Description

PATENT OFFICE.
' JAMES H. LANE, on wAco, TEXAS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 150.2 16, dated April 28, 1874; application filed February 21, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMEs H. LANE, M. D., of aco, in the county of McLennan and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bale-Ties, of which the ibllowing is a specification:
The invention relates to an improved form of tie or buckle for cotton-bale bands, the same consisting of a metal plate provided with a hook at either or both ends, and with I one or morehooks located intermediately of the ends, as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side view, tie, with the ends of the wire bail attached as when in use. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts.
A is the tie. B is the band. The tie is made of a metallic plate of suitable size and strength, having at each end a hook, C. These hooks are made by cutting away the ends of the plate so as to have central tongues, which are bent over to form hooks, as seen in the drawing. A loop, D, is made in each end of the wire band and attached to the hook O G, as represented. The bales will vary in size, and the bands will vary somewhat in length.
To provide for this, and to insure a good fit of the wire band to the bale, I form one or more showing the construction of the intermediate hooks, E, by cutting pieces from the plate and turning them to form hooks, as seen. One or both of these hooks may be used, according to the length of the band and size of the bale. The band and tie or buckle, it will-be understood, are applied when the bale is in the press. When the pressure is removed the bale expands, so that the band is tightly strained around the bale. This tie is especially designed for wire bands, instead of the flat bands in common use, as far greater strength is secured in a given weight of metal thereby; besides, it greatly reduces the expense of baling cotton, both in the weight and cost of the bands and ties, as well as in the labor required in putting them on, while the strength and security obtained by the wire band are fully equal if not superior to that of the ordinary flat band.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The tie or buckle A, provided with end hooks O and one or more hooks, E, located intermediately of the ends of the tie, as shown and described.
