COMBINED HOOD AND SCAR/F.
Specification of Letters Eatent.
Patented Nov. "X, 1916.
Application filed January 5, 1915. Serial No. 612.
To all whom it may conbern:
Be it known that we, SAMUEL W. HALLAM and AMBROSE T. HoULoswoRrH, a citizen of the United States and a subject of the King of England, respectively, and residents of New York, borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, and of New York, borough of Manhattan, county and State of New York, respectively, have invented a certain new and useful Improve ment in Combined Hoods and Scarfs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to a class of wearing apparel for persons.
Our invention has for its object primarily to provide a combined hood and scarf designed to be worn by a person for protecting the head and neck during cold and inclement weather, and wherein is provided a hood member of a partially-spherical shape so as to be disposed over the back and top of the head of the wearer. Extending from spaced parts of the edge of the hood member are two scarf members which are of lengths and widths adapted to be overlapped a number of times around the persons neck, and the scarf members together with the hood are integrally formed of woven or knitted yarn or other similar material to permit the hood to closely fit the head when applied thereon.
Another object of the invention is to provide in overlapping arrangement on top of the front edge of the hood member a vizor adapted to be disposed downwardly over the face of the wearer; and still another object of the invention is to provide on the edge of the back of the hood member a flap adapted to rest on the neck of the wearer for protection during inclement weather.
A further object of the invention is to provide a combined hood and scarf of simple and eflicient construction, and which is susceptible of being worn by children as well as adults.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, the said invention being more fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims at the end of the description.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a view of one form of combined hood and scarfembodying our invention, showing the manner of its use when worn. by a person. Fig. 2 is a front v1ew of the article. Flg. 3 is a view of somewhat a diderent form of the hood and scarf when applied to a person, and Fig.
4c is a front view of the form of the article shown in Fig. 3.
Thecombined hood and scarf has a hood member 10 which is preferably partiallyspherical in shape so as to be removably disposed over the back and top of the head of a person, although this hood may be made of any other desired shape as occasion requires.
Extending from spaced parts of the edge of the hood member are two scarf members 11 and 12, or these scarf members may be integrally formed on the rear edge of the hood member so as to extend from spaced parts thereof, as shown. Both of the scarf members 11 and 12 are of suflicient lengths to permit of being thrown a number of times around the neck in overlapping arrangement when worn, and these scarf members are made of widths so as to thoroughly cover the persons throat.
The hood member and the scarf members are integrally formed of woven or knitted yarn. or other similar elastic thread material in open mesh or close weave for being sufficiently elastic to permit the hood to be made in comparatively small sizes and then stretched when applied on the head of the wearer in order to fit closely, and the front edge of the hood member may be knitted to form somewhat a contracted yielding welt 13 so as to closely engage the head of the wearer.
To use the hood and scarf the hood member 10 is directed over the back part of the head of the wearer so that the back edge thereof will lie against the upper part of the back of the neck and the welt 13 will encircle the face of the wearer. For the purpose of fastening the front edge of the hood member under the chin of the person, a fastening device 15 is provided. While this fastening device may be of any suitable type, we prefer to employ the well known form which consists of a socketed member 16 and a complemental member 17 having a projecting button or knob adapted to be removably inserted into the socket of the member 15. The member 16 of the fastening device is held on one end of the front edge, or welt 13 of the hood member at the juncture thereof with the scarf member 11, and the member 17 is-held on'the opposite end of the welt at its juncture with the scarf member 12.
In order to further protect the face and the back of the neck of the wearer during severe weather, forms of the article may be made having a vizor, as 18, on the front edge of the hood member, and having a flap, as 19, on the back edge thereof. The vizor 18 andthe flap 19 may be integrally knitted to the hood member so that the back flap will extend downwardly over the back of the neck of the wearer, while the vizor will normally lie on the top of'the hood member transversely at its edge whereby the vizor may be directed to partially cover the face of the wearer, as shown at 20 Fig. 3, the scarf members being wrapped over the back flap when disposed around the neck, as above described.
In the foregoing description, we have embodied the preferred form of our invention, but we do not wish to be understood as limiting ourselves thereto, as we are aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the principle, or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, therefore we reserve to ourselves the ri ht. to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a head covering,- a hood member adapted to be applied to the head of a person to cover the back and top thereof, and a U-shaped scarf member secured at its central portion to the rear lower edge of said hood member, the ends of said scarf member being free and adapted to be passed around the neck of the wearer in overlapping engagement; said hood member being provided at its front edge with a vizor lying normally flat upon the top thereof and adapted to be turned downwardly to \partially cover the face of the wearer and bonforming to the shape thereof, together with an independent flap attached to the rear portion of the scarf member and depending loosely therefrom to protect the back of the neck of the wearer.
2. In a head covering, a hood member adapted to be applied to the head of a person to cover the back and top thereof, a U-shaped scarf member secured at its central portion to the rear lower edge of the hood member, the ends of said scarf being free and adapted to be passed around the neck of the wearer in overlapping engagement, and a welt attached to the front edge of said hood member and adapted to have its ends meet under the chin of the wearer, together with means for detachably attach in% said ends substantially as described.
