Description

(16.) C.. B. BROADWELL.
` .improvement in Washing Machines.'
N0. 122,434. Patentedjan.2,1872.
Unrrnn amarres @arenal 'rrren CHARLES B. BROADWELL, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA, ASSIGNOR OF v(')NE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO PAUL COOK, OF SAME PLAGE.
o IMPRQVEMENT In WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of VLetters Patent No. 122,434, dated January 2, 1872.
Be it known that I, CHARLES B. BROAD- WELL, of the city of New Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented a new, useful', and Improved WTashing-Machine 'and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of my invention, when taken in connection with the drawing hereto annexed, whereon is amply illustrated all that'l claim as pertaining thereto.
My improvement is of simple and economical construction, of very easy operation, and accomplishes in a very effectual manner the Objects soughtto be attained by it. i
My invention consists of a semicircular box,
' A, conveniently placed upon the legs B, which are of height-convenient for working. rlhese legs may, if desired, be provided at their lower extremities with casters, and the box may also be provided with handles upon its sides, so that the machine may be moved from one place to another, like a wheelbarrow, with the greatest ease and facility, and when not in use the handles may drop to a vertical position and be out of the way. Beneath the said box A the treadle O for the operation of my deviceV is placed. This operation is, moreover, further assisted by means of the spiral spring D, to the upper end of which is secured the cord a, Which is made to pass under the pulley b, and finally to connect the oscillatin g frame E, to the lower arms of which is supposed the revolvin g washer or rubber' wheel F. rlhe frame E aforesaid is pivoted vupon the cross-bar G, which latter is supported by the upright standards b. These standards also support the double crankshaft H, which is made to pass through the slot c made Within the frame E.
jlhe cranks d and e are unequal to the end of securing a long or short stroke to the frame E, as may be conve-nient or desirable. The rubber roller F is perforated with a series of holes, h, into which the pin t' may, at the pleasure of the operator, be inserted through the frame E', whereby the said rubber F may be rigidly iixed and its revolutions preventeda contingency exceedingly ldesirable where a more direct and forcible impingement against the clothing under treatment may be required.
The fra-me E is furthermore provided at l with a spring, 7c, which allows of a free vertical adjustability of the rubber roller F, whereby it is enabled to accommodate itselfto obstruc tions, such as heavy seams or buttons upon the clothing to be washed. Upon the extreme ends of the crank-shaft H are placed the ily-wheels K K', which, when in motion, materially assist the treadle by which the rubber frame is operated. The treadle, it will be perceived, is connected to the rubber frame by the cord e in passing over the pulley a npon the upright standard O. The foot applied to the treadle will impart a forward movement to the rubber frame E, while the spiral spring D aforesaid Will, by reason of the tension thereupon exerted by the forward movement ofthe said rubber frame, effectthe backward movement th ereof, and when once in motion will operate with the greatest ease and facility. The bottom of the box A is provided with a series of rollers, p, as is usual with many machines of this class. [t is `furthermore provided with the stopper Z for the purpose of withdrawing the dirty water or suds from the box when desired'.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
l. The frame E, rubber F having a series of perforations l1, h, and pinV i, when the same are combined and arranged so as to operate substantially as described. Y
2. The'crank H, frame E, springs I) K, rollers F P, treadle (l, and cord c, when the same are combined and arranged so as to operate substantially as described.
Witnesses: p C. B. BROADWELL.
