VERTICAL FILE Appucafion mea December e, 191e'. serial No. 135,436.
To llwhom t may concern.'
Bc itclgnown that I, CHESTER HUEEATLE hlvnns, of the city of Toronto, in the county of York, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vertical Files, of which y the following is the specification.
My invention relates to improvements in vertical files and the object of the invention is to provide means which may be readily insertible in a4 file drawerA without the employment of skilled labor, for supporting in-A dependently movable file pockets whereby the upper edges of the pockets are held parallel and in horizontal alinement so that the printed headings of each pocket will all be equally visible as the pockets are turned over by the fingers thus eliminating the danger of overlooking any one file pocket falling below the level. of ilhe others thereby sav ing time in picking out the required pocket and the reinsertion thereof at the saine time reducing the number, of guide cards usually employed and it consists essentially of the following arrangement and construction of parts as hereinafter more particularly explained by the following specification.
4Figure l, is a general perspective view of my device inserted in a tile drawer showing the file drawer in Section.
Fig. 2, is 'a perspective detail of the lile pocket support.
' Fig. 3, is a cross section through Fig. 1.
Fig. 4v` is a perspective detail of one of the file pockets.'
In the drawings like letters of reference indicate corresponding parte in each figure. 1 indicates a iile drawer of any suitable construction. 2 indicates the file pocket supporting frame comprising the vertical members 3, 4, 5 and 6 which are located in each.
corner of the drawer 1 when in position, the longitudinal members 7 and 8 and cross members 9 and 10 connecting thevertical members 3, 4, 5 and 6 together. The vertical members 3, 4, 5 and 6 are preferably formed of angle iron. 11 and 12 indicate guide bars extending longitudinally of the le drawer and connected at their ends to the upper ends of the verticale 3,' 5. and 4, 6. When the frame is inserted in the drawer the guide barsl and 12 are located at each side of thedrawer above the side edges thereof.

and 15, The width of the pockets 13 is substantially the same as the distance be tween theifuide bars 11 and 12 so that when they are in position the laterally extending portions 14 and 15 project over such guide bars. The' projections 14 and 15 are preterably made with a notch 16 which engages with the guide bars 11 and 12 and prevents any tendency for'the pocket to move from a position at right angles to the side bars toward an inclined horizontal. position The pockets 13 may be made of such a length that when they are in the normal or closed position they han g vertically from the bars 11 and 12 and are clear from the botu torn of the bottoni of theA drawer 1. ln this way the pocket is normally suspended from the side bars 11 and 12; I, however.,a pretw erably make the pockets 13 of such a length that they bear slightly upon the bottom of the l,drawer asindicated in the drawing, such pocket-s assuming a normally slightly inclined position. By this means the weight of the contents of a iile/awill .not be normally carried by the lateral projections 14 and 15 'upon the guidebars 11 and 12 which would have a tendency to wear the lower edges of the lateral projections by the continued opening and closing of the tile pockets prodncing a rubbing action between. the lower edgesoitlie lateral projections and the side from the rest.
It has been found that in all vertical filing systems the pocketsV supported Within the iile have a tendency to sink when heavily loaded so that the upper edge of a heavily loaded file assumes a position below the upper edge of the rest of the files andQthat,
therefore, when the iiles are being quickly' turned over by the lingers it is very easy` to miss this le. y
By my construction all the files are held in a definite position and cannot be carried out of such position no` matter how,l heavy .the contents of the file is. 'By formingsthe A- lateral projectitns lfand 15 with theiiotches v16 so as to engage wijtinthe side bars 11 and -12 all-neraksfeaesld i 'e Meer allel position and cannot move nul, of such position. At the same time all the pockets being independently suppurled they can be. independently moved from the e and rearranged as desrad (n: any une individual 'fila Hwy be withdrawn dnd as easily replacsd by reason. of the pockets, remaining in the El@ being held separated apart at 4the place of the Withdrawn file pocket and urhm l have devised such a device may be mlsil y insertible 11 any ordinary. 'ie drawer Whmit. altering the constructmn and, without; dm employment 0i skilled abor.
thmlgh I have described ,my constmtion as applid to le pockets it will of course.l be lulderstnud that it. may be, :uhlpunl muuuy WGH t0 guido Garde :md anni indfx.
