- T. W. CANFIELD FILM CLAMPING MEANS FOR PICTURE HEELS Filed July 10 1923 DDIIIDUDIJUDD UEIEJDDDDD Patented June 10, 1924.
I UNITED Mutt OFFICE.
FILM-CLAMPING MEANS FOR PICTURE REELS.
Application filed July 10, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that THURLOW W. CANFIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Murdo, in the county of Jones and State of South Dakota, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Film-Clamping Means for Picture Reels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a film clamping means for picture reels and it has for its object to provide a device of a very simple and inexpensive nature mounted upon the hub of a moving picture reel or spool, operable from the exterior of the reel and serving to clamp the end of a roll of film to the reel, during the initial winding of the film upon said reel.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in the detail description which follows.
In the accompanying drawing:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a reel having the attachment applied thereto;
Fig-2 is a vertical sectional View upon line 22 of Fig. 1.
Like numerals designate corresponding parts in both of the figures of the drawing.
Referring to the drawing 5 designates the side webs of a reel adapted to receive a roll of motion picture film. These side webs 5 i and a central hollow hub 6 of sheet metal constitute the reel of a usual and well known construction. In carrying out the invention, I provide a flap or clamp 7 which is fixed to a pintle 8, said pintle being journaled in said webs 5 and having a crank extension 9 upon one of its ends by which the clamp 7 may be swung to and from gripping position with respect to the hub 6, it being understood that it is the function of the clamp 7 to clamp an end of a length of moving picture film 10 between itself and the face of the hub. A spring 11 is secured at its outer end to the clamp 7 and spans the hub and has its other end engaged with the hub at the far side thereof. Any desired way may be resorted to of attaching the end of the spring 11 to the hub. In the present instance I have shown the end of the spring Serial No. 650,719.
merely passed through the usual slot 12 which in ordinary reels of this character exists by reason of the factthat the hub 6 is made of a length of sheet metal bent to shape, and have then turned the end of the spring over, as indicated at 13, to prevent its withdrawal. Thus, when, by manipulating the crank 9, the clamp 7 is swung upon the pintle 8 away from the face of the hub, the spring 11 is placed under tension. Then an end of the film 10 is slipped into place beneath the clamp and the clamp is permitted to return to clamping position under the action of the spring 11. I may bend the end of the film to make it of more than one thickness beneath the clamp to thereby secure a greater holding efiect, if desired.
It is to be understood that the invention 1s not limited to the precise construction set forth but that it includes within its purview whatever changes fairly come within either the terms or the spirit of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
1. The combination with a reel comprising a pair of side webs and ahub, of an arcuate clamp shaped to conform to a part of the surface of the hub, a pintle by which said clamp is carried, said pintle being journaled in the side webs of the reel and having a crank extension lying outside of one of said side webs, of spring means for drawing the arcuate clamp toward the hub.
2. The combination with a reel comprising a pair of side webs and a hub, of an arcuate clamp shaped to conform to a part of the surface of the hub, a pintle by which said clamp is carried, said pintle being journaled in the side webs of the reel and having a .crank extension lying outside of one of said side webs and a spring one end of which is connected to said clamp and the other of which extends through said hub to the opposite side thereof at which opposite side it is attached to the hub.
In testimony whereof he aifixes his signature in the presence of two witnesses.
THURLOW W. CANFIELD.
