UNITED STATES JAMES P. PRIDGEON, OF MARION COURT-HOUSE, SOUTH CAROLINA, ASSIGNOR TO J. P. PRIDGEON 8c OO., OF SAME PLAGE.
IM PROVEMENT IN COTTON-PRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,@41, dated July 15, 1873; application filed May 1o, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES P. PRIDGEoN, of Marion Court-House, in the county of Marion and State of South Carolina, have invented a new and Improved Cotton-Press, of whichthe following is a specification:
In my improved press the follower which works upward in a Vertical case has two arms jointed at one end to the lower side, one near each end, which, at the other end, have rollers to roll forward and backward on the bedframe, and a rope is attached to the follower at one end, and passes up over apulley at the top of the frame 5 thence down under a pulley at the .end of the follower; thence under another near the end of the arm of that end v of the follower; thence under the arm to a return to the horizontal line, or nearly, and
let the follower down again.
Figure lis a sectional elevation of the press taken on the line a' of Fig. 2, and Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation taken on the line y y, Fi 1.
represents the frame of the press; B, the box; and G, the follower. The follower is mounted on the upper ends of two arms or string-bars, D, which are jointed to the underside of it, asat E, and they have a roller, F,
in the other ends resting in a track or way in the bed-piece G. H is a shaft or drum arranged horizontally across the way Gr above it at the middle to wind up the rope L for forcing the press-follower up. Said drum is provided with a wheel, K, and rope L for turning it by horse-power to wind up the rope L. This rope L is attached to the drum and extends therefrom each way over the pulleys M on the arms D near the lower ends 5 also, over guide -pulleys N, and to the follower where the rope-ends are attached, as at P, also, that by forcing the arms D toward cach other by the rope and the drum, the ends connected to the follower are forced upward, and thereby caused to force the follower up. The weight of the follower will cause it to force the arms back when the rope is unwound from the drum or let free, so it can be as soon as the arms are started a little beyond the vertical positions, which may be done by hand or` in any approved way.
The arrangement is applicable for hoistingelevators and other objects as well as the followers of presses.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- -The combination, with the press-box and follower O provided with pulleys N, of the cords or ropes I, windlass H K, arms D, pnlleys M O, rollers F F, and the track or way S,
all constructed and arranged as shown and described.
JAMES P. PRIDGEON.
