To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES JUMoNviLLr., a citizen of thc United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of- New York, have invented a new and Improved Mop, of which the following is a full,v clear, and exact description.
rlhe present invention relates to mops, and it pertains more particularly to mops of the self` wringing type.
It is one of the primary .objects of the present invention to provide a new and improved form of mop in which the head may be readily detached from the handle.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a new and improved form of mop head, which .may be manufactured and sold as a unit and as a renewal for mops.
It is a further object of the invention to so construct a mop handle and head that they may be readily attached to and detached from each other.
With the above and other objects in view, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which the figure is a longitudinal sectional view of the head end of a. mop constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the reference character 5 designates the mop handle, and 6 designates a reduced portion thereof which extends from a point adjacent one end throughout the length of the handle. The extremity of the reduced portion 6 is formed with a threaded portion 7, and said threaded portion extends inwardly from the end as shown. Surrounding the reduced po-rtion 6 is a metal sleeve 8, and said metal sleeve 8 is provided with a screw-threaded portion 9 adapted for engagement with the threaded portion 7 of the reduced portion 6 of the handle. This threaded sleeve has its end closed and is provided with an openinglO for a purpose to be hereinafter described.
The reference character 11 designates the mop head, and said mop head is formed of a fabric suitable for the purpose. This mop head is connected at one end to a sliding sleeve 12, by means of a suitable binding 13. The other end of the mop is secured by a suitable binding 14 to a ferrule 15. This ferrule 15 is screw-threaded as indicated by the reference character 16, and is adapted for engagement with the threaded portion o-f the metallic member 8 as clearly shown in the drawings. The ferrule is provided with v an opening 17, adapted for registration with the opening 10 in the metallic sleeve 8. The inner end of the ferrule is flared as indicated by the reference character 18, in order to facilitate the insertion of the threaded end of the metallic sleeve 8 therein, andl said flared portion serves as a guide for said metallic sleeve 8 and the handle during the attachment of the ymop head to the handle.
The device functions in the yiollowing manner:
Assuming that the mop head has become worn and it is desired to replace the same, the bunch portion 20 of the mop head is grasped and the handle is turned with respect thereto, thus unscrewing the handle and disengaging the metallic sleeve carried thereby from the ferrule 15. After this has been done, the mop head is detached from the mop handle by sliding the sleeve 12 over the metallic sleeve 8. A new head is now positioned by passing the handle 5 through the sleeve 12 carried by the new head until the threaded end of the metallic sleeve 8 engages t-he ferrule 15, after which the handle is rotated and the threads of the sleeve 8 engage with the threads of the ferrule 15. The handle is then turned up tight to secure the mop head in place.
When it is desired to renew the mop during the use thereof, the sleeve 12 is grasped in one hand and the handle 5 in the other. The handle 5 is then rotated to the right to twist the mop '11 about the metallic sleeve 8. As this twisting action takes place, the water is forced from the mop in a manner .common to mops of this type.
It is to be understood that the several operating parts are made of brass or other suitable metal which does not corrode in the presence of water, and that owing to the registration of the openings 10 and 17 in the sleeve 8 and the ferrule 15, respectively, the water whichpasses between the ferrule and sleeve 8 is allowed to drain from the interior of thev ferrule and the sleeve to prevent a decaying of the handle 5.
From the foregoing it is apparent that the present invention provides a new and improved structure in mops, lby means of which a renewable head is had, and, furthermore, that in mops of this type the wringing action serves to at all times maintain the head in position upon the mop since -said wringing action serves to tighten the threaded engagement between the ferrule carried by the mop head and the metallic sleeve carried by the mop handle.
I claim:
l. n a mop, a mop handle having a screw-threaded extremity, an elongated sleeve adapted to enclose a substantial portion of the mop handle, said sleeve having a screw-threaded end adapted for interengageinent with the Screw-threaded end of the mop handle, mop fabric, and a ferrule carried by the mop fabric and adapted to receive and have intcrengagement Awith the screwthreaded end ot Said mop handle enclosing sleeve.
2. A head Jfor inops, comprising, in combination, mop fabric, a ferrnle screw threaded for engagement with threads on the end of a mop handle, and a. sleeve adapted to encircle a mop handle and to be slidable therealong, said, mop fabric being attached at one end to saidf lferrule andrbeing attached at the other end to the sleeve, and said ferrnle having a flared inner end and a capped outerv end provided with a drain opening.
