To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY M. GALLm, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bag-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to bags and has particular application to improved means for fastening the mouth in closed position to prevent the accidental removal of the contents thereof.

The chief characteristic of this invention resides in the provision of a device of the above described character which is in the form of a strip that is secured to the bag or may be formed by slitting the bag and stitching the walls of the slit, the strip being adapted to be twisted about the mouth of the bag to securely retain the same in closed position.

Other characteristics of this invention are to provide a device of this character which eliminates the use of cords or wires and to provide a tying strip which is adapted to be properly carried by the bag whereby the same may be readily accessible in fastening the bag in closed position.

A further characteristic resides in the provision of a device of the above described character which contains the desirable features of simplicity, durability and efficiency, and furthermore a device which may be manufactured at a nominal cost.

Other objects of the invention will appear as the specification is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the bag and tying strip showing the bag in open position.

Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the tying strip in applied position showing the mouth of the bag closed.

Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, illustrating the second step in the use of the closure strip; and

Fig. i is a detail view similar to Fig. 3 illustrating the final step in the use of the tying strip.

Referring to the drawings in detail, my invention comprises a flexible bag which is generally indicated as at A, the same being formed of any suitable material such as cloth, leather or the like. The tying strip Which is indicated as at B bag to is shown in this instance by slitting the bag 1, the slit being arranged to extend through the opposite sides of the bag adjacent one vertical edge thereof and arranged longitudinally of the same. The upper end of the slit 1 is adapted to terminate at a point adjacent the upper edge of the mouth of the bag, the inner wall of the slit being stitched longitudinally as at 2 whereby the accidental removal of the contents will be prevented. The outer wall of the slit and the inner wall of the strip B is also stitched longitudinally as at 3 whereby the strip will be re inforced and the breaking of the same prevented.

It will be manifest from the foregoing construction that in practice the mouth of the bag is adapted to be folded longitudinally upon itself from the opposite side edge of the bag opposite to that of the strip toward the strip whereby the folded portion is passed through the slit 1. The strip B is now twisted to form a loop by inserting the fingers within the slit and twisting the strip downwardly whereupon the loop is passed over the folded end of the bag whereby the bag will be securely fastened in closed position.

It will be evident that the contents of the bag will exert a certain amount of tension upon the walls of the mouth as to cause the folded portion of the bag to expand within the loop whereby the loop will be caused to engage the folded mouth of the prevent the accidental opening of the same.

It will thus be seen that I have provided simple and etficient means which is permanently carried by the bag for securely fastening the mouth of the bag in closed position and that the tying strip is so secured to the bag as to eliminate any tying or knotting operation. Y

Although I have specifically stated and shown that the tying strip is formed by splitting the bag, I wish it to be clearly understood that the tying strip may be formed independently of the bag and secured by its ends to the bag in proper position to accomplish the purpose for which it is intended.
