PATENT OFFIC MAT'I'IE KELLEY REDFORD, OF LEXINGTON, KENTUCKY.
ROMPERS.
Application T 0 all whom it may concern B it known that I, MATTIE K. Rnnronn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lexington, in the county of Fayette and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rompers, of which the following is ztspecitication.
The object of my invention to provide a new construction in romperstor children.
The further object of my invention is to produce rompers of such construction and design that a minimum number of buttons may be used.
The further object of my invention is to produce rompers in the construction of which the number of seams to be used are reduced to a minimum.
My invention consists of rompers in which the leg portion, or that portion below the waist line is made of a single piece of material which is folded upon itself in the completed romper.
My invention consists further in so arranging the material in the waist portion of the rompers and the leg portion 0! the rompers. that the leg portion and body portion may be adjusted vertically. relatively, to each other. to acon'imodate the growth of the child; and with the object stated. and other objects, in view. my invention I )ll sists of the parts and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a. perspective view illustrat ing the romper garment as worn.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the romper garment, showing the flap of the leg portion in open position.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of a blank of material from which the leg portion of the garment is formed, and
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the blank of the le portion in folded position.
designate that portion of the rompers below the waist line as the leg portion. and that portion of the rompers above the waist line as the body portion.
The, leg portion of the rompers is cut from a single piece of material 1. which. when out is folded upon itself. on the line 2. The top and bottom edge of the iaiaterial 1. is cut concave along its middle portion. as at 3. and the corners are cut off diagonally and concaved. as at 4. The bottom line of the piece 1 is of a duplicate contour to that of the top edge just described. At the Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 492.395.
bottom edge of the leg portion, 1, I out two slits, 5. extending an appropriate distance from the bottom edge, the portion of the material between the said slits, in the compl tcd article, constituting the flap, 6.
Both sides of the leg portion, 1, are of duplicate shape, therefore, I have described but one side. Beginning at the bottom of the corner concave portion 4. the material is cut inwardly on a diagonal line. as at 7, and at the bottom of this line. the material is cut to form a substantial half oval recess, 8. From the outer lower corner of the recess, the material is cut on an OlltWflIdlYBXtBIld ing diagonal line, 9. meeting the upper corner of the lower concave line 4.
IVhen the leg portion, 1, is cut as described. the material is folded on the line 2, thus bringing the top and bottom ends of the material together. The edges 7 and 9 are sewed together so that thereby the elliptical recesses 8 constitute leg openings.
The edges 4 are not attached. but a pocket 10 is sewed to said edges in position within the leg portion.
The waist or body portion. 11, is formed similarly t the usual patterns for waists or body portions. but the sleeves, 12. are set in and fitted with the shoulder seam. The waist or body portion and the leg portion are fastened together by a simple seam. but it will be noted from the drawing that the waist or body portion is provided with a short skirt. 13. extending a substantial distance below the seam connecting the leg portion and body portion. The object of this skirt is to permit of changing the point of attachment of the leg portion to the body portion to accommodate the growth of the child. for instance, if the child has an abnormal growth, the leg portion and body portion may be connected together at the point shown in the drawing or at any point down to the xtreme lower edge of the skirt 13.
The back edges of the body portion are connected by concealed buttons, while the flap. 6. is connected to the body portion at the waist line by means of concealed buttons and other fasteners. there being a concealed fastener. 14.. intermediate the top and bottom of the flap at each side thereof.
My improved rompers are simple in construction. requiring a minimum amount of sewing, and is of such design and construction that there is practically no possibility of the parts gaping along the lines of connection.
What I claim is 1. 1-K garment having a waist and leg portion permanently secured together, the leg portion bein composed of front and rear sections fol ed upon themselves with leg openings at the lower corners thereof. a flap formed in the rear section of the leg portion and adapted to be secured to the waist portion, and pockets formed in the upper corners of the leg portion between said front and rear sections.
2. A romper garment having at waist and leg portion permanently secured together, the leg portion being formed of front and rear sections folded transversely upon themselves with leg openings at the lower corners thereof. pockets in the upper corners there of, the sides of said leg portion intermediate the pockets and leg openings being perinanently united, and a flap in the rear leg section whereby a portion of said rear section i may be opened.
3. A blank for the leg portion of romper garments, comprising a piece of material having concaved upper and lower edges, and conoaved corners, oppositely arranged recesses, substantially midway of said material at the side edges thereof, the side edges of said material between the concaved corners and the above mentioned recesses be ing straight.
4. A blank for the leg portion of romper garments comprising a piece of material having concaved upper and loweredges and concaved corners and oppositely arranged recesses substantially midway of said material at the side ed es thereof, the lower section of said materlal being provided. with a plurality of slits, the side edges of the material between the concaved corners and the above mentioned recesses being straight.
5. A blank for the leg portion of romper garments comprising a piece ofmaterial having concaved upper and lower edges and concaved corners and oppositely arranged recesses substantially midway of said material at the side edges thereof, the lower section of said material bein provided with a plurality of slits arrange d substantially at right angles to the concaved lower edge, the side edges'of the material between the concaved corners and the above mentioned recesses being straight.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature.
MATTIE KELLEY REDFORD.
