HEEL FOB. SHOES.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN R. MnNCA- RELLT, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at the city of Grand Rapids, county of Kent, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Heels for Shoes, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to improvements in heels for shoes.
The main objects of this invention are to provide an improved-shoe heel of the turned wooden high or French type which is quickly and easily attached, is very secure and very strong and durable.
A further object is to provide an improved heel having these advantages in which a renewable facing or wear lift is provided.
Further objects and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
l accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure I is adetail side elevation of a shoe embodying the features of my invention with the heel and a portion of the counter shown in vertical section.
Il is a perspective view of the reinforcing and attaching dowel.
In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts in both views.
Referring to the drawing, 1 represents a shoe generally` 2 the sole, 3 the counter thereof. The heel l which is of the turned wood high or French type, is provided with a noncircular hole 5 extending from top to bottom thereof. Fitting this hole is the non-circular dowel 6, having a head 7 countersunk in the heel at its lower end. The dowel has a longitudinal threaded bore 8 at its lower and upper ends, the upper bore being adapted to receive the attaching screw 9. On the lower end of the heel is a facing or wear lift 10 of leather or other suitable material, this Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October l1, 1920.
Patented May 1'7, 1921.

lift being screwed by the screw 11 threaded into the lower end of the dowel.
lt is a matter of common experience for heels of this type to split when the nails or screws are driven into them by 4the manufacturers or in repairing shoes by the addition of new heels. lt is further a very common experience for heels to break, not only greatly inconveniencing the wearer, but the breakage is frequently a source of danger. My improved heels may not only be applied without danger of cracking or splitting the same, but are very strong and not likely to be broken in use. Further the facing or wear lifts may be quickly renewed as occasion requires.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. The combination with a shoe sole, 0f a turned wooden heel of the high or French type, having a non-circular hole extending from top to bottom thereof, a metal dowel of non-circular cross section fitting said hole, and provided with a countersunk head at its lower end. said dowel having threaded longitudinal bores in its ends, an attaching screw threaded into the upper end of said dowel, a facing lift for the bottom of said heel, and an attaching screw for said lift threaded into the lower end of said dowel whereby said lift is removably secured to the heel.
2. The combination of a wooden heel, a metal dowel of non-circular cross section extending from top to bottom of the heel and provided with a countersunk head at its lower end. said dowel having a threaded longitudinal bore at its upper end adapted to receive an attaching screw, a wear lift for the bottom of said heel, and an attaching screw for said lift threaded into the lower end of said dowel.
In witness whereof l have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two witnesses.
