L. E. CUMMINS.'
PLIERS.
APPLICATION FILED MAYZG, 1919.

LE Cum/mks LOUIE E. CUMMINS, OF WALTHILL, NEBRASKA.
ILIERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 17, 1920.
Application filed May 26, 1919. Serial No. 299,700.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIE E. citizen of the United States, residing at Walthill, in the county of Thurston and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pliers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in pliers and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character of a compound type. r
It is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby the same may be employed with convenience and facility in the application or removal of cotterpins or the like.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this general character which is especially designed for use in connection with repairs on automobiles and wherein the device is capable of a multiplicity of uses.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved pliers whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive, and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a View in elevation of pliers constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a view in end elevation of the pliers as herein embodied with the jaws in closed position, and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view in perspective of the outer end portion of one of the operating handles herein included.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 and 2 denote jaws pivotally connected one with the other through the medium of the pin or bolt 3, and said jaws are provided respectively with the operating handles 5 and 4.
The outer extremity of the handle 4.- is
CUMMiNs, a
beveled, as at 6, whereby the same may be used as a screw-driver or the like. The outer free extremity of the operating handle 5 is curved outwardly in a direction away from the handle 4:, and said curved portion 7 is tapered so that the same may be inserted through the eye of a cotter-pin to facilitate the withdrawal of such pin and during which operation the handle 5 is employed as a lever. The curved portion 7 also provides means whereb Y the slipping of the hand during a working operation is prevented.
The pin or bolt 3 is directed through a transversely disposed slot 8 produced in the jaw 2 there being two or more of these slots 8 so that said jaws l and 9. may be adjusted one relatively to the other as the requirements of practice may necessitate.
The opposed or working faces of the jaws 1 and 2 at a point in advance of their pivotal connection are provided with coacting shoulders 9 which serve as cutting members, whereby wire or the like may be readily severed.
The intermediate or central portion of the opposed or working faces of the jaws l and 2 are provided with the serrations or teeth 10, so that the tool may be conveniently and effectively engaged with a nut or the like to permit the use of the tool as a wrench.
The outer end portion of the working face of the jaw l is provided with a longitudinally disposed groove 11 substantially V- shaped in cross-section and extending sub stantially the width of the jaw. and the opposed end portion of the working face of the second jaw 2 is provided with a correspondingly formed extension 12 adapted to seat within the groove 11 and also substantially extending across the width of the jaw 2; and which portions are adapted to be used in the spreading of a cotter-pin after the same has been inserted through the work. In the event the cotter-pin requires straightening before being applied to the work, this result can be obtained by placing the pin transversely across the groove 11 and the extension 12 caused to engage therewith.
A cotter-pin may also be readily held by my improved tool to facilitate its insertion through the work, and it is also to be noted that the free extremities of the opposed or working faces of the jaws offer no obstruction to the use of the device for other purposes, which is facilitated by the fact that the opposed or Working faces of the jaws l and 2 substantially contact when the extension 12 is seated within the groove 11.
It is also to be observed that the handles 4 and 5 are so disposed longitudinally as to tion Without departing from the principles and spirit thereof, and for this reason I donot' Wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and forma tion of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
A tool of the class described, comprising a pair of pivoted jaws provided with handles for operating the same, the outer extremity of one of the jaws having its working face provided with a groove, said groove being of awidth substantially the same as the width of the jaw, the outer extremity of the second; jaw having its working face provided with an extension adapted to seat within the groove of the first jaw, said extension being of a width substantially the same as the width of the second jaw, said groove and extension being each substantially V shape in cross section, the opposed faces of the jaws immediately adjacent the groove and extension substantially contacting when the extension is seated within the groove.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
