PAUL R. HETTINGER AND CARL P. PRINCE, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK? 'ronacoo-oan nonnnn.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 3(1), 191i Y.
- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, PAUL R. Hn'rrrnonn and CARL P. PRINCE, citizens of the Unlted States, residing at Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have in vented new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Gan Holders, of which the following is a-specification.
The present invention relates to holding devices primarily adapted for sustaining cans of tobacco to suspend the same from the belt of the owner.
In carrying out our inventlon 1t 1s our purpose to provide a simple, cheap and thoroughly effective clamp whereby cans of tobacco or the like may be effectively held to permit of the removal of the same when desired and to also provide the holder with a clip whereby the same may be suspended from the belt dver the hip pocket of the trousers of the owner, so that the can cannot inflict injury to the pocket or to anycombination and arrangement of parts set .forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the application of the improvement, Fig. 2 is a central vertical longitudinal sectional view through the same, and
Fig. 3 isa perspective view of the clamp or i holder.
In the general constructionof tobacco cans the bottom of the same is provided with a continuous bead 1 and the open top is normally closed by a hinged closure '2.-
Our improved holder is broadly indicated by the numeral 3 and is preferably constructedof some cheap but substantial metal.
The holder includes a body portion 4 which is widened at, what I will term, its lower end as indicated by the numeral 5, and the said widened portion is'bent'upon itself to provide the same with a flange 6 that is arranged parallel with the body, forming a channel 7 between the said flange and body which is adaptedto receive the bead 1 of the can. The central and reduced portion of the body, indicated by the numeral 8, is in the nature of a strap and is provided for the major portion of its length with longitudinally extending slot 9. Arranged upon what may be termed the front face of the strap or the portion thereof provided with the lip 6 and the channel 7 is the leg 10 of an ang'ular spring clamp 11. The horizontal portion of the clip preferably has its end curved downwardly in the direction of the lip ,6,
and this member, indicated for distinction by the numeral 12 of the clamp 11, is adapted to frictionally engage with the top of the can and to force the same downwardly to be engaged in the channel 7 and by the lip 6.
The leg 10 is provided with one or more threaded aperatures 13 which receive the threads of the shank portions of headed members 14 that pass through the slot 9 of the central portion 8' of the body and enter sulitable threaded openings in the leg or body 15 of a spring clip 16. The threaded members or screws 14 bind the members 10 and 15 against the opposite faces of the central portion 8 of the body member 4 and the slot 9 permits of the adjustment of the said members. The tongue 17 of the clip 16 has its end curved outwardly from the body of the clip, as indicated by the numeral 18, whereby the said clip may be readily inserted over the trouser belt on the clothes of the wearer.
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the simplicity of the device, as well as the advantages thereof will, it is thought, be perfectly apparent to those skilled in the art to which such inyention'appertains with out further detailed descriptions Having thus described the invention, what 7 we claim is .slotted strap having its end widened and formed with a tongue providing a channel l a. e a.
between the tongue and the said widened end of the strap, a right angular spring clamp upon one of the sides of the strap, of a spring clip upon the other side of the strap,
adjustable securing members for the clamp and clip and passing through the slot of the strap, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures 1n presence of two wltnesses.
