IMPROVEMENT IN BLACKlNG-BOX COVERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,102, dated April 22, 1873; application filed April 4, 1873.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J. B. SEALER, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in (lovers for BlaokingBoxes, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of my invention relates to an improvementin covers for blackingboxes 5 and consists in placing a sponge or other absorbing material in the cover for holding water, over which is placed a perforated plate, held in position by any suitable devices, and through which the water oozes, when pressed upon by the brush, in sufiicient quantity to supply all the moisture needed.
Figure one is a cross-section of my cover. Fig. 2 is an inverted view of the same, showing the perforated plate.

When the sponge is full of water, upon pressing down upon the plate with the brush,
the water oozes through the small perforations I in sufficient quantities to supply all the moisture needed for applying the blacking to the boots or shoes. The moisture also serves, while the cover is on the box, to keep the blacking moist, and to prevent it from drying up.
This device adds not only to the convenience of the person using it, but makes the operation of blacking ones boots or shoes much more cleanly and pleasant.
Instead of the perforated plate, wire-gauze maybe used if so desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The blacking-box cover a containing the sponge, or its equivalent, in combination with the perforated plate 0 held in place by lugs e, substantially as shown and described.
