Description
UNITED STATES "PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE CROUCH, OF WESTPORT, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUCKLE-CHAPES AND STRAP-LOOPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,714, dated July 9, 1872; antedated June 23, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE CROUCH, of Westport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented and made a Metallic Buckle-Chape and Strap-Loop; and the following is declared to be a correct description thereof:
Buckles have been secured to trunks by chapes or fastenings; these have usually been made of leather with a leather loop sewed to the chape. In use, these loops are very liable to be pulled off, and they are also difficult to construct in a neat manner, and hence costly.
My invention consists in a metallic chape and strap-loop combined, which is made in such a manner as to secure the buckle very firmly to the trunk or valise, and also furnish a neat and handsome loop for the strap, and one that is not liable to be pulled off in use.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is an elevation of the chape, loop, and buckle; andFig. 2 is a section of the same.
The metal chape and loop are cast in one piece, the portion a being recessed at the back to receive the cross-bar of the buckle b, and having an opening through which the tongue 0 is inserted. The rivets, nails, or screws through the holes 2 2 2 serve to hold this portion of the chape firmly in place. The loop e is made hollow and open at the back, so as to be molded easily and cast, the side pieces 3 making a firm connection to the other parts of the casting, and the rivets or screws through the flange f secure this part of the loop-frame firmly in place. By extending the chape up behind the buckle, as at h, a recess is formed for the reception of one end of the leather or other strap, the same being held firmly by the screws, nails, or rivets at 3 3.
The entire casting can be molded and cast with facility, and the buckle applied thereto previous to attaching the chape to the trunk or valise.
I do not claim a metallic chape for a buckle, nor a strap-loop.
I claim as my invention- The metallic chape a and strap-loop 0 cast in one piece, and having a recess for the crossbar of p the buckle and an opening for the tongue, as set forth, in combination with the buckle b c, as specified.
Signed by me this 13th day of November, A. D. 1871.
GEO. CROUCH.
Witnesses GEO. '1. PINCKNEY, CHAS. H. SMITH.
