and provided with a check valve, the tube fopening above said cap, the cap forming a piston member, a cylinder slidably mounted .on said piston member and forming the operating handle of a pump, means being provided to limit the operating stroke of said cylinder and handle, a conduit from inside to outside of said cylinderr at the end of the cylinder remote from the end mounted on said piston member and a sprayer nozzle mounted in the mouth of said conduit.
